The Training Camp Thread

53 posts in this topic

Alright guys with training camp starting in only a matter of hours for our rookies i thought we should get a thread going to avoid clutter and such. We dont want a thread made about every nice play someone makes lol.

So in here we can discuss anything about Training Camp. To get the ball rolling i would like to name a few people who i think will jump up the depth charts and solidify themselves as a starter or key contributor this year for us. Here is my List

1 - Justin Harper - WR
I think Harper locks up the 3rd receiver duties. Im very high on Marcus Smith but im even more excited about Harper. I think he could be special and he is the type of guy we need for Joe as he is a burner with height and isnt afraid to go over the middle. If he can bulk up a bit and work on his concentrarion i think he could be a great player for us this year. I fully ecpect him to be a matchup nightmare for our corners and i think he will make some amazing cathces aswell

2 - Ray Rice - HB
We all know that Rice will be the starting runningback for TC this year and i honestly dont think there is anything McGahee can do to catch him. Rice has bulked up and looks very thick and he could be a great back for us. He shows tremendous vision when running and he is extremly elusive. And James Farrior and a lot of other players in the league also know how good his stiff arm is. I think thats his most under rated weapon. Rice was a steal when we got him and will prove everyone wrong in TC and be our starting back and run all over KC in week one.

3 - Ernie Wheelwright - WR
Wheelwright dominated in Pre Season last year. Yes i know its pre season but still, I am interested to see what Ernie can do over an entire camp. He has the size to be a great redzone guy and i think he can develop into a Malcolm Floyd type player that Cam likes to use. Of course Ernie wont be starting but i think he locks up his receiving spot and is our 5th receiver this year.

4 - Edgar Jones - TE
Okay, this is the guy i think will have the biggest break out in Training camp. He has extremly good size and is very fast for a tight end. He has very good hands aswell and can makes the leaping catches. He doesnt let mistakes get to his head either and i think he could be our 2nd tight end this year. Jones does everything right as a receiver and if he could block better i think he will start next year. Jones is a great talent and i think he manages to make a name for himself as a mismatch on offense. People where upset Ozzie passed on Jared Cook in the third round. Ozzie made the right call as we have a guy thats better than cook by the name of Edgar Jones, look for him to beast in TC

5 - Lamar Divens - NT
As many of you know i have been praising Divens for a long time. I truly think that he is our NT of the future. Divens posseses a huge frame that is very lower body heavy and he has great leg drive. He is similar to Ngata with his leg strength but ofcourse not on Ngata's level yet. Divens just collapses running lanes and i honestly think that he will be our back up NT and thats saying something becasuse i think Brandon McKinney is a great player and a better player than Justin Bannan. Divens isnt a pass rusher but his ability to collapse running lanes will makes him a great player for us and with Ngata and Divens inside aswell as possibly Gregg no one will run on us. Divens will make Matt Birk cry IMO, i love this kid

6 - Kelly Talavou - NT
Showed great perfomances in Pre Season last year before he got hurt. I think he might squeak in the roster although its doubtful. What i want to happen is to trade Bannan for a mid round pick and keep both Divens and Talavou but thats unlikely. I think Talavou has a solid TC but it wont be enough to make our roster. Look for him to make another teams roster though. I think he could have a very good TC

7 - KJ Gerard - CB
This one is simple. Gerard is a flat out ball hawk and with Ed most likely sitting out TC i expect Nakamura to start and Gerard to play with the second stringers and maybe some snaps with the first unit. He has an amazing knack for getting to the ball and will be gettting interceptions reguarly. I dont think Ozzie could cut a player that will get as many as he will get. I see him making the roster

Alright guys, ive listed a few things to look our for and lets hope for no injuries and a great TC. Im very excited and hope we can have some civlised chats in here lol

Lets get it going!!!!

All McGahee has to do to catch up is tie up his cleats....

Ray Rice didn't prove he could be a starting HB last season and a guy like Maurice Jones Drew, who is much better, still sat behind Fred Taylor.

McGahee will start.

I hope this "one thread" concept works out, but a lot of people get excited when news breaks and start more threads. We'll try to keep merging them, if possible, but we can't always do that.

You're Willis' biggest fan boi. I hope you're right but I just don't see it happening! Rice has put in LOTS of work in the offseason and NEVER takes off snaps when on the field. It's funny how people forget how man Blocking assignments Willis missed last year, a lot of the time he was stinking up the place. Hoepfully, the competition has sparked a fire in McGahee's belly. I really would like to see him return to 07 form.

The question now becomes, how mant more VETS will retire before the first game...LOL.

He sat behind Fred Taylor coz Taylor played 15 game, was healthy, had 1200 yards in and a 5.4 ypc the season before ! Willis didn't get these numbers but i'm also confident he'll be our starter...

It will be interesting for me to see how quickly the Offense can start competing with the defense. If the offense and Joe can come out quick and get into a good rhythme then that will allow the younger WRs and TEs to really step up and show what they can do.

I'll be lookin to see if either Gano or Huschka can seperate themselves in practice, even before the games start. I think it will be Gano, but only time will tell.

I'll be lookin to see just how Cam handles Joe and the offense this year. By all reports Flacco started to take over the offense in OTA, so will Cam continue to give him free range and allow him to attack the defense or will be continue to use the run and quick routes to protect the ball.

I wanna see just how Ray Rice will be used in the offense this year. I don't think he is the number one guy like many are saying, i just think that Willis was still recovering from his injury in OTA. However Ray will have a huge impact on the offense so i look to see more screens and option routes from Rice this year

I really see this years offense being like the SD offense in 06' Rivers first year as starter. The Ravens will still rely on the run but not so much. Last year we didn't really get big plays out of the running game, we just got steady production. I think this year we will have explosive plays out of the running game that will allow the passing game to go down field more.

I wanna see just how Gooden will fit in with the defense. He is a fast hard hitting bring everything on every play type of guy. With him and Landry added to the defense this year i think we could get that pyshicalness back. I'm not sure how coach Matty will run the defense but i'm sure it will be pressure packed.

It will be interesting to see how the guys respond to coach Harbs second training camp. Last year was really a feeling out process, and i don't think the players really started to beleive until we won the first 2 games. This year everyone should be more comfortable with each other and the way things work.

Will the Ravens come out like a team lookin to win one more game then last year. Or will we take the approach that its a new year with new challenges.

Lastly i will be lookin to the return game. I know a lot of people lost interest in this guy after last year but i think a healthy Figurs will get back to his 07' form. I think he is our most explosive returner and Carr would probably be the more effecient. Figurs has to know that his days are numbered with this team and he will have to step up and go to work. With the defense continuing to be dominate, and the offense seemingly getting better the special teams will have to step up and add that spark in tight games.

I hope it will be a good healthy camp. and i camp wait until they take the field vs the Deadskins on the 13th.

Why do you think he needs a pair of cleats? A old pair of house shoes with a hole in the big toe will be enough to get the job done!

Why not just go shoeless like some of the older Kickers?

I'm mainly interested in how the Defense will change/improve, if any, with some of the changes it faced this off-season. Of course the growth of Flacco and the offense will be under the microscope and also our place kicker situation should interest everybody. I think our TE situation and how Smith and Heap will play in this offense together is fun to think about and can't wait to see what Cam has in store for this unique situation. We can only hope for no major injuries and hope that the intensity and want to win with the Team First attitude is back for round 2.

I don't think you could say McGahee can't do anything to catch Rice. McGahee is still bigger than Rice, is very good catching out of the backfield and one of the best pass blockers in the league. I think Rice will make a big impact this year but McGahee can still be key player for this team.

I will be there Friday the 3ed and it will be my very first time going. What do you guys think is more important to a first time person...should I sit at the autograph area or try to split time between watching drills and go to the autograph area when the drills are almost over?

We let Big Sip go because his knee isn't back yet and we need the roster spot for others. He may not be done with the team but unitl he is healthy he'll be out of football IMO. I think the Ravens will give him another shot if he gets healthy. I think we should just move on.

Ravens waiting on Mason's retirement decision and Oher's arrival
Associated Press

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens started training camp Monday without their most productive wide receiver and their first-round draft pick.

Rob Carr / Associated Press
Ravens coach John Harbaugh is facing some issues with his team entering training camp.

Two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Derrick Mason is still contemplating whether to follow through on his plans to retire, and rookie offensive tackle Michael Oher has yet to agree to terms on his first NFL contract.

Day 1:

Ravens start cautiously. Only half of the players at 1st practice are suited up.
-- Jamison Hensley

Coming back from knee surgery, Kelly Gregg continues to move around well. Only wearing a bandage, too. -- Jamison Hensley

No Michael Oher at practice. Ravens have holdout. Also, Dem. Williams and L.J Smith look like they are finally healthy. -- duffstar

Gano missed a 27-yarder but he didn't have his usual holder. Sam Koch isn't here yet. -- Jamison Hensley

Practice ends surprisingly early. -- Jamison Hensley

Greg Mattison: "My No. 1 priority is to get this defense to play to their abilities." -- Jamison Hensley

Ravens PUP list = 66 78 23 96 16 78 73 79 just temporary though. Most should make it back to practice. -- duffstar

McGahee, Yanda, Grubbs, Figurs are on PUP. McGahee could return in a few days. -- Jamison Hensley

Thanks for the original post. Solid. Just an FYI - I read that Cedric Peerman was the first to show for TC. Hopefully this is just a sign of good things to come from this fella.

UPDATE: We signed WR Jayson Foster who is 5-7. This is his fourth team in 2 years!

To make room for Mr. Foster we cut WR Isaiah Williams (Maryland) and waived Lou Saucedo. I thought both of these guys had a lot of potential. I'm surprised the cut Williams though. Wow...
