They had slowly been recouping their money as of April, I think. Either way, with the lowered production costs of the PS3 and the likely boost in sales this coming Fall/Winter, they'll start to turn a profit by the end of the fiscal year.

I see...
That reminds me, do you know how long this price cut is going to last? Like will it still be here for a certain winter holiday?

It's permanent. Though, there are rumblings that the drop could go as far as $249 right before the winter shopping season.

Good find Franchise, I need to get one or the other (xbox 360 that is) since the Wii decided to skip my demographic (22 yr old male). So Madden looks to childish and all the other games are for fat old people. So, my quesiton to you is, what are the top ten PS3 games in your opinion.

Top 10 PS3 games?

Console-exclusive:
1) inFAMOUS
2) Killzone 2
3) Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
4) MLB 09: The Show
5) Resistance 1 & 2 (tied)
6) Metal Gear Solid 4
7) WipEout HD
8) LittleBigPlanet
9) Fat Princess
10) Gran Turismo 5

Now, here's my list adjusted to include multi-platform titles available on PS3:

1) Fallout 3
2) inFAMOUS
3) Grand Theft Auto IV
4) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
5) Batman: Arkham Asylum
6) Killzone 2
7) UFC 2009 Undisputed
8) Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (downloadable title, update of the old PlayStation puzzle game...it's addictive)
9) Madden NFL 10
10) Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

I'll admit, Puzzle Fighter should actually be higher because it's my favorite game of all-time, but for this list, I was being objective. It's an underrated gem of a game (no pun intended) and I highly recommend you check it out. It's a cheap downloadable title, going for something like $6.99 on PlayStation Network. Loads of hours lost playing that game, though. Once you get used to it, it's ADDICTIVE.

Well since my old PS3 suddenly broke right after I received Madden, I've caved in and pre-ordered the new PS3 Slim on Amazon using my $10.00 credit from the Madden pre-order.

I've also debating on sending in my old PS3 to Sony to repair for $150.00. I have a feeling they are just going to send me a new one. If I do this, it's one less Christmas gift I have to worry about.

FYI,

Also the original release date I believe was said to be September 1st. But now apparently it might be released to some retailers startingg tommorrow August 25th!. Amazon and Gamestop both are saying the release date is Aug 25th. Best Buy did say September 1st the other day, but now they have removed that date.

It looks to be that the PS3 system will start showing up on shelves tommorrow. So if you want one, you better act quick, because there is a possiblity of a supply shortage.

FYI,

It's being reported that Amazon (USA) has already sold out of the pre-order PS3 Slims. You can still pre-order but estimates of next shipment date look like 1 to 2 months. So it looks like there will be high demand for this model.

I'm glad I got in on the pre-order before this occured. Hopefully they do not screw me over. My estimated shipment date is August 25th, but there is still some confusion if this date is true or not.

I have the PS3 Slim in hand!

Went to Best Buy, picked it up the shelf, the best buy guy to the side says "that's the last one". Sold. Cancelled my order with Amazon. Not taking my chances with them being sold out.

...LUCKY! I'm jealous. I don't quite wanna take the plunge yet while my current PS3 is still in good working order. At the same time, though...it'd be great to have two PS3's! One for home and one to lug around with me to work (or even play in class w/ my laptop...all the way in the back of a lecture hall, with hopefully no one noticing...lmao)

The decision was easily made once my PS3 broke. I couldn't wait (I have Madden sitting in its case for the last week), repair would take too long. So this release was perfect timing. I had no plan on spending $299 last week, I would have held onto my old PS3.

I did not know that this version has an updated processor that is suppose to make the fan quieter and make the system more energy efficient. Plus the Matte finish is nice, no more finger prints.

Strange as it sounds, those were some of the big selling points for me. The quieter fan makes a huge difference in a bedroom as small as mine, especially with the doors shut at night while everyone's sleeping. Not only that, but my room has poor circulation, so whenever I have both my laptop and PS3 on (or even just the PS3), my room gets really warm, which is a pain during the summer. So with the more energy-efficient system, the PS3 should, theoretically, not run as hot and my room will subsequently not be as hot at night with the door shut.

As announced today at Sony's Gamescom press conference in Germany, the rumors of the PS3 Slim are true! Roughly 33% smaller, 36% lighter, and 34% less power consumption -- all with the same features of the current generations of PS3 (Bluetooth, Wi-fi, Blu-Ray, free online gaming, media streaming) but with a 120GB hard drive and for the lowered price of $299! Additionally, as of tomorrow (8/19/09) all current PS3 models are also dropping to that price!

Source: IGN.com

So, with all the features and the lowered price, will the PS3 finally beat the 360? Personally, given that a comparable 360 at $299 is only 60GB and has fewer features (while the 120GB Elite model is $499, also with fewer features than the PS3), Microsoft needs something BIG to beat Sony's value right now.

Will this convince anyone to buy a PS3 over the 360 now?

uhm the 120 elite is actualy 299.99and the updated price you forgot no more other os install option for the ps3 and on top of the that sony and the updated cpu is because they had over 70 catch fire and a few more caused fires , in the hardware community both the 360 and ps3 are refered to as gaming and heating alternatives

You have to keep in mind when I posted that. That was literally within minutes of the announcement, so the Xbox 360 120GB Elite model's price wasn't slashed yet. In fact, that price cut wasn't announced until just last week. Additionally, the removal of the OS install option is a minimal loss since very few PS3 users were actually installing Linux or anything else on there; to be honest, it was a niche feature, and the advancements in homebrewing for the PS3 have been very limited. Besides, who's really using their PS3 as an actual computer.

But still, when you match up the two consoles at the same price point, the PS3 gets the edge because of the other entertainment features. The gaming libraries are comparable because of the gradual shift away from console exclusivity in today's economy, and online multiplayer is improving on the PlayStation Network. At the end of the day, you'd have to buy additional accessories for the 360 (and a subscription to Xbox Live) to have the same functionality as the PS3, and there still wouldn't be a Blu-Ray option. Plus, the ability to upgrade the hard drive is a major plus, considering how digital downloads are picking up steam, both in demos and full purchases. You simply get more bang for your buck with the PS3.

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up that the final firmware update for 2009 is expected to be available September 1. Here are the changes:
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/08/18/playstation-3-firmware-v3-00-update/

Also, played my new PS3 slim last night. Big, Big difference in noise reduction. While the PHAT PS3 sounds like it's going to blow up, the new Slim is so quiet. When I first heard it, my first reaction was, that's it?...nice. They also added actual buttons for standby, and eject. I guess they wanted to eliminate fingerprints entirely.

I personally have been branded by Playstation. I'm use to their controllers, I dig their PS3 games. So something major needs to occur for me to switch me to the XBox.

I do hear great things about the XBox that seperates it from PS3. Such as, the online gaming is better (even though I do not use this feature). And they also allow the Netflix instant streaming. I'd really this feature to come to the PS3. I had to buy a Roku box to compensate.

The new PS3 slim w/ its price reduction, is a very good deal. Considering that, one of the major flaws pointed out by haters is the bulky size of the regular PS3.

Microsoft had to come up with another way to get its customers HD movies now that the HD hvd's they were using are no longer availible. You can rent or buy movies on the PS3 network any way. Microsoft will have to do something with the game system cause these game files are getting bigger and bigger, with the technology they are using soon you will have to have 2 disc for one game.

Final Fantasy XIII is already all-but-confirmed as needing three discs to run.

See, even if Microsoft gave 360 users the option to upgrade their HDD with any regular laptop hard drive (rather than a proprietary one like they currently have), doing an install of all the data on the extra discs would still be massive and take up A LOT of space, considering each single-layer DVD holds 4.7GB of data while a single-layer Blu-Ray disc holds 25GB of data.

I know disc-swapping isn't that big of a deal since that's what we all used to do back in the day with most RPGs -- but we also had to buy multiple memory cards back then. So just because we used to do something, doesn't mean it still needs to be done.

That's my main gripe with disc-changing. I know it makes me sound lazy, but why should I have to get up to swap a disc out? Also, it's a bit anti-climactic to suddenly have to change a disc in the middle of an exciting part of the game. And on top of that, unless the game prompts you to save immediately beforehand, there's always the possibility of the game freezing right after you swap discs, thereby losing what you've just done since your last save. I remember that happened to me when I played an RPG (I wanna say Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete) and I had to go through an entire (unskippable) cutscene all over again.

:D I love that game!

Disc swapping never bothered me, but it makes me wonder what is in the game that makes it need that... We haven't had multiple discs in FF since what nine, eight?

It's mostly graphics and full voice-acting. And the actual world itself is probably large, what with the amount of detail they're giving to each individual character central to the plot.
