Ravens-'skins: Thoughts & Observations

109 posts in this topic

Goods-

Frank Walker: was quiet all night, absolutely shut down his reciever. Quiet to all in support of his cut.

Troy Smith: 200 yards, 1 TD PLAYER OF THE GAME

Justin Harper: Solid routes and speed, work on hands

Matt Lawrence: strong runs and determination

Webb: Also quiet, great coverage

Yamon Figurs looks like he could add depth to WR, KR, and PR

Kelley Washington - Good routes and hands

Micheal Oher - finished each play with heart

Bads -

Chris Carr - Horrible coverage, looked timid in the back field

John Beck - weak arm and instincts

Oniel Cousins - Holding and overwhelmed.

I think the battle for the backup qb spot will die down some. I know it was just one game but troy looked pretty good. I love ray rice as a complete back,

- Michael Oher's toughness. Not enough can be said about how he was finishing plays. Sure, he can improve some of his technique, but his brute strength and willingness to sacrifice his body was outstanding. That'll serve him well in his career.

- Offensive productivity. Sure, there were some mistakes here-and-there (I'll get to that later), but there were plenty of reasons to get excited. Joe Flacco's distribution of the ball was refreshing, and Troy Smith showed off his arm strength on some nice downfield passes. The fact that the team was able to march onto the other side of the 50 on a regular basis and DOMINATED in time-of-possession is a good indication that this unit is grasping the fundamentals. There were several plays of 20+ yards.

- Depth on both sides. Defensive backups were just as impressive as the starters, and the RB corps was exceptional all-around.

Dislikes:
- Lack of discipline. From penalties to dropped passes, there was definitely a lack of focus from the younger guys. This can be rectified with repetition and time.

- Holes in secondary. Not sure if I can attribute it to scheme or miscommunication, but there were a few holes to start out with that the Redskins could've taken advantage of, had there not been dropped passes by their own receivers. Too many potential big plays that were luckily negated.

I'm loving what I'm seeing, and as long as the team continues to improve upon the little things, there should be plenty to look forward to, come Week 1.

No Turnovers by the OBs. Both Troy and Joe looked sharp and in controll of the offense.

Justin Harper was up and down, i look for much more consistency from him next game.

Ray Rice is gonna have a huge season, McGahee will be just as good.

I don't think we have anything to worry about from the defense side.

Derrick Martin covered well, Webb blitz well, Nakamura is a player, and Dawan Landry should make everyone forget Jimmy.

Oher is a beast, can't wait to see the whole OLine together. Can u imagine Oher and Yanda side by side, thats nasty. Cousins has to work really hard on his foot work and had placement.

Both Hausacka and Gano looked good tonite. Both kicked well, Gano was deeper on kickoffs but Steve was prefect from the field. Althought i think the last missed FG was a result of a high snap, but a miss is a miss. Early advantage Hauhska.

Paul Kruger is a player. He has a high motor and is strong. After a few more pounds and some pass rush moves he'll be a beast.

T.Good is a ball of energy. He fits prefect in the Ravens defense.

Barnes looks to have his explosiviness back. He looked really quick tonite.

McClain was fast, but sometimes uncontrollable. Needs to break down on those blitz and make sure he tackles the QB.

Kelly Washington and DWill looked good in limited time. Figurs worked well with Smith.

Edgar Jones and LJ Smith both looked good at TE. LJ is fast and will put much pressure on defenses this year.

The Dline depth and really good.

Didn't know we had as much depth at RB. I like these young guys.

All of this from just watching the game live, I'll be able to provide more once i get a chance to re-watch the game and break some things down.

All in all it was a good night for the Ravens, but we still have a lot of work to do.

I liked what Figurs was showing us tonight. I haven't been sold on him being done for us, and it was good to see him convince some others. Also I feel a bit more comfortable with Smith if Flacco goes down.

I thought we had some coverage issues and lack of discipline with the holding penalties, but with a 23-0 victory I can't complain much. Yes it's preseason, but being able to shut a team out through 4 quarters shows we have tremendous depth.

Likes:

- Rice looked good running and catching the ball.

- Justin Harper flashed playmaking ability.

- Kelly Gregg looked like the Gregg we all know and love.

- Derrick Martin. His interceptions put an end to a promising drive for the 'Skins.

Dislikes:

- The drops... <_<

- Jameel McClain missing two sacks.

- The secondary looked leaky early in the game and the 'Skins could've scored at least 2 TDs.

Ray Rice was my player of the game, touched the ball 8 times and gained 60 yards! He would have had even more if his blockers executed properly on a few of those screen passes. Flacco looked very solid and made some plays.

Troy Smith did not impress me much <_< below 50% completions, 200 yards on 30 attempts isn't much to boast about, and if that Figurs "catch" had been replayed, he wouldn't have been better than Beck.

- Oher's toughness. Great pick. The first string o-line was good but overall, the young linemen made some mistakes but did some good things by making good holes and good protection.

- RB Corp :: The depth here is NASTY. It's sad that some of them won't make the team but still, they all did well with the reps that they got. Give the coaches credit and the players.

- Kelly Washington had some good catches. LJ Smith made a nice catch but it looked like he got injured but we shall see. Coach said he got a real good stinger but is fine. We have some receivers, it's just making them play consistent. Figurs also stepped up and showed he's progressing as a wide-receiver and his punt returning looks more refreshing than last season.

- Our QB's :: Loved Flacco's progression and decision making. Smith had some bad throws and dropped balls but loved his toughness and swiftness around the pocket. Beck mad some good throws. All got a grasp of the offense and it's good we got guys that know the offense and are getting better each week.

- Defense had some holes but the overall SPEED and aggressiveness was great. Webb impressed me with his pressure coming off from the side and Barnes, Gooden played well. J. McClain overextended some plays so I got the uppernod with Barnes and Gooden.

- Glad to see Kelly Gregg back :) lol

Good overall game. Work on the penalties and little bit more on the fundamentals and we should be fine.

the running game was phenominal
kruger looked good, oher showed he ment what he said on draft day.
harper:early drops but some decent catches also
troy smith:makes me feel comfortable to know we have a backup like him

now hated the penalties, the pressure wasn't all there(but it's early still),dropped and missed oportunities
reed didn't take one home B)

Smith didn't impress you? Wow. He probably would've completed 60% of his passes had it not been for some inexcusable drops.

how about this what did I post today, Whats our name?!

think about this yes miscues on the oline killed us on back ups but I think its not repition its gelling

however what I likked 500yrds offense and it was mainly our backups on 2nd team doing it

Joe did not miscue looked some rust but not much

would like to see the field with joe next week stretch the feild a bit more

Rice and McGahee look like a tandem now we need names

next we got the D
anyone notice at halftime what the rushing yards for washington were
answer= under 25
passing yards were under well under 100 as well

and if we can tighten the coverage on the pass plays a bit just a bit of awareness training for certain looks we will see picks next game

now special teams gano how'd you miss it

houshka was impressive

and troy my boy even if your on the pine for a bit atleast we know when and if the time comes we got yah and your TEAM oriented

AGAIN - WHATS OUR NAME?!

Thank you!

All this "Smith was player of the game" crap doesn't make sense.

14 for 30 with lots of balls way off - high, low, behind the receiver on slants etc..... He was really 13 for 29 for about 140 (Figurs was clearly out) while Flacco was 9 for 15 for 100 with some guys making drops that they'll catch later in the season.

All in all, I'm happy, but leave the Smith stuff alone. He is a sold backup.

WOW. Okay folks... enough with the jokes.

Figurs was CLEARLY out? They never showed the slow motion replay, first of all. Secondly, to me... it looked like his right foot was CLEARLY still on the ground when he caught the ball BEFORE he took the next step which was out of bounds.

And secondly... you people are just like the commentators on TV were tonight. SO ANTI-TROY, it's funny. They were hating on him within his first 4 passes! His first TWO passes hit the receiver in the hands. The receiver dropped both of them. If anything was clear, it was that!

Look, I'm not against Joe Flacco. But PLEASE stop hating on Troy Smith.

But I guess we'll truly get to see who is better next year, because Troy Smith isn't going to sign an extension with the team if he's not going to be able to play. He's going to be a starter in the league. That is why Ozzie was interested in Vick, because he knows he'll need another QB for next year.

Justin Harper was all over the place
Young guys really stepped up. Especially our deep running backs.
Oher was a beast
Our depth at all of our positions really shined

heckling posters for punctuational usage with no mind for freedom of will alone is being a troll in my book , guess he never read e.e.cummings . I don't talk down say some one is horrible for a post , because its scattered. keep in mind I am tired and I do not take to some one who does not personaly know me telling me how I should write in a forum who is NOT a mod.

I am starting to see a new breed of ravens fan on this forum and I might just move on because of it remember my prior posts not just my last 2

Troy can still use some work but keep in mind that 3-4 of those 16 incompletions were when he was spiking the ball to stop the clock at the end of the first half (those do officially count as incompletions), and Harper dropped 2 passes from Smith that should have been caught. I thought he did pretty good, especially when he got flushed out of the pocket and made the play to get Figurs that 40+ yard reception.

Jayson Foster I think is making a good push after 1 game, especially if we do end up losing Marcus Smith for the season.
