"Updated, 11:16 a.m. | Plaxico Burress, the former Giants receiver, pleaded guilty on Thursday morning to attempted criminal possession of a weapon, in a deal with Manhattan prosecutors that will send him to prison for two years.

Justice Michael H. Melkonian of State Supreme Court accepted the guilty plea. Under the plea agreement, along with the two-year prison sentence, Mr. Burress, 31, is to be sentenced on Sept. 22 to two years of post-release supervision. With good behavior, he will be eligible for release after slightly more than 20 months."

safe to say you can remove him from your fantasy teams!

I did. I've started an "Headcases and Ex-Cons" team. HEC for short.

Or, I would if I played fantasy football.

Anyone else think the sentence was a little harsh? Especially considering the double jeapordy he'll face with the NFL?

He's extremely lucky he hit himself, and not another person. You make an interesting point though, considering Stallworth killed a person and got less than a month. That may not be the best comparison, since Stallworth's was an accident, and Burress was being a bonehead (ever hear of a safety, Plax?). Apparently, New York is a very bad place to commit a "gun crime". I'd imagine Goodell won't be too lenient on him either.

NY has mandatory sentences for gun offenses. Being in Manhattan made it even worse. They have some real tough laws/sentences.

I think that's around the standard punishment for this type of crime in New York. It was probably made to limit the number of concealed, unlicensed firearms in the city, cut down on the violent crime, yaknow? Burress isn't a thug but his actions were stupid, all the same.

His career is over. By the time he gets back in the NFL, he'll be 33 or 34 years old. After his 2 years in prison and what could be a mandatory 1 year suspension from the NFL.

Agreed, his playing days are definitely over.

No arguement from me about him being negligient, irresponsible, immature and stupid. I'm just looking at the whole "criminal" and "criminal background" thing. I feel that one year would have been sufficient. He needed punishment, but he's not a danger to society nor does he need to be rehabilitated.

Yeah, well the prosecution offered him a 3 month prison sentence if he would have accepted a plea bargain back in May. (Link). I agree with you, he's not a danger, but that's the letter of the law.

Link said, "Now here's the interesting thing. No one ever followed up on this story to confirm it. So I can't confirm that Papa's story is dead-on, or if it's rife with inaccuracies."

That sounds awfully stupid since back then he knew Mayor Bloomberg wanted blood AND there's really a 15 year sentence attached to one of the charges. I have a hard time buying that.

That said, there was a lawyer on Sirius today that said Burress' lawyer was stupid for taking it before the grand jury in the first place. I think he should have AT LEAST gotten a suspended sentence or a year. Just not two where he has to serve a minimum of 2/3.

Such a dope. A gun? Really? Well I hope he felt cool and safe with it, because it just ended his career early and put him in jail. I almost feel sorry for him. It is a harsh sentence, but that's the law in NY. If he wanted to carry a gun so bad he should have played in a state that allows them.

In my personally opinion
Stallworth > Vick > Burress and they get the harshest sentences in reverse. I think Goodell will pity Burress, and make his NFL sentence as "time served"

Many people don't realize how easily Stallworth got off with his sentence.

DUI Manslaughter is a minimum of 30 years in prison, he was incredibly lucky.

The victim shared responsibility for his own death. The victims family also didn't seem interested in much more than money. Not that it matters, but he was BARELY ove the limit which makes me question just how "impaired" he was. Had he not been drinking, would the result have been the same? I think it may have.

Personally, I think this sentence is absurd... Donte' Stallworth drives DRUNK and KILLS another human being and gets 30 days in jail, and he can't drive ever again. Burress shoots HIMSELF and gets TWO YEARS (20 months with good behavior)? Something is definitely wrong with this system of so-called "justice." I'm not even going to mention Leonard Little's offenses...

From fanball.com:

The News
According to ProFootballTalk.com, there are rumors floating around that the lawyers for receiver Plaxico Burress could be seeking a Presidential pardon for the receiver. Burress was sentenced to 2 years in jail after pleading guilty to a felony weapons charge.

Our View
Sounds pretty crazy, right? It's actually not as far-fetched as you might think. There is a strong belief that Burress was done in by his celebrity, and many people in the sports community and outside of it feel that he got a raw deal. It might be a long-shot, but don't be shocked if more news comes out regarding this situation.

Sounds like a wild rumor, but who knows?

Mandatory minimum for his crime was 3 1/2 years. He plead guilty and was handed a 2 year sentence (parole eligible after 20 months)
