Purple Punishment

Kelly Washington

59 posts in this topic

I know we have had a few threads about him already. I really hope he is our #2 receiver come Week 1. He is physical, has alot of flare and flamboyancy that no Ravens receiver has ever had. His play backs up his attitude as well. I really see more out of him than I have seen in Clayton these past few years. One great game against Cincy cannot define Mark. Im not saying get rid of Clayton. I just think Washington would be a bigger threat lined up on the outside. We could throw Clayton in the slot and let him burn up line backers and weaker DBs. What are your thoughts on this people?

I really REALLY like Kelley Washington. I've said it before and even though Kelley's older, he reminds me Antonio Bryant in Tampa. He's tall, big-bodied and has good enough speed to stretch the field. Best of all, he's not afraid to afraid to lower his shoulder and take on defenders like he against Carolina. Flacco won't go to him as much as he does Mason but I think Washington can be a very good #2 regardless of whether Clayton comes back or Demetrius stays healthy.

And I agree about Clayton doing damage in the slot.

Kelley won't leapfrog both Clayton and Williams unless they are both injured (which lets face it is a possibility). I don't think he has great speed so he is a better fit on the inside as opposed to the outside. I like him as our 3rd or 4th receiver out of the slot.

Demetrius will be the #2 if Clayton's not at 100% by week 1. But i really like Washington, he's got that swagger, he makes plays. I like when he starts celebrating like crazy after making a catch. It pisses off defenders i'm sure. :D

I just see Washington as a smash mouth receiver and he is making plays for us. I think he deserves to be on that field in Week 1

Bottom line is he has done everything right up to this point. He's made all the catches and seems to be developing well with Joe. I'm excited.

Mace is slow too, but he's just fine. I think it's time to go in a different direction, because what we have now isn't really cutting it.

Williams will not be the number 2 if Clayton misses week 1. Washington has been getting it done as the number 2 for the last 3 pre season games.

True but don't try and compare Washington's route running to Mason's. IMO Washington is an ideal slot receiver. Thats not to say he can't play outside I just think he'd be better going over the middle and battling linebackers and safeties.

Exactly, we have Joe Flacco with a cannon and extremely good accuracy, Its time to get guys on the field that will stretch the field. D Mase did have a few good cathces this preseason, but I think we need to see some Justin Harper and Kelly Washington out on the field of play our Number 1 and 2 receivers are possession type receivers with limited ability to open the field up and make a BIG play to set up a great run game. Time to mix it up and try different things.

I agree. No way Washington beats out Clayton unless he's still hurt on Week 1, but Williams is a different story, since Washington has outplayed him in the preseason and has caught more passes from Flacco. If I'm not mistaken, Williams also stayed out with the second team Saturday, unlike Washington. Plus, baltimoreravens.com listed Washington, not Williams, as starting for Clayton against Carolina. http://www.baltimoreravens.com/Gameday/Games/Season_2009/Pre_Season/Preseason_3.aspx

I disagree. Washington has the big body that Flacco can hit on the outside. Clayton has proved that he can burn weaker CBs so why not have a smaller speedster like him dust off the LBs and Safeties?

Eh, I like Washington in the slot too. He's a big receiver who can and will take big hits over the middle. We saw a couple of these plays in the last game vs. the Jets. Plus, he will be able to knock some of these nickle backs around and break tackles.

Let Clayton use his speed to race down the side lines opposite Mason.

Washington should be a 3rd receiver for us (behing Mase and Clayton), if Dwill isn't or alteast hasn't shown he can be consistent. Also it seems like the coaches are not confident Dwill can play a full year. IMO, if Clayton does not have a great year he may not even be here next year. I hope he does though because Mark is one of my favorite Ravens!

Kelly just seems to be a bit more physical and Claytons' injury has certainly helped the maturation process between Joe and Kelly.

Traditionally, teams like the bigger guys in the slot; but I agree that Clayton may be a good exception to that "rule" because he has very good acceleration, which comes in handy when you're in tight quarters. I like Washington in the slot too, so it's really win-win I think. I would just prefer that Washington get a majority of the looks between him and Clayton.

In theory, I agree, but that hasn't worked out for us over the years.

Clayton on the outside worked very well in '06. I personally think Washington should be on the outside because of his size but he could do a lot of damage in the slot too.

Agreed. Williams was healthy enough to play against the Panthers, but he still came in as a slot receiver. Washington should definitely be the number 2 if Clayton is still down. He has played extremely well and physical.

If mase is too slow,The defenders must be super sluggish! If he's slow, i cant tell! he catches just about everthing, and shakes his defender for more yards as well. He's tooooo reliable on 3rd downs to shove him in the back seat. Come on now, the guy catches touchdowns with an injured shoulder!! I think you meant "everything except Mace isn't really cutting it"!

I disagree entirely, Washington has had a very good preseason and camp - what has Williams done? Washington has the inside track to the third receiver right now.

At this point I think Kelly Washington will make a great #2 or slot receiver. He has that height that we don't have in any other receiver and he has proven so far that he can catch the ball even under pressure. I like what I've seen from him in the preseason and look forward to seeing his contribution to this offense in the regular season.

i would like to see washington as a number 2 and clayton as the slot... i think clayton going underneath would allow him a lot more YAC, since he is good after the catch

Seriously, regarding DWill - I don't get the feeling at all that Flacco has developed any "chemistry" with him whatsoever. I can barely remember him being thrown to but a few times. Just a gut feeling. Washington, on the other hand, has done more than I could have hoped of for a guy basically off the street. Think about it for a minute...where would we be without some of Washington's catches this preseason?

We would be in the same spot we are now which is 0-0 in the regular season or the season that matters. But i get your point in that he has made some clutch catches.

Yes, of course Mason was the exception, which is why I said "he's fine". But Mason is slow. Sorry.
