Banning Moving Graphic Signatures

11 posts in this topic

I utilize a MAC at home and a PC at work. Whenever I surf the forums and come across someone's signature with a moving .GIF image it locks up and crashes safari or lags it down EXTREMELY slow. I tried this on three different mac's using safari and it does the same thing. Granted, I can download IE or Firefox for my mac and the problem is solved BUT with 30,000,000 people worldwide using Safari 4.0 this needs to be addressed.

It's to the point now where I press the back button as soon as I recognize someone's forum name who has a moving graphic image in their signature. The fact it crashed my Safari this morning when I had work documents open in Safari (unable to save them to the server) annoyed the hell out of me.

Yep. Same issue. Especially the kid with the Ed Reed return in his sig. I've blocked all his posts. Never crashed though, just slows me down.

Never thought about blocking people, but that Ed Reed one has crashed me a couple times. I'll get the spinning rainbow for a few minutes and have to force quit Safari.

I guess if they don't do anything about this I'll have to go through the forums on my PC and block everyone with a moving signature.

I can't say that I've had this issue before. Occasionally I'd look at a sig and it would be moving really, really slowly, but that's about it.
Have you tried switching to the IP board?

This happened to me once, but since I have gotten my new laptop, the gif banners have been fine.

Yeah i agree with you guys. They take forever to load and are distracting.. If I can get warned cause my signature is 20 pixles too big, then sigs with moving .GIF's should be banned.

I've had a ton of trouble too, I thought it was because I have been traveling and the internet is not as good at home as at the beach. I will add this to the agenda of things to be discussed. Some places I have had to switch to the IP view, I have even changed my browser.

I exchanged PM's with one of the tech guys and he said GIF's do crash Safari and suggested turning off GIF using MY CONTROLS
The member could always disable displaying signatures in their user controls: http://boards.baltimoreravens.com/index.php?app=core&module=usercp&tab=forums

I didn't even know you could do that. Thanks! :D

I don't think that GIFs necessarily need to be banned, but I would suggest a file size limit. Sure, it's hard to cram a GIF into a certain file size without risking quality, but at the same time, it's a bit excessive to show an entire 15-second play in a sig.
