So you'd rather have an unproven RB in an already crowded backfield added to our team rather than a HOF quality LB?

thats what i was thinking... all im saying in this thread is im not sold on J-John and if Merriman would want to come back to his home state then we would have the nastiest LB core ever

"J-John" you mean? lol.

The Chargers ARE going to re-sign Merriman despite anything you may have heard on wikipedia or PFT. It's a pipe dream.

I think they would like both English and Merriman to stay for a very long time. He's not leaving.

I agree. After seeing Oher in action, I'm glad Ozzie picked him but I really wanted the team to get English. He plays exactly like Suggs.

he needs to get healthy first. Plus it all depends on how the other LB do before the Chargers will let him go.

With us locking Suggs up to a big deal, I can't see us spending the type of money Merriman is going to command, and I hope we would instead focus on locking up Ngata and Gaither.

I'm scared to even think about free agency next year. We have a lot of guys who's contracts expire next year.

Merriman in a Ravens uniform in 2010??? That's scary to even think about especially playing opposite of Suggs. I would love for that to happen.... but again, just like everybody else has said, where we going to get the money he will command from? We just set the bar with Suggs' $63 Million dollar deal, Merriman if healthy and goes to the Pro Bowl, will command much higher than the $63 million Suggs got. Here's how I see it:

1) Chargers re-sign him to a long term and similar deal that Suggs got

2) They Franchise Tag him until they can come up with the Money to give him the long term deal(That's what we did with Suggs)

3) Let him go and replace him with Larry English.

Options for the Ravens:

1) In a Uncapped year, throw everything at him to get him, except Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder will probably break the bank to get him so we will have to bid with Dallas and Washington.

2) Under new CBA: Lock up Gaither and Ngata FIRST than...... well we are done and there is no way we get Merriman due to Clayton, Yanda, Grubbs and other key guys potentially hitting the market with Gaither in 2010 for whom we need to keep. (Remember Ngata becomes a free agent in 2011. I see Ngata being Franchised once or twice like Suggs before we give him a long term deal)

Summary: If we go uncapped, dump Jarret Johnson and throw everything at Merriman, if we have a new CBA, let's just lock in Gaither and other Free Agents to keep the core of the team together.

P.S. Am I the only person who thinks that this thread will end up with someone trying this in Madden 10, than coming back on this board and saying how we should get him and how effective he was on the Ravens defense on the game. LOL

The ultimate question about this situation is will San Diego let him go?
If they tag him or find a loop whole to bring him back to their ball club.. Then we wouldn't even have a chance to consider him for a sign or even a trade..

well dont forget also that Rivers contract expires this year as well, which poses an interesting dilemma for the chargers because Rivers will certainly want the 100 mil contract that Roethlisberger and Manning recieved. So unless they get Rivers signed before the end of the season that franchise tag will almost certainly be going to Rivers,,,as well Sproles will need a new contract so they have 3 impact players that they need to get signed this offseason.

Not happening now, Chargers resigned Rivers, so that leaves Merriman and Sproles in contract years, Sproles will be easier to sign than Merriman so the chargers will Franchise Merriman.

1.) it would be an extreme waste of money to pay Merriman what he'll demand considering our depth at OLB
2.) I'll bet he never becomes a FA whether it be a long-term deal or Franchise Tag
3.) I'd much rather have Ngata and Gaither than Merriman...a lot more value
4.) we don't NEED to buy a big-name FA on defense, if anything target a marquee WR
5.) if Ozzie feels we need a pass rusher he'll find one in the draft a lot cheaper than Merriman

His knee is pretty messed up and was basically 1 play away from being career over last year. I'd rather save the money and give contracts to the players who had been here and earned it.
