Ravens Football Is Never Pretty Football

47 posts in this topic

Question how many of you were arround for `95 or 96 or 97 reguardless it was never never pretty even 2000/2001 our lambardi year still not pretty how many did we win on point scrapers barely by 1 2 or 3 points . last year and the first year with McNair were the only 2 I can remember where it wasnt so ugly but most of the wins were ugly still last year. sure we would all like to have the perfect team and I mean all of us. to see 50 yard bombs every game to blow out teams but if everyone was perfect in every area how dull would that be. we would never see a win never , all games would end in a stalemate. to be honest I am GLAD we arent perfect in the passing game, I am glad some times our Def botches a play but saves it at the last possible second. This is what makes Football great. a Fellow Raven Fan and I talked he is a MMA fighter here in pa , recently won his first title defense you know that day he was going up against a guy concidered by many in the area one of the perfect fighting specimens but my friend Jon won beat the guy in a 3rd round decision , now what seemed perfect to others was shown not to be, do we want to put on a facade that we are ok actualy if Mason hadn't left we would not have this so I am going to list some things.

1. I will trust in Harbs and Cams Judgement on WRs if they think Clayton and Williams and Harper and the rest can do ok then I will accept it.
2. I won't Make a Snap judgement while down at camp or while watching Preseason games. Because I am not seeing everything.
3. Potential Busts and Stars are Always there. Never look a gift horse in the mouth.
4.Ravens Football is Rarely Pretty too look at, Pretty fun to watch though.
and my final pearl to you guys....
5. if you think the grass is greener by all means no one is stopping you

i've been here since we got the ravens actually before the ravens i was a raider fan(fitting that was our first oppenent) i burned my raider flag at the tailgatre party that day.
yeah our football is never pretty (unless when reed picks a ball off and runs it back)remember when vinny was throwing for 4000 yards but our defense was horrible...that was the jersey i was wearing that day i was a testarverde fan before the ravens but it fit. we were 4-12 that year and didnt get to 8-8 til billik but yeah i remember those days.

And THAT'S why the Ravens only have 1 Superbowl win.

The 2000 season was made special in history, pretty much forever, because it was purely defense. Saying that we should continue with that trend is the same as saying we should look for another rarity SB win in football. Sorry, I'd rather have consistent SB title contentions than the "special" ones.

You DO need a complete team to be considered a great team, or even franchise. The Steelers are very close, if not they're already there. And the Patriots were already there, if not still so. You cant argue with that history.

the patriots d isn't really the greatest but with a stacked offense that can also do great time management then you don't need a great defense....

Didn't say they had a great D, however, they do, or did have a formidable defense. Vrabel the sack master? Yes (thanks to AD, imo), solid defensive line, yes, decent backfield, absolutely. There offense was so stacked that there defense was good enough to make them a COMPLETE team.

It's practically the reverse situation with the Ravens; we need a good offense in order to complement a great defense.

The title of this thread says it all!!

"Ravens Football Is Never Pretty Football, If You Think It's Supposed To Be Look At History"

What? So a team is condemned to play a certain way forever based on the history of their Franchise?

The NFL evolves and each team has to evolve with it! Just because the majority of the Ravens history has been unpretty Smash Mouth defensive football doesn't mean it always will be.

tell that to the steeler or the bears heck tell it to the lions who realy hit the bottom last year went from minor joke every year to laughing stock. its a pattern a mentality its something about the city about the people you know why denver for a long time was a passing team , not just because of elway but because of the altitude they could throw long distances elway at sea level was not as effective at distance. these things shape a team , Baltimore during the winter since you are from wales I will give you a picture , sometimes snow yes , most of the time our area (mid-atlantic) is a Sloppy mess from November - March . this fact is why Pitt Baltimore Cleveland,Cincy all pick the same style , smashmouth we all do it cincy has been a joke they got no like and a rb thats not suited for thier style. the only and I mean only WR that might fair good here is Fitz because he trained under Rice catching Bricks which is what a ball feels like in 18F. you gotta cater to elements. guess I said enough

Smashmouth is what the organization is committed to being right now. If you want pretty football, there are plenty of other teams that play that way and I am sure there is room on the bandwagon.

I agree that at this moment in time that Smash Mouth Football is the style we have and probably will have for a long time and I'm cool with that, but it doesn't mean it won't change! Like the Pats were mentioned who are deemed "Offense happy"! I'm pretty sure they play in bad conditions in the winter.

What has me being from Wales have to do with anything? Even from here I can see the conditions the Ravens play in during the Winter, I don't need you to "give me a picture"!! ;)

only reason I mentioned it was because you can only see stadium condition and we play on what is phrase hybrid turf almost a mixture of Sod and Sythetic (glad we got that rubber crap away) but traditionaly it gets bad weather I remember one game where the pats did play it ended with almost 6 inches of snow on the sidelines by games end both teams went all out run and only screen passing . its the same arround the league in those conditions you play it safe . if you cant see you dont pass.

It's all good, I agree with the points in your initial post! I just don't agree with looking at the past to see how a team should play in the present or the future!! Things change.

Don't get me wrong though I LOVE Smash Mouth Football, it's what attracted me to the Ravens in the first place!!

The Sreelers are one of the greatest franchises in the NFL. They have a total of six Lombardi trophies. The Pats have three. I would say the Pats are the greatest franchise of this decade but the Steelers have a richer history.

Oh, this Steeler loving turns my stomach. lol. But your right. The two greatest statistical offenses of all times, the Pats of 07 and the 98 Vikings (I think it was them), did not win the Superbowl in those seasons.

So? There are plenty of great rushing teams year in and year out. Don't get me wrong, I hate the Steelers but I'm not going to deny what they have accomplished as a franchise.

I think the fact that we have a solid QB makes people want that offensive explosion. Personally, I would rather run it right down someone's throat then throw it over them. I don't mind seeing the Ravens get some WR's but I don't think it's as important as some would make it seem. Even if we wanted to become a air attack, finesse team (shuddering at the thought) how would that work against the steelers twice a year? The Cardinals played Pittsburgh tough, but if they played them twice a year the steeler's D would figure them out and shut them down. The playing conditions, the divisional opponents and the financial focus of our personnel all lean towards smashmouth play.

The Cardinals are not that great of a team. We have a great defense, a pretty good run game (which should be better barring injuries) and if we have a great passing game we will be the proverbial triple threat. The Steelers are not some invincible force which can never be overcome. Give the Ravens come credit. Why not believe that their passing game will learn to pick apart the Steelers D like Peyton Manning does ours?

cards live in the nfc and went 8-8 luck is what they had also kurt warners heart(and jake delholmes int, panthers should have killed them) but hey if an afc team went 8-8 unless it's the west would never make playoffs

The Bengals tried to win the AFC north by being a great passing team. When it came to December and January though, it caught up with them. They got beat up and demoralized at home and they haven't made it back since. If your style of play depends so heavily on the skill positions than your season can end on an injury. Like one to Carson Palmer for instance. If you depend on those big boys in front than you can plug in RB's and keep rolling all the way into the playoffs. The Patriots have a great passing offense! However, once Brady went down they were unable to make the playoffs. I don't want our season to be banked on one player on either side of the ball. That would seem to be the greatest weakeness of the finesse style of play.
