Hall Of Fame Question

6 posts in this topic

Guys as a NFL fan all of my life i cannot for the lif eof me see why special teams players etc are not inducted into the hall of fame ? I know they are not considered "Full time players" but they do make a great impact on every game. X-Factor D. Hall ring a bell ? J. Lewis ? I think they should get the same honors and consideration as any other player on the field.

Were you watching NFL Network last night? :P

As it stands right now, there's only ONE all special teams player in Canton... BUT THE REAL REASON WHY... they only induct 9 NFL players a year to the Hall- and the person inducted has to be retired for a minimum of 5 years. Truth be told, there's so many excellent retired offensive and defensive players on the waiting list for the Hall that's there's not room on a 9 person ballot for a special teams player.

Unless the NFL goes through a 10 year period where there's not an influx of amazing talent retiring... you won't see special team players in the Hall.

There is some amazing talent becoming eligible every year, I can't believe how long it took Art Monk.

Because as someone else already stated...

Elite offensive or defensive players > elite special teamers

Its simply a numbers game. Vinatieri might get first ballot though but there no way some career wedge buster makes it over a Cris Carter etc

Harper is really standing out. I can't wait until preseason.

okay, but say with devin hester that last year was just a fluke for him, and he returns to his first two seasons..... wouldn't you consider him first ballot

I was watching the NFL network special on the top 10 players not in HOF. It was interesting, and they did a bit on special teamers. The opinions vary greatly. There are those who are opposed outright, and those who think that they should have the same consideration....and every opinion in between. My take is that some HOF voters are jokes with personal vendettas.

There are multiple problems with the HOF selection system. I think when some of these old chip-on-my-shoulder voters retire (or die off) we will see changes. Though I am not holding my breath.

Out of curiousity, what criteria must one meet to be a HOF voter? I never knew.
