What Can We Do About Frank Walker..

24 posts in this topic

Well as we all know Frank Walker played like trash all preseason but due to Rolle being out for 6 weeks Im sure they were hesitent to cut Walker. Looking on the depth chart you can see Walker is the nickle back. We play the Patriots week 4 and we all know they like to run 3-4 WR's at times. I cant help but feel my stomach turn thinking about Brady picking on Walker all game. I believe Joey Gallaway is their 3rd WR and while he is old he still runs extremely fast and Im sure he will make Walker look silly. With Reed shawdowing Moss over the top who can pick up the slack for Walkers poor play?

I thought that Carr was the designated nickle? If not, we can only hope that a higher power decides to intervene...

Carr is very low on the deph chart at CB

on the website it is listed like this

LCB=Washington-Walker
RCB=Foxworth-Rolle-Carr

I believe the 5th defensive back is the nickle so if Rolle is hurt that would make Walker next in line right?
Reed
Landry
Washington
Foxworth
Walker<--------------Nickle
Carr<----------------Dime

I don't know if this will happen but hopefully Lardarius Webb can leap-frog Walker and Carr for the nickel job. I haven't seen enough Webb in coverage to assess him but he plays bigger than Walker and is more coachable. And I don't see her as a legitimate source but Anita Marks has said she doesn't see Rolle coming back this year but hopefully he does because he might be the best cover corner on the team.

I think Walker will be ok. The Ravens have to make Brady pay every time he drops back. Brady is way less effective when he's getting hit a lot.

We're going up against the most gifted WR the league has ever seen, and you guys are worried about a 36 year old speed receiver?

If nothing else, I think if Galloway gives Walker too many problems, Fox or Fabe will take over that assignment, and Walker can go to Welker, who is a much better matchup for Walker in the first place (if Walker were a WR, he'd probably be like Welker, without the hands).

Let them run those 3 and 4 receiver sets. I love watching Brady getting sacked.

Between Foxworth and Washington and Reed providing help over the top, I think the team should contain Moss. It's players like Welker and Galloway the team should worry about because they will probably make the drive-extending catches.

we already know we can cover the starters but why would that matter if they keep getting first downs because Walker cant cover his man.

For every 1st down Walker gives up is another 3 downs the D has to be on the field eating up the clock. Gallaway is old but he is still better then those backups who were catching balls over Frank Walker in that Falcons game.

I would personally like if we made a play for Roderick Hood. He was second in the League in Passes Deflected the Season before last, also having significant starting experience. In addition, he was recently with Browns and the Bears, therefore at least somewhat knowledgeable of their tendencies. Seems like a great fit at Nickle. Not pushing it past that. Any thoughts?

I really think the Ravens Offense has more of an advantage over the Patriots defense than the Patriots offense has over our defense. I think the Ravens are gonna run on them all day long, and set up a few big plays from Flacco as their secondary isn't impressive at all

That is true. Walker is an overconfident veteran with experience but other than that, what does he bring to the table? He gives up deep balls, underneath passes, draws penalties and doesn't seem to be a good tackler.

Webb has prime opportunity to be the nickel if he can step up a bit.

Leading the league in passes deflected probably means he's picked on A LOT. The same goes for tackles. With that said though, Hood is probably better in coverage than Walker or Carr but I don't see the team going for him.

I agree with that. The Pats defense has holes. The only really good players on their D I can think of are Wilfork, Mayo and Merriweather. Between Birk and Grubbs, they should be able to shift Wilfork and let the RBs go to work.

I'd be hesitant to dismiss the Patriots defense that quickly. Jarrod Mayo, Adalius Thomas, Vince Wilfork, Merriweather are all very good players. I do think they are going to be weak against the run, Mayo doesn't have that much help, and Wilfork is one of those guys who is out every 3rd play. Their star secondary now either is retired (Rodney Harrison) or plays for the Eagles (Hobbs, Samuel). It will be a good game, look at what the '07 Ravens did against the '07 Pats, if it weren't for a blunder by Rex and some crappy penalties, we would have beat them.

And this will be Merriweathers first year at starter. What its going to come down to is straight up bullying the Pats, thats how you beat them ala NY Giants in both of the games they played. Im not saying their not tough because they are incredibly mentally tough but after playing ahead all the time and being crowned super bowl champs year after year before the season even starts to have someone punch you in the mouth is startling. I like to think in my heart (maybe wishful thinking)that Coughlin and Spagnulo (sp?) were watching intently when we played the Pats in 07 and our play made a light bulb go off. You want to beat the Pats, take chances, go after brady, bully the recievers at the LOS, control the clock, and run the ball right down their throats.

They also have Derrick Burgess, Ty Warren, Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs who are all good veteran players but none are elite.

Btw, Ellis Hobbs was an average corner at best.

That's the one game I'm not actually worried about Frank Walker. Walker always shows up when we play big games (i.e AFC Championship Game) its players that you haven't heard of that he sucks against.

Lets hope so

Well the Pats oline might be a cause for concern this year.

But for right now, lets just deal with KC and worry about the Pats when we get there.

For all anyone knows Walker could be a regular season gamer. Come out and help shut down KC, SD, and Cle's passing game. Come away with a couple of picks, and not allow one TD pass completed, many wouldn't be worried much at that point.

A lot can change with both teams in 4 weeks, lets just see how it plays out.

I am hoping that since the team will actually be gameplanning for opponents now, Walker takes care of what he needs to know in practice as far as our opponents go. Most of the time last year, Walker was a more than capable nickel back / part time starter for us in the season but before that had another crap preseason, much like this year. I am hoping that is the case and I think he will indeed bring his "A" game in the season, which in my opinion should be enough as our 3rd or 4th corner.
