Merged Future Retirees Threads

25 posts in this topic

Baltimore Ravens All-Pro free safety Ed Reed was activated from the physically unable to perform list [on Friday], but remains off-limits to contact.

Reed is dealing with a nerve impingement of his neck and shoulder, but still intercepted nine passes last season to lead the league.

Reed acknowledged that he has contemplated retirement due to his condition.

"Just to hit on [wide receiver Derrick] Mason, I feel him," Reed said. "He had two surgeries and just with going through other things emotion-wise, it's hard. I've been contemplating sitting out for the last two years and hanging up the cleats and stuff.

"When you start to think about those things, you start to put things in perspective. You start looking for other things to do outside of football."

Who knows, in a year from now or two years from now, Ed Reed could be the next player to surprise us with his retirement... and he hasn't even played for the Titans...

Any thoughts?

Despite his lingering injury, the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year and five-time Pro Bowl selection said he remains committed to playing football.

"I mean I love this game," Reed said.

that's what is also in the article, so I wouldn't worry.

Yeah, his retirement was floating above our heads during the 2008 offseason as well, when his injury first came to the forefront. Whatever decision he makes will be the best one for him, his health and all. I think we all are hoping he can retain that and still play like the Ed Reed we all know and love.

I wouldn't blame him if he wanted to retire tomorrow or next season or in two years or five years. He's had an accomplished career with a r

Ed Reed has to know when to shut it down and when enough is enough. If it is next year or the year after so be it. I just feel honored to have witnessed Ed Reed do a lot of great things on the football field live and on TV. I will never forget sitting in Raven's Stadium in the end zone watching Ed intercept a pass vs the Browns and then take it to the house for a TD. He is one of the greatest and I know when he hanhgs his cleats up, it must mean that he can not take the neck pain anymore. To me Reed's health is the important thing. I hope he does not play until he can not enjoy life outside of football.

Titan players do bring a lot of drama but it's all fun and games at the end of the day...They have just a good shot as we do they are starting off a 13-3 season, however losing to us in the secound round....LOL

i hope he plays forever but he will be 32 at seasons end and has a very serious neck injury. Football is football
He wouldnt want to ruin the rest of his life just to play another season or two. Think about Ed the person not the player.

I love ed and he was the reason i loved the ravens in the first place but sometimes you have to do whats best for you and your family and us fans shouldnt want him to ruin the rest of his life by playing an extra season or two.

Unfortunately its will happen much sooner than later. So enjoy #20 while we have him

I might be a little bit selfish that I don't want Ed Reed to retire, but he is my favorite Raven and has provided more memorable moments for me than any other player we have had. He might not hit like he used to because of his neck problems, but he is a tremendous pass defender and seems to have an uncanny ability to be exactly where he should be. You can see him read a play right before it happens. It will truly be a sad day when he hangs up his cleats.

We successfully moved him from SS to FS, to limit his contact. Hopefully the doctors conjure the risks are low.

Naw, I can see Ed Reed staying in the league for a long time, much like Deion Sanders did. They are pretty much the same type of player, and he's used a lot like Deion was used late in his career. Which is just pretty much as a centerfielder, or in coverage. Ed doesn't help out in run support that much, and shouldn't really be taking that many shots. In fact, in the future, he may just be taken out in run situations and replaced by Nakumura or Zbikowski. Whatever has to be done will be to preserve his career for as long as possible.

I think we've known for awhile now that Reed will probably not have a drawn out career as he has talked about retiring, playing baseball, and/or devoting the majority of his time to charitable causes. The reason Ed continually brings up this topic is because his injury is much, much more serious than a hairline fracture of broken bone.

I don't mind if Reed retires at 34/35, but 32/33 may put him out of HoF consideration.

I think Reed should retire if we win a Super Bowl in the next year or two.

No offense, but that is a terrible comparison.

Deion Sanders may have been a similar player on the field, but he didn't have a life threatening neck injury to deal with. Ed isn't thinking about retiring because he is simply tired, rather that his injury will never fully go away, and can possibly be exacerbated.

if he's taken out in run situations... don't you think teams will start using the run to set up the P.A. on us more often.... I'd keep him on the field, but pretty much tell him to avoid contact if possible

If he gets screwed out of the H.o.F, and Troy Polamalu gets in, I will personally ride down to canton and open up all kinds of whoopass (this isn't dissing polamalu, but the players are almost always compared so I figured I'd throw his name out there)

Personally, i'll miss him when he retires, but I can't be angry with him, its his body... I'd love to see him as a coach... or even as a team motivator, but I'd much rather see him with his health, doing good in the world, than have him crippled for the rest of his life.....

when #20 retires, we will be witnessing the end of a fantastic chapter, of an even greater story

I saw a report on ESPN News last night that said that Reed has wanted to retire each of the past two seasons. I would love to see Reed play 5 more seasons but with the neck/shoulder injury and a seemingly waining desire to play football, I think he could retire in the next two seasons.

Yea, it was tough to watch McCrary and Siragusa go too, but players come in and old players go out. I just try to appreciate the way they played and watch the games of them when I can. You will get excited about the new players when they come in though, so it help you to look forward and appreciate what future Raven's teams will do.

To be blunt, it sucks. I couldn't imagine an offensive line without J.O., but he came and went. Ray will be gone in a few years, and then Reed will be too. The idea of retirement or of players leaving a team has its roots in the basics of life. Nothing lasts forever, and times do indeed change. While we can't imagine the Ravens without Lewis or Reed, that time will come. We can only hope we have leaders to fill their shoes.

We console ourselves with the thought that Hines Ward will probably be retiring, too.

:) ...just kidding, but I'll really be happy to lose his smarmy smirk from my television screen.

Those players were great don't get me wrong but there is a real chance of losing Ray and Ed around the same time (if not the same year). I always assumed when Ray retired we'd still have Ed for a good while but its looking like that may not be the case. Knowing we locked up Suggs long term helps.

I just try not to think about it.
