Will Joe Throw 43 Times Again At Sd?

50 posts in this topic

I think that Cam wanted Joe to get his feet wet against a poor KC defense. The Ravens (according to the experts) moved away from the run. I do not forsee this as permanent, but rather an attempt to get JOe more comfortable passing in his 2nd year. Next week I see A LOT more carries for Rice and co. Thoughts?

Of course this is contingent upon how the game is going. If (god forbid) the Chargers jump ahed by 21 points, then obviously the passing game is going to have to be relied upon.

With the success that the Oakland running backs had against the San Diego defense, I'm sure we will see more running plays.

Although, I still feel that Joe is going to throw the ball a lot as well. Maybe not 40+ pass attempts but he could go 30 to 35. It depends on what San Diego gives us.

Cam Cameron wants Joe Flacco to become and "elite" QB in this league. Joe is doing everything right so there is no need to start going too conservative with him at this point.

I'm guessing Cam takes what he's given, and then takes a little more because he wants it. Last week's attack was fairly balanced - 300+ through the air, approx. 200 on the ground. I see balance in the game plan again, with some special twists for San Diego. The offensive options are more numerous now than a year ago, and depending on opponent, might be more numerous as time goes by.

As Cam Cameron alluded to in a preseason interview, it all depends on the situation. If he feels as if the defense is giving up more plays through the air than usual, he'll stick to the aerial attack. If he feels as if the front seven is giving up too much up the gut, he'll stick to the run. Either way, I think he'll have Flacco start the game throwing more than last season because few defenses will respect Flacco's arm; they know he can throw the deep ball, but they don't know about his accuracy, period.

If you'll notice, the first 10 passes or so were out of the play action against KC, and Cam kept going back to the play action because KC kept biting on it with 8 men in the box. For them to continually stack the box like that despite being beaten with pass after pass definitely constituted an unusual situation, in my book.

I doubt we will throw more then run against SD. But it really comes down to who were playing, and if we need to pass. Coaches look at tape and the numbers. They will take a look at the game SD played and watch for there biggest weakness and build a gameplan around it.

But I have a big feeling its going more run first against them. Afterall running the clock keeps the ball out of Rivers hands. And we all know how good he is when he's at his best.

I think KC knew the reality coming into this game so they did everything imaginable to try and stop our running game. They wanted Joe Flacco to beat them and that is exactly what Flacco did.

That was their only option because had they not stacked the box as much, we probably could have ran for 300+ yards in that game.

The funny thing is that even though they stacked the box as much as they did we still ended up with 200 yards of rushing. It was an incredible thing to watch.

It really was surprising to see them not change their game plan. There was even talk after the game from the KC players that they just didn't expect Baltimore to avoid the run as much as they did, and it seemed like they knew, even talked about it on the sidelines and at the half, and still assumed the run would eventually dominate.

It's funny because teams have never had to "gameplan" for a passing offense when preparing for the Ravens. I guess they will now have to do a little more homework!

I'm not saying that Joe Flacco is going to put up Drew Brees numbers by any means but its very promising when in the last 5 games (including preseason), the only thing that any opposing defense has done to us is stack the box and blitz. So far we're 5-0. Teams are going to have to play a little smarter than that now.

I'm sure our coaches were watching the game last night with San Diego. Oakland was just blasting through the defensive line. The change up running backs really proved effective.

So with all that being said, I can't see the coaches deciding to throw the ball just as much. We are going to pound the ball. Only way I can see Joe throwing 43 times, if we fall behind early fast. But I do not see that happening either.

With the way Oakland's Oline was dominating San Diego's Dline last night, we should have huge success on the ground. Oakland was also picking up a lot of yds on short passes to the HB's, so we have to get ray rice into the passing game as well. Overall, I don't think San Diego looked nearly as impressive as everyone said they were. Is everyone saying that they are going to win the SB because they have Merriman back? Bc, he disappeared last night.

I think the reason the Ravens threw so much and so early against Kansas City is because the Ravens HAVE to show they can pass the ball. They have to make teams later in the year(LIKE PITTSBURGH) actually guard against it. That's because when we play Pittsburgh, all they do is load the line of scrimmage and blitz blitz blitz. We have to be able to pass, and the time to get the passing game in rhthym is now.

Do I think we will pass that much against San Diego? Because they couldn't stop the run vs. Oakland... I have a feeling that is what they will be working on all week. We will probably pass early once again, open up the run, and then just unleash all three backs on them in the 2nd half and destroy their defense that is beat up and coming off a short week.

We'll absolutely throw the ball around 35 or so times against SD. They blitz a ton, so I think we'll see a lot of short, quick passes and screens, probably not as many deep passes.

I think if the Raiders can run against SD, then surely the Ravens can. I think we have the better offensive line, and come to think of it, this will be a good test for the young line since they're up against the likes of Shawne Merriman. The Chargers looked sloppy last night, except for in the two minute drill, so let's hope they continue having problems!

I think the run will set up the pass this week but bubble screens and passing into the middle of the field worked well against an over-rated Chargers defense. I still think Joe throws 35+ times in this game. I'm looking at receiving match ups and I think Clayton can get behind the defense again, Heap is a match up nightmare for their corners, and maybe even Washington with his size and strength. I think our running game can gash their line pretty well and Rice and McGahee both should find some nice gains on screen plays but they can't be as predictable as Oakland in their approach, and of course they won't be.

The same way our big receivers cause match up issues so do theirs all of them are BIG and Fabian is going to need some help bringing them down. We are definitely faster than their receivers they don't have someone who can fly behind the D like Clayton but they can contest for any jump ball so we need to be careful of that.

Not to mention, barring that last quarter, Rivers was running for his life many times. Our D-line should do pretty well.

It all depends on what happens on the field. Thanks to Oakland 2 offensive lineman may miss the game, LT is hurting already. They may be forced to pass heavy and often. Norv Turner didn't add depth @ on the online. Another injury and they were going to subsitute a fullback or te to play on the line.

I saw Gregg & Ngata pound the line of scrimmage and blitz heavy and often. No more playing not to lose.. let's play to win.

With that said back to the subject.. I think the run will be used more to open up the pass than the opposite but it all depends on how SD's defense responds. If there is a weakness then we should exploit it until it is no longer an option.

I think we will run and pass more evenly unless one or the other is working better than the other but I think Joe hopefully will take his long shots better this week in saying that there might be less long shots but ones that will actually connect for good yards. Maybe some screens to ray rice and let him get some good yards. Heapwas a great weapon and would love to keep seeing that combo again. So i guess it's what ever is given to us or whatever we take but a win is a win.Kicking is a concern.

There's nothing to be scared about with their receivers. If you were watching last night's game, Murphy was the only WR who had ANY touches on the ball. He recorded 4 catches for 87 yards and a TD. (57 of those yds and the TD came from 1 catch) Up until the 2nd half I don't think Russel connected with ANY of his WRs.

Also, they do have someone who can fly behind our D, and his name is DHB. You remember, the guy who everyone was so crazy about us drafting. It's just too bad that it appears he can't catch a football. (Hopefully he doesn't prove me wrong.)

Their receivers don't scare me, its their TE Miller who Russel looks at when he gets in trouble. Miller had 6 receptions for 96 yds. Miller is big, physical, runs good routes, and has good hands.

I hate to repeat what everyone else has said, but the Raiders' O-Line was manhandling the front 7 of SD, and our O-Line is muuuuch better than Oakland, so I can see similar success with the run game. Rivers was getting really flustered last night when he was put on his butt, so if and when our D-line puts him on his butt a few time, he'll make mistakes. I feel a lot more comfortable about this game after watching what happened last night.

The way the Raiders were running the football I see no need for Flacco to show up.
I see a good game for Rice and Mcgahee.

Yeah, but if they stack the box on every down you can bet that Flacco will be throwing.

I think that with this coaching staff, anything is possible, as long as we play disciplined, and you know, "play like a raven" Joe COULD throw 43 times, but I think he'll throw more like 20-30 times, depending on how often they put 8 in the box. I expect them to try and run it a lot though, and this could be the week Ray Rice gets his first touchdown. Since they are traveling all the way to the west coast I think taking the crowd out of it early will be important, can't go in there and lay an egg like they did last year against the Giants & Colts.

Thats what im most nervous about (defending the pass). I am much confident in our D when teams choose to run the ball more because I know we take pride in stopping the run. Im just not confident enuff in our pass D to sit back and enjoy the game without bitting my finger nails. However, I hope they show sum improvement one game at a time. That being said, I hope they choose to run more and abuse their priviledge of the elusive Sprolls. Injured or not, LT is the least of my worries.

I hope our objective is to run 1st. That will weaken/soften their D. As a result, Passing will be plentyful!!! I dont see them beating us though. But who knows? Any given sunday proved to be a statement of fact after these last 5games invoving the Pats,Colts,Chargers,Cardinals and Ravens. These teams were highly favored. But, the outcome of each game, (Shocking)!!

In the KC game Brandon Flowers was out. We tried to exploit this mismatch by throwing it his way most of the game. This could have been a large factor in Cam's choice to air it out so much in the game.

An interesting stat:

Week 1:

Brady threw 53 times. NE won.
Flacco threw 43 times. The Ravens won.
Roethlisberger threw 43 times. Pitt won.

David Garrard threw 29 times. Jax lost.
Jason Campbell threw 26 times. Wash lost.
Trent Edwards threw 25 times. Buffalo lost.
Brody Croyle threw 24 times. KC lost.

Six QBs had 300 yards passing. 23 of 32 QBs had 200 yards passing.
Only 7 RBs had more than 80 yards rushing.

Winning QBs threw more than losing QBs during Week 1... so don't fret if the Ravens evolve, from a Run-Run-Pass team into a modern, 2009 offense. Pittsburgh had the #23 rushing attack last year, and they won the SB. They beat Arizona, the #32 rushing team last year.

I agree wit Tighthead. Cam Cameron was kinda letting Joe get the air back under his wings. Will he throw that much Sunday?Doubt it. I think we will see more of the ground game to control the clock and keep Rivers and LT on the sideline.
