Unitas Situation Similarity

6 posts in this topic

Now i'm sure all of you know that Johnny Unitas was drafted by Pittsburgh and released (dumb-asses). Well here is a quick story you may not know that honestly gave me goose bumps when my father told me. My father has been reading the book Unitas for the last week, and told me this story so excuse me if I don't remember names, im 18 and never seen the Colts in Baltimore. Anyway, when Unitas was picked up by Baltimore after he packed his bags from Pittsburgh, he was in much the exact same situation Flacco found himself in in training camp last year when we drafted him. Unitas was not projected to be the Starting QB of the Colts when he first came, infact he was suppost to be a 3rd string bencher, left to sit and observe the game.

While the season started, starting QB George Shaw broke his leg. And the 2nd string Qb had some sort of illness, and could not play. Leaving Johnny Unitas to start.

I thought I would share this story. The similarities are amazing! Thoughts?

That is pretty weird. Both leaving Pittsburgh (city &college) and being the number 3 until an illness. I ll have to pick that book up.

Hmmmm....Not sure about the whole illness thing. From what I know, Shaw had his leg broken during the 4th game of the season against the Bears and Unitas was thrown into that game.

But there are similarities with the whole "Pittsburgh" thing. Although Joe chose to leave Pitt and Johnny U was cut from the Steelers.

Either way, Lets just hope the similarities show on the professional sides of their careers. We already know what Johnny U accomplished. Flacoo has a long way to go! But the future is very bright!

Unitas was a star and to place Joe Flacco in the same realm as him is like wow!!!
Unitas also ended his career in a San Diego uniform!!!
