Now because of Flacco and Ryan having excellent rookie seasons, teams expect their rookie quarterbacks to get them to the playoffs. Not going to happen, you need other good players around.

lol @ the David Caruso one-liner reference.

There's a world of difference between last year's rookie phenoms and this year's Sanchez & Stafford. It's one thing to bring in a rookie QB with a great foundation already in place (Atlanta, Baltimore); it's another thing to bring in a rookie QB and expect him to rebuild (NY Jets, Detroit.) So much more pressure, so much more scrutiny, and so little time to adapt. There's almost no room for error for these two, especially Sanchez. And Stafford? Good luck trying to make something out of the Lions in just a year's time.

I guess the Flacco/Ryan example is just another reason why they call this a copycat league.

I don't know, the Jets really aren't that bad. Granted no team has ever been as bad as the '08 Lions, but the Jets records in previous years aren't that different from the Falcons or the Ravens. 10-6, 4-12, 10- 6, 4-12, 9-7... Lol, that sounds familiar doesn't it?

Poor Stafford though, the poor kid is going to get creamed.

the only thing not fair is the fact that 1 win gives stafford best turnaround for a team with a rookie qb ever lol

One game turnaround? Roethlisberger did 9 (10 w/ playoffs), Flacco did 10 (12 with playoffs), Ryan did 11.

Absolutely right. The actual team around the rookie QB is the key to success, at least initially.

Atlanta was 4-12 in '07, and 11-5 with rookie Ryan in '08.
The Ravens were 5-11 in '07, and 11-5 with rookie Flacco in '08.
The NYG were 4-12 in '03, and 11-5 two years later with rookie Eli (6-10 in '04, but he didn't start)
Pitt was 6-10 in '03, and 15-1 with rookie Ben in '04.

These teams had a solid foundation, even with their lesser records the year they drafted their rookie QBs.

The other side of the coin:

Oakland was 2-14 in '06, and 5-11 two years later with rookie J. Russell in '08 - (didn't start in '07).
Buffalo was 6-10 in '03. After drafting J.P. Losman, the Bills are 35-45, with no playoffs. Losman started 33 of 80 games, and has been released.
SF was 2-14 in '04. After drafting Alex Smith, they've gone 23-41, with no playoffs. Smith has started 30 of 64 games.

These teams had no foundation, and their success has been very limited.

So, if I'm predicting... I'll say that Stafford, in Detroit, will have a very rough time, and Sanchez (with less talent, IMO), will probably have a better career - at least initially, with the Jets.

Of course, this is pretty obvious to the casual fan... :D

That's the key, the players around them.

This was the best original post ever.

Also, what have the Lions got to lose? Oh no, if they start a rookie they might not be able to make the playoffs.

Exactly the Lions have little to lose in this situation. They didn't win any games last year, so having the rookie QB start from scratch is probably a good thing.

I know a lot of people think that starting a rookie gives them the deer in the headlight look. The way I see it, if they aren't mentally capable of handling football in the NFL at the rookie level, then they probably will never be. Guys like Ryan Leaf were guys who were going to suck no matter what.

I think this is a good move by Detroit. Although I'm willing to bet Daunte Culpepper is throwing a hissy fit right now. And the coaches will have to put him in time out.

I think they have something to lose.... or did we forget stafford is being paid more than tom brady (argueably the greatest QB of this decade...... i don't like the pats... just making a point)

So by having their high-paid QB play...they're losing? How's that work?

I mean I know how they're LOSING GAMES, but that's gonna happen no matter who's QBing.

This kids dead.I only say that because he has no offense line.

And a bad coaching staff.

And a bad defense.

And a bad....well you get the point.

If he has a good O Line, I don't see why the Lions couldn't win 5-7 games.
