Why Are Ravens Games Not Broadcast In Full Hd?

18 posts in this topic

This is getting very annoying that seemingly every other team in the NFL is broadcast in Full HD(1080), except the Ravens(720). I am assuming that this either has something to do with the cameras that are being used at the stadium, or WJZ is not sending the whole signal because of bandwidth limitations. Is this driving anyone else totally insane!?

Welcome to the forums!

CBS makes the decision as to what games are in HD.

does that apply to MASN also, or will that be broadcast the same?

thanks fo rthe reply btw

CBS increased its weekly HD games from 2 to 5 this season. Ravens-Browns was obvioulsly the lowest interest game, getting the non-HD broadcast. I would expect all future games to be in HD except possibly SF and the Cleveland rematch.

Next season, all games are required by the NFL to be in HD.

Well they are actually broadcast in 720HD, but not 1080HD. so your saying that next year all nfl game will be required to be broadcast in full 1080 HD?

No, I didn't say anything about 1080HD. I can't comment on 720HD vs. 1080HD because I don't understand the tech jargon. When I watch Ravens games in HD, they all look great.

Correction on my 49rs comment above: that game wil be in HD, along with Bills & Rams and all the night games, per the HD Sports Guide. Of the remaining games, there's a reasonable chance that all but the next Browns game (one of seven broadcast by CBS on Nov 18th) will be in HD.

As to the 2008 comment, see:

According to a snippet at SignOnSanDiego, CBS will reportedly be offering up "five or six games per week this season in high-definition, up from three a year ago." Additionally, the NFL has also declared that "all games must be shown in HD starting in 2008,"

Whatever the original Broadcast is, thats the only way it can be shown, ie if its on cbs in non-hd, it cant be on masn in HD. The game yesterday was broadcast in SD 480, even thought its show on an HD channel its not 720. Here is HD schedule for the ravens as of now:

per http://www.sportsline.com/cbssports/schedules/page/nfl and

http://www.hdsportsguide.com/nfl.php

Sep 30th Baltimore @ Browns (CBS)

Oct 7th Baltimore @ San Francisco, 4:15 p.m. (CBS HD)

Oct 14th Rams @ Baltimore (FOX HD)

oct 21st Baltimore @ Buffalo, 1:00 p.m.(CBS HD)

oct 28th bye

Nov 5th Baltimore @ Steelers MNF (ESPN HD)

Nov 11th Cincinnati @ Baltimore, 4:05 p.m.(CBS HD)

Nov 18th Browns @ Baltimore (CBS not determined)

Nov 25th Baltimore @ Chargers (CBS not determined)

Dec 3rd Pats @ Baltimore (MNF) (ESPN HD)

Dec 9th Colts @ Baltimore (SNF) (NBC HD)

Dec 16th Baltimore @ Dolphins (CBS not determined)

Dec 23rd Baltimore @ Seatle (CBS not determined)

Dec 30th Steelers @ Baltimore (CBS not determined)

So of the next 13 games we have 7 for sure HD, and 6 "maybes". Luckily 3 of the maybes are home games and ill be there!

No games are broadcasted in 1080p yet, it's either 480i, 720p, or 1080i. Trust I'm a A/V geek. The only way to get true HD 1080p is through HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.

Fox 720p

CBS 1080i

NBC 1080i

ESPN 720p

Tweety since you are so well versed in this, why does NBC's feed look so clear in non-HD? I noticed last night, I do not have the locals in HD yet, but NBC's feed looked almost as good as the games I was watching on Sunday Ticket, and much better then the Ravens-Browns game.

The locals aren't provided in HD by DirecTV you mean?

If you have DirecTV do you have HD programming and hardware (STB)?

Not all Sunday Ticket games are HD...

OTA (over the air/antenna) you can recieve HD footage but you have to be about 30 miles to recieve a good connection locals stations.

CBS gives the most bandwidth of the locals, maybe you were watch HD, ED and you just didn't know it.

I have the direct TV DVR box and tuner, where I live I can not get the OTA's in HD very well so I just go with the Direct TV feeds which are not HD for the locals yet. With my Sunday Ticket, I watched the HD feeds in the teens instead of the others. It just seems NBC's football is almost as clear as ESPN HD or the games on Sunday ticket, and CBS looks like garbage to me.

Why aren't you getting your locals in HD from DirecTV? We don't live that far apart and I'm getting them...quite a few of them, in fact. NBC's HD is the BEST!

Because of the PIA of the outside antenna at this point in time. My dish is in a Godawful location and has to be moved to the roof to add the antenna.

Im confused too, you dont need an OTA antenna on the dish anymore, If you getting ESPN HD, you should be getting the Local HD as well. Baltimore has had LOCAL HD via satelite for a year or so now.

But to answer you question if a program is broadcast in 1080hd and then you watch it on sd tv it will look somewhat clearer since its starting out at such high quality and wont lose picture quality as its being retransmitted and converted. ie, if an program is broadcast in 480 and its retransmitted and converted...the signal loss makes it not as clear. Im no expert but i think thats why its clearer.

No, if anything it would lose quality because it must be converted. Technically CBS has the better HD but NBC is a close second. Since you are watch in SD NBC may look better because you station maybe further. Analog signal great looses clarity the further the distance.

Drkraven...call DirecTV and get them to upgrade your dish to a 5LNB. You'll get all of your local channels in HD and you should get all of the new HD channels, too.

I, too, have a problem with the location of my dish and I have some problems with losing some of the HD broadcasts because of a giant oak tree. I don't lose ESPNHD, but ESPN2HD rarely comes in. The people at DirecTV told me that ESPN2HD is on a different satellite than ESPNHD

Yeah the Local HD's and some of the other HD channels come from one of their satelites that sits much lower in the sky (about 27degs elevation) then their other ones (avg about 36degrees elevation). I had DTV come out and said I could get DTV but i couldnt get DTV HD cuz the trees behind my house wouldnt allow it. Their new HD satelite that just went live is at a higher elevation, so i could get those HD's but until they (if ever) switch the local HDs over to the new satelite, im stuck with comcast.
