Disney Buys Marvel!?

10 posts in this topic

So rummaging thru ign.com today and i see Disney buys Marvel.Well I thought it was a joke but it's true.
What does this mean for the Marvel universe?I really hope it's like warner brothers and dc comics because wb kept out of dc's business. But Pixar could be taking advantage of this.
Does this mean Marvel going to have to be more kiddie? It took them long enought to find an edge. What does this mean about the movie franchise's am i going to have to see the stupid castle with tinkerbell flying around before Ironman 2?
Don't get me wrong I enjoy alot of Disney movies(being a father of 2 kids it's kinda hard not to),but this scares me.Hopeful it will Wretle the x-men franchise(including wolverine and soon to be deadpool movie) away from Fox because i'm tired of them killing my merry mutants.I don't know just figured I'd share this,in case you haven't figured it out i'm a huge comic book geek!

Well, this could be interesting for business. Obviously, the first thought on people's minds is whether there'll be any crossovers. You likely won't see Mickey Mouse and Spider-Man being buddy-buddy (well, then again...), but there's a strong possibility of the Disney umbrella being used to distribute Marvel film properties. The Disney brand can't be underestimated, even in today's culture where kids are bombarded with other competing brands. Plus, this could give Disney the platform to launch a new film division that focuses soley on bringing Marvel properties to the big screen. Alternately, Disney could also release Marvel films under the DreamWorks or Touchstone Pictures umbrella (both Disney-owned labels.)

As for the comic books themselves, Disney reps have already stated that nothing creatively will be changed. Marvel management will remain in place, and all that will happen is everything from both companies will be merged into one. It's simply a business move more than one made to revamp the creative direction of either company.

All you need to know is, even with the comic book industry (and much of print media, in general) taking a hit in today's cultural climate, there's plenty of money at stake, and both sides stand to profit. There's almost no way this acquisition becomes a loss so long as Disney allows Marvel to do its own thing. Once Disney tries to put their fingerprints on Marvel by seizing creative control, best believe that all of its in-house talent will be up in arms.

Just a side note, but this means that Disney, which has cornered the market on little girls with its "Princess" stuff, is now going after the little boys [not like that!] with the comic book superhero stuff.

Today's Style Section of the Washington Post had a pretty cute sidebar of what this could mean, I'm re-posting it here:

Imagine the pitch meetings at Disney-Marvel studios, though some might not go over too well.

--"The Hulk IV: Nightmare at Pooh Corner" (Finally Eeyore's got something to really whine about.)

--Beauty gets a new Beast. His name is Thor, and his hammer is huge.

--Captain America, sensing that Hannah Montana's virtue may again be at risk, bars her from a photo shoot with the Jonas Brothers.

--Belle, Ariel, and Jasmine form the Princess Justice League for land, sea, air smackdown with Mystique and Enchantress.
Naturally, as the Marvel and Disney cultures mix, some clash-of-content problems await the vertical integrators:

--The Thing will have to put on some real pants!

--Pluto and Wolverine will now have to share the same kennel. Guess who wins the battle for table scraps?

--No more bra-less scenes in the rain for Spider-Man's on-screen squeeze, Kirsten Dunst.

--In the "X-Men" films, Storm will now be played by...Minnie Mouse (Sorry, Halle--the ol' girl still has studio pull.)
I wouldn't worry too much about it... I'm sure Marvel still has a lot of control over what their movies, et al. will look like.
