Kruger'S Role

28 posts in this topic

Has anyone seen where they're lining up Kruger on D? Is he getting the majority of his snaps hybrid-style, like Suggs, or are they focusing him on DE? I ask because I'm curious if 'Thor' is going to see significant playing time this season, even in a back-up role.

I was checking out the 'Videos' section and saw him toss Oher to the ground, and was shocked (I thought Oher would handle Kruger... handily). Any info from the media or from camp?

I think Kruger will turn into this fan favorite, underrated player. Like Haloti Ngata, although Ngata is getting some respect from the league as being one of the best on the D-Line.

He's going to play OLB this season, but I can see him adding another 25-30 pounds and playing DE for us in a few seasons.

From what I've read about this guy, he really reminds me of McCreary. The non-stop motor, going 100% every down until the whistle blows. I saw that video too where he threw Oher to the ground. It'd be nice if he turns out to be the "steal of the second round" from this year's draft!

I have heard a lot of positive things from the media about Kruger. Maybe DE is better for him as he didn't have the fastest 40 time (slower than Suggs). I hope he shines where ever he fits.

i think they said he would play situational pass rush and back up suggs this season. I do see him bulking up and taking up the DE spot on some downs like suggs.

Thanks guys. I was looking up his speed and it's 5.0/40-yd... Not blazing, but if he gets up to 280, then that's great if he keeps the motor he is supposed to have.

At the beginning, he will probably be more of a situational player like Barnes.Imagine Suggs, Barnes and Kruger going after the QB at once...

Kruger will have a lot of speed to make up for to beat out Gooden (4.6) and Barnes a blazing 4.4; Kruger would have to have Suggs like angles and motor, unless his instinct in coverage will make up for his speed, he will likely be run stopper and pressure guy.

So far Kruger has all the components to play like a Raven. Let's see if he can transition well into real game situations.

I don't know why people think he need to gain 20 pounds. I think he is fine were he is it. If he gained 5 to 10 pounds that would be cool also. He is 6-4 265lb's that is not that small. There is a lot of guys who are good at his size that played DE. People think you need to be 280+ to be good on the D-line. Here is a list of players that are around his size some bigger, some smaller, and some the same size.

List of player
Allen, Jared DE 6-6 270
Umenyiora, Osi DE 6-3 261
Tuck, Justin DE 6-5 274
Kiwanuka, Mathias DE 6-5 265
Mathis, Robert DE 6-2 245
Freeney, Dwight DE 6-1 268
Hayward, Reggie DE 6-5 275
Kearse, Jevon DE 6-4 265
Greg Ellis DE 6-6 265
Carter, Andre DE 6-4 253
Brown, Alex DE 6-3 260
Abraham, John DE 6-4 266
Adams, Gaines DE 6-5 260
Berry, Bertrand DE 6-3 254
Little, Leonard DE 6-3 263
Long, Chris DE 6-3 263
Jason Taylor DE 6-5 244
Michael Strahan DE 6-5 255

Those are 4-3 ends, the requirements for a 3-4 end are different. He definitely has the frame to put on 20 pounds without losing significantly amounts of quickness and agility.

I think the Ravens would like him to be Trevor Pryce's successor. For now, I think they'll use him like they do with Barnes, as a situational pass rusher, but once he bulks up, expect him to be there 3-4 DE.

You make an interesting point. Maybe DeCosta wants him to gain weight to be a certain type of linemen. They want Kruger to be the type of DE that can not only go after the QB with quickness and agility but be able to be strong enough to shed his blocker and stop the run. Having undersized DE's are good but they aren't the best at stopping the run (aka colts with a speedy defense). But the point you made is very solid. He can be a successful at the weight he is at.

As Bulldog says it... The 3-4 end is usually a bit bigger than the 4-3 ends (like the ones mentioned above)... I guess that if everything goes acording to plan, Kruger will take over from Pryce in the future... To play left defensive end in our 3-4 he needs to get a little bigger... Which as mentioned by several others, won't be a problem... Till then he's going to be a situational pass rusher, and Suggs' primary back-up...

Most of the Ends mentioned above, would most likely play the DE/OLB hybrid position, like Suggs, if they were in a 3-4 system (unless they would bulk up...lol), so I don't think comparing them says a lot!

I think it is the latter. Oher was able to knock Suggs on his tail so he can't be that bad.
