My Personal Observations On The Game

90 posts in this topic

What is with the ravens and picking up coaches who are renowned for one thing Billick : Offense and Harbaugh : Special Teams, and them having no impact in that area. We are going to lose A LOT of games if these teams keep getting the ball within our territory.

Also we might as well also put L.J smith on IR now as he got hurt just running a route. And what the hell is with Oniel Cousins? He is terrible every time our offense is out there and you see a flag it is a holding on him.

I'll give troy the benefit of the doubt as that second team O-Line was absolutely atrocious and did not even benefit McGahee one bit in trying to earn his starting position back.

Other then that Ravens D was pretty good but we are still having trouble taking down backs that go to the flats.

My absolute favorite part though was Joe Flacco in the pass game. He may have been 8/18 but a majority of those passes were consecutive plays where the DB's were backed off to defend it. He is starting to look like a QB who can throw accurately anywhere on the football field.

By the way why is Frank Walker and Evan Oglesby still here? They can't cover anyone.

Hey did you realize we won? Did you realize it was 21-7 with the starters in (14-0 with ray and ed). Im very content. Its preseason.

Also on a side note the reporters need to stop riding Sanchez ****. They said he did really good at the end. Leon Washington did all the work on the first play and on the second it was a nice pass.

im disappointed in the 2nd team guys but we did win albeit barely...but tomorrow im gonna rewatch the game and give some unbiased breakdowns on both sides of the ball. My football intelligence is more defensive oriented so excuse me in advance if the breakdown has more and better info on the defensive side.

Alright I was upset too about the game. Our offense looked terrible later in the game. But then again I always look at how the Colts and Patriots look during preseason and their offenses don't put up any sort of points but when it comes to the regular season they are lights out. Most teams do not function without their star players. And the Ravens are no exception. Without Reed our secondary is weak, and without Ngata and Lewis and Gregg, they can run all day on us. Let's not freak out too much about this because whenever we take out our star corners we have to put in bums that get lit up all day.

We are deep in some positions but let's face it there is a drop off in talent from our backups. But it wouldn't make sense if that didn't happen. We are ok. Something tells me the Jets really came out to play because of the Ryan rivalry.

Our special teams is a little weak but let's be realistic. Most of the players that play special teams are young players. They will get better and when we knock it down to our 53 man squad then we will have a better special teams. Lets not freak out yet. The Jets are pretty good, lets not forget about that.

Ray Rice, nice work on the move. Isn't a hammer though, Parmele could be? McGahee looks in better shape but maybe lost a bit of quickness from 2 years ago.

- Ngata and Gregg, can't be moved as usual. Ngata shows his zone coverage :P

- Ray is moving faster than last year

- Kruger, still gets stuck on blocks at times but tracks the ball and moves very well, did better than expected in zone.

- Jameel McClain, camp struggles with the position didn't show up. Great nose and inside blitz.

- Prescott Burgess, moves better and faster than advertised, no trouble with blocks and has a great nose for the run. Big hitter.

- Oher and Gaither, held up easily for the entire game. Gaither got a bit complacent and was beat once (the defender hammered Flacco)

- Birk, moves guys off the ball, makes beautiful seal blocks

- Ladarius Webb, nice day out for the rookie, saved the game

- Our backup D-line don't shed or hold the point very well, McKinney is our biggest DT and he gets knocked around a lot.

- Antwan Barnes, average speed and burst for a 4.4 guy. Not enough pressure.

- Our corners, especially Walker, Oglesby and Washington. These guys couldn't mirror their shadows. At least Washington made a nice open field tackle.

- Chester, surprise surprise beaten on the first snap. Who cares if he can block downfield if he can't keep defenders off Flacco? Always the guy being knocked backwards.

- Backup o-line, nothing special, Reitz could be something if he gets bigger. Oneil was terrible again.

- Special teams was off, Nakamura missed another tackle in the open. Webb made a mistake by not covering the ball or carrying on the outside hand but that probably wont happen again.

Overall we got some good pressure but struggled against the pass. (edit)*Walkers* miss on the press was horrible.

None of the 2nd team looked good. Wasn't happy with the big gains by Leon Washington, including the special teams. Gano is pretty much gone, Haushcka locked his spot tonight. Props to Gano for the tackle on Washington though. Flacco made some big throws. Very disappointed with the 2nd team offense. Horrible tempo.

He also almost lost the game, hopefully the coaches teach this guy the basics in ball control.(Left Sideline/Left Arm - Right Sideline/Right Arm), but that was a good play to save the game

I am not worried about ST. They looked worse last offseason.

One thing that did worry me was our run defense, even with Ray and Ed in. The Jets got off some pretty good runs on us, I dont ever like seeing that preseason or not.

I also wasnt at all impressed with either kicker tonight. Haushcha made his field goal but barely. I think its time to call up AutoMATTic.

I can't contribute much as I didn't see the game, some interesting points raised though. Lots to work on, nice to see turnovers generated (albeit against a rookie QB).

How did Willis look? Unfortunately I was in class and missed the 2nd quarter.

I dont agree. I think Washington probably played the best off all our corners tonight. The one play he gave up was called back because the reciever pushed off, which is why he gave it up.

Are you talking about on the Clemens TD? That was 41, Frank Walker, not 31, Fabian Washington.

Our first string was strong. Play of the day was the rice td on a great redzone call. I want to see our passing game improve but I hope we don't go on the verge of being pass happy. Our strength is still the run game in my eyes.

Willis had one really nice run, where he avoided a bunch of tacklers and picked up a first and then some. Other then that he was pretty much stuffed but he was playing with the 2nd team OL. Not very much out of our running game in general tonight, especially early. We seemed to pass more then anything else.

I doubt we will pick up Stover and if we don't I really think that Haushka has won the battle. Gano missed the FG last week and this week.

Yeah I noted that also - probably because we know we'll be able to lean on the run regardless. As for Willis - glad he had a nice run and yeah, playing with that 2nd string offensive line won't give you as many opportunities.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Not only that, but I didn't even catch all that.. you have great awareness! Maybe it was because my kid was crying the whole time. But I do agree with Neepo, Washington didn't look bad to me. Maybe I missed something though.

Was that later in the game? I'm just tryna work out if I saw the same blown coverage, coz I saw Walker get burnt as well in the 4th quarter.

Washington only got beat once and that was because the WR pushed off and was called back, otherwise he did well. Walker got beat consistently during the game.

The Jets 3rd team wideouts schooled Frank Walker. My guess is Rex gave orders to go right at him and they did. He got beat for a TD and I am pretty sure it was him that got beat for the pass that set up the last TD of the game.

He's as good as gone.

Fabian got that crap from Corey Ivy. I wish they'd cut it out as well. I am also not a fan of seeing Kelley Washington celebrate every first down. Especially, after you've dropped two passes, one of which was a TD.

I've stuck up for him before but if that's how you're going to play against 2nd stringers when your competing for a roster spot, the Ravens are not for you.

Lol, I saw that. Any excessive celebration or show boating in preseason is out of place - although I suppose to not perform at regular intensity/with regular mannerisms could result in less effort...

Yea Frank Walker needs to go. He can't cover. They were picking on him the second half.

I really wanted Ray to catch that pick and run it back. That would have been awesome watching that on ESPN with the commentary bashing Sanchez. Ahhhh...

I'll comment further tomorrow once I'm in a state to comment (lol), but to make a quick remark about the first point that was brought up, it should be noted that coaches who often specialize in an area often struggle in that area once they become head coaches. Why? Because they can't be as hands-on with that side of the football as they once were as a coordinator. That's just the way it goes. The head coaching position is an administrative position.
