Merriman In 2010

54 posts in this topic

Hey guys im pretty new to the board so if I step on toes or say something wrong let me know and I will adjust it... The topic I was thinking about was Shawne Merriman becoming a free agent next year. I dont know how many of you feel about J Jack, but im not the biggest fan. I would think that Merriman would absolutely love to return to his home state to play for the Ravens, and I know he has great admiration for Ray. I know he plays ROLB and so does T-Sizzle but how hard would it be for one of them to move to LOLB... I mean how scary would Suggs, Ray, Gooden, and Merriman be as a LB core???

Ozzie typically doesnt sign HUGE free agents and I understand that but any thoughts from you guys?

I think the only question here is that even possible to afford. The amount of money we would pay to not only obtain merriman but then maintain them for a couple years would be outrageous. Suggs baltimore discount only works until payday comes.

Yea, the Ravens would have to do some "Enron accounting" to afford him, I believe. But isn't it possible next year will be uncapped unless they sign the new CBA? That would be a scary set of linebackers.

Thats my thought, that next yr might be uncapped and Merriman would like to get back to the east coast... I would be ECSTATIC if there was someway somehow we could get him to join our D

Well lets say we do get the uncapped season and also get Merriman.

The greatest thing about having hybrids like Suggs is that he can also play DE. How would you feel having Suggs and Merriman both attacking from the right side?

I would love him also. But with Ngata and Gaither needing contracts relatively soon I don't see how we can afford it with out losing one or both of those players. Also with how much Suggs got I could see Merriman wanting 70 million

No O-line in the history of the NFL could stop Suggs and Merriman on the same side haha...

I agree we need to lock up Ngata first, but if its uncapped we need to do everything we can to get Merriman

yes if its uncapped we should go after him.

The thing I like about Biscotti is he seems like a owner that would write Ozzie a blank check when it comes to the football team. Not some owner who thinks he knows what he is doing, when the owner really doesnt know anything.

Well think about this also. If next year goes uncapped and we go after Merriman, you think another team out there wouldnt pay for Ngata to leave Baltimore. Haynesworth got a $100 million contract. I think Ngata is stronger, faster, and overall more dominant than Haynesworth. So, Ngata could want over 100 mil. Just some food for thought fellas. We can pick up somebody, but we wont keep everybody. Its the nature of the beast

Another thing, we could give Ngata and Gaither their contracts this year, and go into the uncapped year with all of our guys locked up.

Having a beast like Shawne Merriman in our LB core would be awesome. But, I don't think Ozzie would go for it unless if he felt like he was obligated to do so.

We do need to lock-up both Ngata and Gaither, that should be a priority.

The Chargers will re-sign him long before any team can get their hands on him. From all accounts, they love him in San Diego and he loves it there. As much as some people salivate at the idea, it's got about a one in a million chance, probably lower.

Basically, what Berad said. It is quite insane to think about though. I think we'd be pitching shutouts every other week, providing Ray was still Ray and Reed was still Reed. No run game. No Pass game. No points.

Suggs this year just set the minimum with his contract this year. So all big name Linebackers will want bigger contracts then Suggs. I don't think have that kind of money.

I don't see Merriman becoming a Raven and I don't want him either. Granted, he would probably be a perfect fit with his sack-dancing but I'll pass.

Yes, I've seen him play and he's a beast but he would command a huge contract and the team needs money for other positions.

I wouldn't want him, because of the money. Why invest a lot of money in our linebacker core, when our FO has shown that we are the best at drafting linebackers. Let's save the free agent money, for areas where we suck at drafting, aka WR.

Besides Gooden is going to be a beast, he'll be a leader of this D eventually. And beside him will be McClain, "the brute enforcer". A tangible combination, speed and power.

O ok... I thought u meant u wouldnt want him as a player if the money thing wasent an issue and i was just wondering why lol...

I still think that if we can lock up Ngata and Gaither this season and draft a WR next draft, then by some chance it really is an uncapped season we should do all we can and sign this beast to make our D the best ever (besides the 2000 D ;) )

IIRC, the Chargers said they are not going to resign him (which is further proven with Larry English being drafted)

Yep, thats what I heard... I also heard he wants to come back to the east coast, so who knows maybe we'll get another hometown discount ;) haha doubtful though

Trust me, if money wasn't an issue, I would LOVE for Merriman to be a Raven. Could you imagine, Suggs and Merriman rushing from the edges, one of the LBs flying up the middle with Ngata collapsing the inside? Forget the Sack Exchange, that would just be unfair.

I believe Darren Sproles is a free agent in 2010.

I would love to add him to our running back tandem more than Merriman.

Merriman seems like a perfect fit for the Redskins.

$$$$$ + proven player + Aging LB core - any team chemistry = Perfect fit for Redskins.

So you'd rather have an unproven RB in an already crowded backfield added to our team rather than a HOF quality LB?

The Ravens already have their Darren Sproles in Ray Rice. Rice isn't as fast or probably as quick but he can do everything Sproles does. Also, did you watch the first pre-season game? This team doesn't need Sproles.
