Safari Crashing Issue & 8/11/09 Problem

33 posts in this topic

We wanted to bring to the attention of our users a glitch we recently discovered concerning these message boards. Users who view the boards in Apple's Safari Internet browser may experience browser crashes when viewing certain threads or forums. This seems to happen when the user attempts to load a page that has an avatar or a signature that contains an animation (gif or swf) in it.

Please be mindful of your fellow readers and posters. The animations in your avatars and signatures might be preventing other users from fully participating in our boards. We are unsure if this problem is being caused by a glitch in our board software or in the latest version of Safari. However, we are looking into resolving it. In the meantime, we ask that you remove animated gifs or swfs from your board user accounts.

In addition, we apologize to any users who had trouble logging onto the boards during the late morning/early afternoon on Tuesday, August 11th. There was a mechanical malfunction on the server that hosts the boards. As we worked to move the boards to a new, working server, some users were unable to log on. Luckily, no data was lost and everything appears to be working normally at this point.

I use Safari and it does happen to me every time I come across the Ed_Reed_Pick_Six signature on this forum! Any time I scroll down and I come to his post It will freeze for about 30 seconds.

I do think it's a browser problem as opposed to a site problem though because I have had similar problems with gifs on other sites!

Instead of blocking people you can block signatures-- disable displaying signatures in your user controls: http://boards.baltim...ercp&tab=forums.

There is a thread about it here. I do believe one of the members has had success blocking the signatures

I am not a developer or do I pretend to be but I've been told it's the base platform of the browser. If you shut down the graphics it should solve the issue  Please leave any issues in the Feed Back forum and the mods will be sure to pass them on to the Webmaster.

Apple Users can always use Fire Fox or Opera as a web browser. The sites offer the free downloads. I havent had any problems with the boards on the latest version of Safari for the past month, so it may be something on the boards.

Maybe those people should migrate to IE8 or Firefox then..........Just an idea
Firefox acts up with macbooks. The scrolling is either extremely choppy or goes mach 1, you really have to fine tune the settings to get it to run properly. IE8 runs like cold molasses.

Btw does anyone else has this problem??

I usually go type in "ravens forum" on google to get to the forum, but sometimes instead of the link being linked to the forum, it sometimes say "link is missing" or something of that degree

Oops, I saw the title of this thread and didn't read it because I don't use Safari. Sorry if my signature has been causing problems! Hope the problem is resolved soon so we can use these wicked sigs again soon.

Actually, I just viewed settings and see there's an option where viewing signatures can be turned off. Why don't those who are having trouble just utilise this option in the meantime? I'm assuming the majority of internet browsers and computers are not having this problem.

How far away from resolution is this problem? I don't mean to sound like a loser with what I'm saying here; it's just if the vast majority of people do not have problems then I don't see why they should be penalised.

I mean if you can't view a website coz flash players etc are out of date or your internet doesn't support that, then surely you need to review your computer settings and or internet browser. Thats just an example by the way lol, not saying thats what the problem is here or anything. Just my opinion, with all due respect to everyone affected.

I have a Compaq, I thought Macs were meant to be better with all this stuff?! As for Safari, never even heard of it until now. Use Firefox, its a very accomodating and effective browser.

I would appreciate some input from mods here - am I violating posting rules by maintaining my current signature? Thanks.

Actually many of the video sigs are wayyyyy to big and violate the CoC
Please respect image size limitations and only post images that are appropriate and of interest. Maintaining the size limitations of every image that is posted not only helps the load time of each page of the site, but also reduces the amount of scrolling necessary for members to read and respond to various threads on a page. Acceptable image extensions are: gif, jpeg, jpg, and png. Avatar uploads should not exceed 100px x 100px and 10kb. Signatures should not exceed 550px (width) x 200px (height), nor 200kb. These dimensions are not suggestions; the system will reject all images that are over the size limitations. Once again, please consider that images slow down the site and should not be posted unless absolutely appropriate and necessary.
This whole issue should be resolved next week, no later then Wednesday or Thursday, after a pow wow with the admins and mods. Unless they are huge we are letting them ride until then. It was killing me too and I had to upgrade and change my browser because I need to see the graphics. Yours is at 6442.65 KB (6597271 bytes), and is one of the smaller ones.

Damn, over 6MB? That's like a 4-minute decent-quality song file...

Ok thanks for the help. I admit I'm not the best with dimensions etc and kinda got caught up in the cool mods that were being made. I'm not especially active and I'm going away in a few days so will be offline anyway, apologies to anyone my signature has caused inconvenience to.

Keep up the good work mods and admin.

Sarari uses a completely different subset to the rendering engine, it the platform it was designed on.
