Please Do Not Have A Lockout In 2011!

42 posts in this topic

I pray that the NFL does not have a lockout in 2011! I cannot go a whole year without NFL football. I will probably cry if this goes down. Please do not let this happen! 1 whole year without watching the Ravens play! Ray Lewis will be 38?? in 2012. He'll probably retire! Ed Reed will be 33? He'll probably retire. And our franchise quarterback Joe Flacco will lose a whole year of his prime. Please do not let this happen. I don't know how I would cope with it!

It won't happen. And if it does, we'll have bigger problems on our hands. The NFL is a gargantuan business, it's international and worth billions upon billions of dollars. If it stopped, this "economic crisis" will seem like losing a fiver in the laundry..

But, again, it won't happen.

AFL, CFL, UFL......
[/quote]

Didn't the AFL just close up shop?

It's really hard to imagine today's NFL having a lockout. It's such a money-making colossus you'd think they'd work a lot harder at reaching an agreement.

Personally, an NFL lockout is one of those things on my disaster list right above global flooding and right below a major impact event.

As everyone has stated, there's too much money at stake for the lockout to truly happen. Too many jobs (not just players and coaches), too many licensing agreements/sponsorships breached (TV deals, merchandise, etc.), and too much potential revenue lost. Both sides will come to an agreement (NFLPA and owners), one way or the other.

And NHL. It happens sometimes, even if money is to be lost.

Live for today and worry about tomorrow when it happens.

But, if there is a LO, I think the PSL owners should have the right to go to the stadium and use it as a playground, for cookouts, etc...

They won't make us pay for our tickets, will they?

You might have to pay at first. But for every game not played, you'd receive a refund.

Ah, good point. But to be honest, I think there might be more money in television tied up in the NFL than in MLB. I don't have exact numbers, but I'm pretty sure the DirecTV Sunday NFL Ticket deal alone trumps whatever MLB might've put together. Then again, player contracts in MLB are so ridiculously large (and so much of that money is directly tied to the owners), that they make the NFL's TV deals a moot point here.

Either way, I think with the way that revenue is streamed through the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, there'd be too many people affected for the owners and/or the NFLPA to soften their respective stances and come to a temporary compromise. It's better to table the issue than to risk losing a season.

It will never, ever, ever happen. There is too much to lose economically by not having football. Obama will bail them out. Think of all the sponsers, who television sales, bars, restraunts, sport stores. It would affect so much.

I'd say the chance of that happening is about the same chance of the O's winning the World Series this year.

The obama part was a joke. But a lot of companies and jobs would be lost because of a lock out.

If there was a lockout I would boycott the bejesus of the nfl.

I'll be damned if a bunch of filthy stinking rich owners and a bunch of juiced up freak athletes would be so greedy that they forget who they are serving.

Both of these sides can do nothing without the fans. If nobody cared about football, players and owners would be broke.....well the owners would be fine because they would continue to run the businesses that allowed them the money to buy a franchise. All owners are just wealthy jock-sniffing entrepreneur nerds.

Back to my point: Do you know how much the players and owners of professional lacrosse teams get paid? That is what I'm talking about, the fans need to knock both sides off their pedistles(spell check).

You wouldn't have much to boycott.. there being a lockout and all..

It's not as simple as you make it out to be. Unless you majored in economics, I don't think you could understand how complex and intricate these collective bargaining agreements are. So sit with you back turned to the TV every Sunday, if you must, the rest of us will be watching football.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do but according to PFT but the Owners voted to expand the NBC deal from 2011 to 2013. I know this means all channels that air football games now have a deal to air till 2013. Not sure if this is effecting the lockout though.

Report: Owners agree to extend NBC deal by two years
Posted by Mike Florio on August 19, 2009 3:08 PM ET
We mentioned Tuesday that the NFL owners, who have in Chicago for a five-hour business meeting, could vote to extend the broadcasting deal with NBC by two years.

According to Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal, the voted has occurred. And the extension has been approved.

Per Kaplan, an announcement is expected soon.

The extension makes all of the rights deals run through 2013, setting the stage for a high-stakes game of musical chairs.

I want a lockout!!! Why?? Because the leagues salary cap is stupid!! I want the players to stand up like MLB players did. Theres no salary cap in Baseball and it hurts the Orioles than helping them to win. The NFL Salary cap only helps certain teams like the Colts and the Steelers. Steve Biscotti is the George Steinbrenner in the NFL. So i favor a strike or a lockout. And the Ravens would become the NY Yankees of the NFL!

I was suggesting that if there was a lockout and a return to action(like the MLB), I would boycott the NFL upon its return.

And you don't have to be an economist to understand collective bargaining agreements. Was Jimmy Hoffa(famous union organizer) an economist? How about Gene Upshaw(player turned head of NFLPA)? It is simple business and if no fans were interested in the nfl there would be nothing to collectively bargain over because the owners are wise businessmen who would find profitability outside of football.

Does the professional lacrosse league have a players union? (probably should, i heard they dance for nickels in the offseason)

The NFL generated 6.54 billion dollars in revenue in 2007. Lehman Brothers generated 19.257 billion dollars in revenue in 2007.

Lehmans is one of ten banks close to its size and it was totally dissolved. Did you feel the impact? The NFL is peanuts in comparison to businesses in other industries and if it ceased to exist its 6.54 billion dollars of revenue would be evenly dispursed into other sports or the cfl or afl or bring back arena league, etc. In the macroeconomy, the nfl dissolving would not be a big deal.
