Watched the Ravens - skins game and I have to say that Troy Smith looks MUCH improved from the last time he played.
I know it is pre-season (and I have been a Smith doubter) but do you think he is actually better?

I think it's just a testament to how much the line has improved. All our QBs were tearing the skins D apart, and it's because they had the time to do it. Oher's looking an excellent prospect, and Gaither's now an established upper echelon tackle at worst, and the interior is strong with Grubbs and Birk. I'm pulling for Yanda to get healthy and take that other guard spot.
You know that saying:' 2/3 of earth is covered by water, the other 1/3 is covered by Ed Reed'? Its not true. He bought a boat.

If anything in the above post offended you, then Its a joke!

I thought he was always good, but yea he is probably the best back-up QB in the league other than Vick. Its gonna be hard to start him tho because we have already invested so much in joe flacco.

I would not say the line was improved that much. Smith was running for his life on a lot of plays and making throws on the run.

Wow, that sentence was utterly ridiculous. Michael Vick, hours after signing with a team after being out of the NFL for two years, is suddenly the "best back-up QB in the league". Hmm. Oh and it's not "hard" in any way, it's rather simple, he won't start.

Who do u think is better than M. Vick? I think the Vikings could be a good spot for Troy next year.

Yea but most of those times, Troy got out of the pocket to quickly. With allowed a guy like Orakpo to use his speed.

Troy played well, but he has a long way to go. But it was a good start.

Troy Smith played an excellent game and his movement out of the pocket was impressive. Showed his athleticism.

I'm glad he is healthy at the beginning of this year versus last year when he lost all the weight. I hope he continues to be part of making plays in our offense because I really like his confidence right now.

I wasnt that impressed, he was playing against the 2nd/3rd string defense and had moddest numbers at best. We didnt have any turnovers thats a plus

But it shows that as of now no one is going to beat him for that number 2 spot. Beck didn't look great. Hence Bringing back Drew.

Can a moderator please just end this thread?

Troy Smith was playing against number 2's but he was also playing WITH number 2's. I LOVE how the haters conveniently leave that part out. And he came back in to play against the guys fighting for a roster spot because Beck got hurt.

Nobody cares if you are impressed or not with Troy Smith. The fact is, he hasn't done anything but succeed when he gets a chance to play. He hasn't sabotaged our defense for years like Boller did. There is absolutely no reason to sneak in jabs and insults at him until he has given you a reason to.

I didn't know we weren't allowed to discuss Troy Smith, any likely progress he has made, and whether or not he may have improved.

Anyways, it's only preseason, but Smith played pretty well. I'll second the statement that he's only succeeded when he was given a chance to play. Look at the last few games two seasons ago. He had to start two games, but for the most part was very successful in those starts. However, we'll see if he has improved like some thought, or if it was just the 'Skins defense as we get further into the preseason.

Who is sneaking insults at Smith? An honest evaluation does not have to be an applause. It's true Smith didn't have great numbers if you look at them, he has "succeeded" in a modest role. That's his job on our team, back-up.

Hm most of the veteran back-ups in the NFL come to mind. They may not have the same athletic ability Vick has/had but they know the offensive system they are in, are reliable reserves, and have, most importantly, been practicing with an NFL team.

See: Charlie Batch, Derek Anderson/Brady Quinn, Shaun Hill/Alex Smith, Kellen Clemens/Marc Sanchez, Seneca Wallace, Tyler Thigpen, Jeff Garcia, etc.

And Troy Smith very well could land with the Vikings in 2010, they have a long history of QB woes since Culpepper left. They wouldn't need stellar quarterbacking out of him to succeed, just conservative game-management, which Smith has performed relatively well at.

Troy Smith looked good, it's going to be hard to keep him next year. There are a lot of scouts checking out back-up QBs. He could be given a chance, through a QB competition, next year with another team.

As far as the Redskins game, he did look pretty good. But as I stated a million time about the Skins, past their starters they have NO DEPTH whatsoever. All of our guys were looking silly out there.

Joe Flacco and co. were the only ones who legitimately faced real NFL players.

If u think those guys will be better than Vick in a few weeks then I don't know what to say. I'll pray for you

Should reserve the praise for Vick until he actually plays a snap, which won't even be til week 6. God... I'm so tired of hearing about Vick.

Anyways, I would really hate to see Smith go. I love having him on our team. Very reliable and talented back up. I actually was hoping he'd win the starting job last season (until I saw Flacco in action). If he were to leave, I'd hope him the best, and still root for him. I'd rather seen him in Purple and Black though, heh.

Vick is a better athlete than "those guys" - he's not a better QB. In 6 seasons, he has a career 53.8% completion % - worse than Kyle Boller. That would have ranked him 31st out of 32 starting QBs last year...
