Re-Sign 2010 Free Agents

14 posts in this topic

Hey Guys. I saw that the Steelers had re-signed Heath Miller to a 6 year deal which I posted about in the Other NFL Teams thread. That got me thinking, the Steelers re-signed like 4 or 5 players this off-season despite being cap tight like us. Despite that, they are making sure that the key components of their team stay together. We should do the same. Yes, we need a big name reciever but is it worth it when we have key players hitting Free Agency in 2010? Take a look and decide whether we should get Marshall now. In Parentheses are what I think they should get)

- LeRon McClain: Do you really want to hurt our 3 Man backfield??(4 Year Deal)

- Jared Gaither: Right now, Brandon Marshall seems good but if Flacco is on his back Marshall is useless. (5-6 Year Deal)

- Marshal Yanda: See Jared Gaither. (5 year Deal)

- Fabian Washington: For once we have great depth at corner, Fabian was a steal for a 4th round draft pick now he is showing it. We need to keep him for the rest of his career. (5 year Deal)

- Dawan Landry: I guess since he is coming off an injury season, this will be a do or die year for him. Landry will either show he is worth an contract extension or he will be gone. (3 Year, unless he shows he can bounce back from his injury and performs well than he should definitly get more)

- Sam Koch: He was the man last year! He was by far the best Punter and was able to give teams a long field. This is a must.... (4 year Deal)

I think those guys are more at value long term wise than Brandon Marshall or any other reciever. I am now officially off the Bring Brandon Marshall to Baltimore Bandwagon.

Note: I know our Recieving core is hitting the open market but Clayton and D-Will should be kept easily which was I didn't list them.

Your forgetting one thing, next year as of now is going to be UNCAPPED :)! Which means we have unlimited money to resign all of ours guys (well as much money as Biscotti is willing to spend, but we all know how great of an owner he is and will gladly pay millions of dollars to have a winning team!).

Oh, but wait...we might have a cap next year!?! Really? Oh, whats that? Were going to have how much free money next year? No I don't believe you? Did you say...30+ million dollars? Wow, that seems like a lot! Oh and were going to have one of the highest freest amounts next year? Must be because were going to have so many players hit the open market. You don't think we can sign our guys to deals with 30 million of free cap space? I think we will be jussst fine especially with Ozzy making great deals.

Oh and we have how much money this season? 11 million if Derrick Mason retires (not including camp cuts). ARE YOU SERIOUS? Wow, what ever are we going to spend that 11+ million on this season? Can't we just save it to add to the 30 next season? We can't...why not? Oh, it doesn't roll over to next season does it? Darn it, I guess Ozzy is just going to spend it this year then. 4 million isn't enough to have during the season, so Ozzy can't go out and get a number one WR because he needs that 11 million just in case someone gets hurt. Oh whats that, Derrick Mason retired and is hurt? Really? Spend the money on a punter.

Or how many real die hard fans would say- Oh We have 11 million dollars in free space, I bet Ozzy is going to spend it all on old, washed up players like Drew Bennet and Joe Horn. Darn we have the worst GM in history.

Ah you guys crack me up.

Then you've got Haloti Ngata, after 2010. The good thing is if we have the uncapped years, none of those guys not even Clayton and Williams will be eligable to be URFA. So, there is hope that we can keep them all but still if we kick out 10 million for whatever reciever, atleast two of those guys are gone.

Yes a no salary cap year may help us, but I believe a new CBA will be in place with some new Rookie Salary cap and that we will have a salary cap for years to come. I'm just thinking this, let's re-sign some of the key 2010 free agents like Gaither and Yanda(to keep our offensive line in tact) first before going for a big name reciever. I'd much rather have Gaither and Yanda locked down for years to come knowing Flacco will have the time to throw to Marshall if we do trade for him. After we at least lock down Gaither and Yanda, maybe Clayton as well than let's see what we have left and go from there. Sam Koch, D-Will and Landry should be easily re-signed next off-season but let's take care of some business now that way we have less players on the open market because I don't want a Marshall trade and a long term deal with him keeping us from locking down Gaither and other key players.

Correct me if Im wrong but isn't Bisciotti one of the wealthiest team owners?

Ngata and Gaither above everyone else, there are absolutely essential.

Yanda, Washington, McClain, Landry etc might get better offers elsewhere. I dont think we will break the bank for any of them uncapped or not.

im just spitballing here but what if players take advantage of the uncapped year and ask for insane amounts of money
Or, what happens when you have people like Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones targeting high-profile free agents with their extremely large wallets? They will be able to buy whomever they want.

yea true

it might be smart to sign some high profile 2010 free agents this year just to save them from mr. jones's wallet

Agreed. That is the major problem with anyone that isnt going to be an UFA. And really, who wants JJ or Dan Snyder giving out any more ridiculous salaries ruining it for everyone else on a previously inconceivable scale?

edit: perhaps I should read ALL the posts before mine :P

But all of our guys will still be RFA, if the uncapped year happens. So, if we tender them high enough, I doubt we will run in to a problem where one of these money bags owners is willing to give up a high draft pick and shell out a bunch of money. The only guy that would happen with is Gaither, and because he is our franchise LT, I think we'd be willing to match it.

but the thing about jerry jones and dan snyder is they appear to have no respect for draft picks... I mean look at what he traded for roy williams (the WR).

I think even if they do get a high enough tender, those two will still try and buy them out, especially mcclain gaither and ngata

just hope that someone like ed reed doesn't hit F.A. any time soon

What you guys don't seem to understand is that these guys aren't all proven veterans. Gaither is a youngster who many claim to have just had a one year wonder. Dan Snyder will be too busy offering all his estates away for proven guys instead of low profile guys like Gaither. I mean, we all know what kind of a gem Gaither is, but for the uninformed owners like Snyder, he will have no clue who he is. Koch could get some big offers, but besides him none of the other guys are really gonna get insane offers. And they can't request it because they don't have stats or leverage to back there demands up.

With 11 million this year, they could resign Gaither, Koch, Landry (actually he could wait since he was injured and no one really knows about him) and Mcclain and still have a few million dollars left. Ok, if we manager to sign all of them and then work out a deal with Yanda, let's say we have 2 million left. Lets say start of the season we have are about 4 million under the cap. We already have most of the big free agents signed for next year, so with that 4 million do we just hold on to it in case someone gets hurt or just resign more players.

If we have our major guys signed, then next year, what do we do with that 30+ million dollars we will have under the cap (if the CBA does come up with a cap. We could have more then that if they decide to up the cap, but this is what it would be if its what it was this year). We could easily sign Clayton, Williams, etc. and still have 28 million.

I say that bringing Marshall to town this year would be a great investment and would leave us with 5 million or so left over this year to resign players or bring some people in if anyone gets injured.

Then with the 30 million you resign players next off season or if there is no cap, give them all extensions.

Biscotti is in the top 5 of richest owners, so he could be competitive. Besides that, just think, Lewis isn't getting any younger and neither is Reed. They both want to win a Superbowl, so the time to win is now.

Our D is stacked, Offense is getting there, Line is set, RBS is set, QBs is set, WRs are getting there, but we just lack a main WR who can take on 2 CBs. With Marshall we would have one of the youngest WR tandems to go along with a great young QBs. Flacco and Smith throwing passes to Marshall (who wants to come here) which allows Clayton to get free again and extend on his rapport with Flacco and then you have Williams who can rotate in at 3. Since he can switch off, he won't have as much pressure on him and therefore reduces the possibility of him getting injured opposed to if he was a number 2 receiver. Then you have Smith, Harper, Wheelright, Riley, Washington all getting turns coming in at 3 4 and 5. We could have a nasty (great) corp of wide outs for YEARS to come to go along with a great QB. I think Ozzy knows this and will make a move this time. My dreams don't lie to me and last night I saw Brandon Marshall eating with a whole slew of the Ravens including Ozzy and the FO lol. I think this will happen now, and mark my word!

Just think about it though, and tell me if you would want these tandems or not? Besides that WR tandem who is one of the youngest/fastest/biggest corp in the league you have one of the youngest/best O-lines in the game, have a good corp of QBs and then have a great set of RBS/FBs. You have a second year guy in Rice who looks like he is going to be come a sleeper, you have one of the best in McGahee and then you have a Strong FB who can pick up those extra yards in McClain.

The FO will think about everything and I think this time it will go through. And to prove my point, it's official the Ravens have opened up talks again with the Broncos according to 2 sources.

Lets be honest, the line isn't set yet. We have a hired gun at centre that we need to replace in coming years and potentially only one decent tackle if Gaither leaves.
