Key Charger Injuries

24 posts in this topic

I read on Foxsports.com that their Pro Bowl center Nick Hardwick and guard Louis Vasquez went down last night. I've been all over NFL websites and this is the first I've seen this mentioned. I didn't watch the game either. Anyone have details on this.

If they miss the game next week, that would be huge for us. Especially them losing Hardwick.

I remember seeing Hardwick carted off the field, which does not bode well for his immediate future, but wasn't Vasquez just limping off by himself?

Yeah, this is probably the best time for us to see this team. They are banged up. And Merriman is even complaining that he isn't 100% yet either.

To add, it's great that the Chargers won last night's game as going into San Diego for their home opener, with a loss being devastating for the Chargers would have been especially tough on Baltimore.

I agree. I'm still a bit nervous about the cross country trip though. History is not kind for those teams.

Hardwick later came back to the field on crutches and a boot on his leg. So this sounds serious, and could be a huge loss for San Diego.

"Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson (ankle), C Nick Hardwick (knee), G Louis Vasquez (leg), and NT Jamal Williams (undisclosed) are all expected to be game-time decisions on Sunday.
Coach Norv Turner doesn't expect any of the injured players to practice on Wednesday, so we won't have a good idea on their status until Thursday at the earliest. Tomlinson rolled his ankle in the first quarter Monday night, and he's already looking to lose work to Darren Sproles even if he does play. He could also be without two starting offensive linemen."

Bah! I want to play and beat these teams (the better ones) when they are 100%

A win a is a win, we had 19 guys on IR last year and we still came out pretty good. It's all in how deep a team is! I could care less if 10 starters are out for the opposing team, it's football...you can only play the schedule the NFL gives u.

DISAGREE. Win or Lose they are going to play with the same tenacity. Just like how we won, we still need to work on things just like they do with their win. This isnt High School or College, they are Pros they always play at their highest potential because contracts and $$$ depend on it.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Didn't you catch a Lions game last year(or Sunday for that matter)? haha

I agree with ravensfan160 and Ravnet. Teams often times fall into a sense of complacency or have a sense of urgency. If San Diego loses their first game. A sense of urgency might be enforce. I agree with your point that the Chargers are going to come out and play the best they can (they are professional athletes) but its the mindset during the game.

BTW, our guys must be foaming at the mouth since the Chargers might be out their best offensive lineman. Hell I'm foaming at the mouth. Any article that talks about the game, talks about the Chargers possibly missing Hardwick & Vasquez.

Sans their all-pro center and a starting guard, I don't see Gregg and Ngata collasping the interior line. Darren Sproles is shifty, but I think he's waaaaay overrated. Shut down the run and put the game in the hands of Phillip Rivers (also waaaaay overrated). After seeing how Oakland ran up and down on the Charger's D, I'm feeling more confident than I did a few days ago (Michael Bush and Darren McFadden had a combined 5.2 YPC I think.)

We'll see how that works out for us. KC has one of the worst OL's in the league, our DL should have dominated them and made them look like backups but we didnt.

I don't think you wont to under estimate the talents of P. River and D. Sproles.

River is an excellent QB. He could easily win this game passing the ball 50 plus times.

Very true. You never know what to expect. Though our D-Line didn't have a horrific game on Sunday. 3 sacks, 1 FF. consistent pressure.

But nevertheless if the Chargers are without Vasquez and Hardwick, in theory it should prove to be to our advantage. How much? That's yet to be seen.

I'm gonna have to wholeheartedly disagree with this. Yes, Rivers is an above average QB, but he is no way an "elite" QB. No QB out of that draft class is "elite" yet, I would only give 3 QBs the "elite" title, Manning, Brady, and Brees.

I normally want to face every team with their absolute best playing, but that's never realistic given the frequency of injuries.

With that said, I'd be lying if I wasn't happy to hear some of their best guys might be out this week. The Chargers are a tough team, and even though the Raiders gave them a run for their money, that was a trap game in the making to begin with. Week 1 is probably not indicative of what this San Diego squad is fully capable of.

Teams always seem to try and play their best against the Ravens because of their defense, particularly at the quarterback position. It seems like more and more QBs just throw quick passes to avoid pressure & expose the weaknesses in the secondary. However, unlike years past, the Ravens have an offense now that can put up points quick, and even though the opposition might score a few times, this veteran defense won't allow them to march up and down the field on them! So I think the game could be close through the first half, but then in the second half we pull away from them because of better conditioning and less key injuries ;)

They both went down pretty hard, I believe Vasquez was carted off the field. Either way, Its their passing game which I am more concerned about.

I'm not going to call Rivers elite yet either but the country boy does have 10 4th quarter comebacks under his belt now. He has shown nothing but toughness under pressure (AFC Championship game with ACL removed earlier in the week) and is breaking Fout's records in SD. I'm still not sold on Brees' ability to respond to pressure.

McNeill, their LT, also has an ankle injury, which he had to play on against the Raiders because they are so thin along the O-Line... If it is still bothering him on Sunday, Suggs, et al. should wreak even more havoc.
