Palko, Raven's Quarterback?

27 posts in this topic

I have a suggestion for the Ravens. Since the third quarterback Beck is hurt, they should take a look at the Cardinal's fourth string quarterback. His name is Palko. He played very well against the Steelers in the first exhibition game. He played better than Lineart or St. Pierre did. Palko and Flacco have some history together. Palko was the reason Flacco transferred to Delaware State. At Pitt., Palko was the starter and played so well that Flacco couldn't get any playing time. It would be an interesting twist of fate that the guy that kept Flacco off the field in college is now his backup. With Flacco, Smith and Palko the Ravens would be set at quarterback. It's just a thought. My only motivation is have another quality player in the AFC North.

1) I think it could possibly be more of a distraction to flacco than a help, not saying that it would be, but yeah...

2) be prepared for a lot of hating to come your way for that last part lol (just saying)

That font color is, more than anything, a distraction. Hm, anyways, we don't need a 5th QB to come to town and learn our offense. No thanks.

What's wrong with just Drew Willy as our 3rd string? I mean, it's 3rd string, it's not like we really need a certain player to fill that spot. I can't believe a current 4th string QB was the one who pushed Flacco out of Pitt though.. haha. I guess educated people over there at U of Pittsburgh were kind of stupid with football, kinda like the football team that resides in that city.. ;)

Actually, Palko was the incumbent and Wannstedt didn't even give Joe a chance. Palko's play didn't keep Joe off the field - Wannstedt did. I'm not going to trash Wannstedt, but he made a bad call, as is made apparent by everything that has occurred since that time (and is part of the set of mishaps causing Wannstedt to no longer have NFL suitors).

You need to worry more about your QB situation than ours. Trying to bring drama to our boards is typical Steelers fan behavior - try to be original for a change.(edit - there are obvious exceptions, i.e., Warden)

EDIT: Oh, and Wannstedt, not Palko, was the reason Flacco transferred to the University of Delaware, not Delaware State. And as you struggle with the urge to ask, "What's the difference between the two?", feel free to compare UD's NFL MVP Rich Gannon and NFL Rookie of the Year Joe Flacco to your recent top QB's.

I don't know how Palko did in college, but I do know players can be good in college, and flame out in the NFL..... I mean look at Matt Leinart or just the opposite see Matt Cassel... (even though the last one might be a bad example)

Haha. After seeing the last part, I couldn't help but read the whole post over with a lisp.

But yeah, it would be a distraction and taking advise from you would be like Patton taking advice from Hitler, You are das enemy, da?

As you might tell from my name I have no love for pitt. But hey Wannstadt has been great for PSU recruiting in the Western PA area. Picking Palko over Flacco and hiring Matt Cavanaugh as offensive coordinator, absolute genius . Please don't replace him.

Oh and to keep this Ravens focused, don't bring in Palko. He wasn't better than some guy who went on to Div II Delaware.

Well, the obnoxious color and the even more obnoxious pseudo-signature cost him big time lol

This is exactly right. Palko was already penceled as the starter, Flacco knew this and Transferred to Deleware so where he knew he could start.
Although I do agree that wannstedt did make a bad call for not even letting Flacco compete for the starting job, I also beleive that some players thrive as a student-athlete and can come to the big stage and also do well. And there's guys that just dont cut it in NFL even if they were a steller student-athlete.

Palko was a pretty good QB at Pitt but struggled in the big games.

I don't know about Palko, but if the Bucs cut Josh Johnson i would sure like the Ravens to take a chance on him.

Josh Johnson is like a poor man's Vick or Kordell Steward. IMO he is actually a much better passer then both of those guys.

There are reports out of Tampa that Johnson won't make the teams, and with Freeman, Leftwich, and McCown all ahead of him that seems likely.

Troy Smith is probably a sure bet to leave Baltimore if someone offers him the chance to compete for the #1. Josh Johnson would give Cam the option to use him the same way he has used Troy.

I can remember people linking him to Baltimore last year around draft time because of Jim Harbaugh coaching him. If the Ravens get a chance to hop on this guy i say take it.

He'd be better then Beck, Willy, and Cleo IMO.

I wasn't trolling. I genuinely thought it was good idea. I understand why all of you are skeptical. First you didn't see Palko play and secondly, I'm a Steelers fan. I don't know the relationship between Palko and Flacco. Perhaps they are friends? As far as being hated, everybody knows the Steelers and the Ravens have the best rivalry in the NFL. Personally, I think it's great.

I've seen Palko play. He's not that great. TRUST ME. And you're right, I don't know of the relationship between Palko and Flacco -- perhaps because there is none? Either way, that doesn't matter, because regardless of how Flacco progresses in his career, he's already accomplished much more than Palko ever will.

It must be cool for Joe to know the guy he played behind and transfered around is playing 4th string somewhere, and he started here from day 1 and led our team to the AFC championship! I know it wasn't slated to go that way at the beginning of the year, but still seemed like a cool thought.

I bet Joe doesn't take any satisfaction from someone else lacking success. I bet he doesn't associate Palko with anything in his career. Joe knew he should have been given a shot at Pitt and he doesn't need to enjoy Palko's 4th string status to know he should have been #1 at Pitt.

Besides, Joe has about 1,000 other more important things to worry about.

Remember Danny Warful, Chris Wenke, Heath Shuller, etc., etc.? The list is endless. A lot more of the fizzled out guys than the opposite. Even Cassel still has plenty of time to be a bust...

Flacco is a class act, I do not believe he would have anything but good advice, and a helping hand to offer Palko.

I just think it would be nice to know that he made the right choice switching schools. Its not so much about the lack of success. He knew he should be the starter and couldnt get the chance.

I think he knew as soon as he got to Delaware. Delaware actually recruited him out of high school and they welcomed him with open arms when he decided to transfer. If he wasn't sure right away, the national championship run probably helped and the fact he got some advice and training help from Scott Brunner and Rich Gannon (Brunner being much more involved) didn't hurt either.

The difference between top-tier I-AA and middle-tier I-A is non-existent at the premiere player level (McNair, Flacco, Westbrook, Haley, Long, Warner, Taylor, etc.) Joe knew as the Blue Hen TD's accumulated and at the very least when he got the call from Ozzie. Palko really isn't any part of the story, except as a footnote.

I don't know if you could label cassel a bust being a 7th round draft pick, well I guess you could, but it isn't as big of a deal as if he was a 2nd round draft pick
