Sissy Move

Scott Garceau said the Ravens decision not to play the Steelers in the NFL kickoff game was a sissy move. Do you agree? I think it was the right decision. Make them wait for the pain.

It certainly comes off as sissy. We know better though. The NFL is about parity and the last 3 or 4 prime time games between Baltimore and Pittsburg have been in Pittsburg. To add another, particularly one of this magnitude, would be unfair. It still makes us look bad though.

Did Scott Garceau say it was a sissy move or it was percieved as a sissy move?

I dont think its was a sissy move, but in a way it could have given us an edge if only for the fact that we'd get that game out of the way and be able to focus more on the other games.
Lets face it, everyone on this team looks forward to playing the Steelers and to take a win from them on their field int he first game would give us the ultimate boost for the season. Conversely if we lost, at least it would be out of the way and we wouldnt have to worry about the outcome of a game in week 8 just in case our w-l in the first seven games wasnt so hot.

Seriously we've had the worse luck playing nationally televised night games in Pittsburgh. Smart football decision. This game is about wins, and whatever disadvantage you can avoid, you snag it.

This year we get a nationally televised night game in Baltimore. Now that's a nice break for a change.

Hmmmmm... I dont like Scott, not because he said this I've never liked him, but he usually has a pretty good idea what he's talking about.

People keep saying we opted out of the kick off game and that couldnt be more wrong. They asked for NO primetime games in Pitt. That means none at all, not even a Monday or Sunday night game. The Ravens wouldnt have gotten the kickoff game anyway. Since both teams are projected to be contenders, there is much more drama involved if they play late in the season when the playoffs and division are on the line.

Well Dal and Wash have the Sunday night game that week, so unless either one of those teams are completely out of it, i don't see them flexing us.

I think CBS and FOX can "protect" like two of the games per week they have the rights to. Or in other words they get to pick two games a week where they say "even if NBC wants it they are not getting it." If that is the case there is no way CBS would not protect that game.

Yes it does.

I'll say roughly 65% of Ravens fans wouldn't want any part of the kickoff special this season against Pittsburgh.

I mean, look at the overwhelming odds: first game of the regular season PERIOD, the crowning of the Super Bowl Champs in their stadium, with all eyes watching, and an extremely high risk of injury given the physical nature of these two teams.

The Ravens haven't played well in Pittsburgh in primetime (Week 4 of last season aside, for three quarters), so why be in that position again? That's not being a sissy, that's just playing the odds. Sure, the players themselves don't care who or where they play, but the last defending Super Bowl Champions to lose an opening game was in 1999 when the Denver Broncos (minus the just-retired John Elway) lost to the Miami Dolphins.

Exactly, why would we put ourselves in bad positioning right off the bat?? I'm not saying we couldn't have beaten Pittsburgh tonight, just that the odds would be stacked against us.

Correct.

If we were the team instead of the Titans. We'd get so much whining on here about how this is unfair. That the NFL did it on purpose, crowning the Steelers in front of the Ravens fans. Because they don't give us any respect, they just love the Steelers...blah...blah...blah.

We lost our opener in 2001 against the Bengals coming off of our Super Bowl victory
[/quote]
The defending-champion Ravens defeated the Bears at the start of the 2001 season, not the Bengals. The loss to the Bengals came in Week 2.

I generally don't pay much attention to people who are paid to fill air time to speak and who also compromise their own views to get a rise out of fans.

Making a smart move and playing the odds is sissy in this case, then.

Backing out of a game against your number one rival is backing down against your number one rival, plain and simple.

If that makes us sissies, then OK.

But if it also makes us division champions at the end of the regular season, then none of us will be complaining in hindsight. If it results in the team staying healthy throughout the regular season until the November meeting with the Steelers, then great, being a sissy worked out well, didn't it? ;)

My point is, for all the pride we have in our team, you still have to pick your battles. Sure, we want the Ravens to beat down the defending champions as soon as possible, but is it worth risking the loss of a major cog on the team so early in the season? Every Ravens-Steelers game has resulted in injuries to both teams. Sure, injuries are a part of the game, but not with the frequency and physicality that both teams bring to one another.

I agree with your post in its entirety.

It is advantageous for us to circumvent the Steelers, but I just think that it shows a bias to say that the move isn't cowardly.

I agree, it makes us look like "sissies" turning down the opportunity to play the Steelers on opening day, yet it is a smart move. I would have done the same thing.

I honestly have to go to a game with you, Franchise.

By the way, has no one here ever considered a collective board meet-up?

Virtually every other site has some form of reuniting the fans, and although the admins/PR guys have been awesome in giving out single tickets to individuals, an effort should be considered to bring together hoards boards.baltimoreravens members.

I guess this forum really isn't established enough yet as there are only a handful of regulars, but the idea is worth a mention.

It may be too late for this season, but 2010 sounds ripe for a tailgate + game opportunity.
