How much can you do with Torry Holt and Issac Bruce on the field?
Bruce wasnt there last year but still St.Louis offensive line troubles over the past two seasons are well documented. Its mighty hard to have a decent passing attack when your QB is laying on his butt.

Lol, no way! Bennett at 4? Would be nice if Williams and Bennett can stay healthy.
ok how much do you know about physiology . Bonespurs in the heel or ankle can grow for 1-3 years before seen and cause a person pain without being found. williams has been injured on going he had the spurs removed in december. so quit saying if he can , if he will , think positive 8/10 bonespur removals go fine and with in 7-9 months there is no sign they were ever there aside from a scar.

so no more of this if , if if's and buts were candy and nuts we would all be willy wonka.

I don't know much physiology, perhaps I should apologise? You can make your point without sound arrogant or being a tosser. What has he done to give us faith he will be healthy? Hasn't managed it yet.

I think everybody wants to be optimistic about Williams but the guy has ended the season early two years in a row. In 07, he had that high ankle sprain and then last year he had something else wrong with his ankle. They are not as major as the injuries that guys like Gregg and Landry are coming back from but when a guy as young as Williams goes down two years in a row, you have to wonder about his durability. Hell, people around here give Heap hell for ending the season early the same amount of years and he's been around 8 years not 3.

I like this signing. If Bennett CAN stay healthy, thats another great red zone target to add to Heap/LJ. Bennett was injured last season and may not have the best health history...but what if he DOES stay healthy and produces this season the way that he has in the past? It could give us a very potent offense.

Okay, not sure how many threads we're going to have about this, but as I stated in the other, He's no #1 but if D. Mason comes back, you guys will be in great shape.

I am so sick of this "he's no number 1" crap. What the hell is a #1 reciever? Depending on your definition the Ravens have NEVER had one, not even Mason. If the guy catchs the football, moves the chains, and we win, I frankly could care less whether he is a "#1 reciever" or not.

Solid signing... he should compete with Clayton for the #1 job, should Mason not return.
Well if nothing else we have added size to our receiving corps and I think its a nice mix, and potentially a good unit. A VERY good unit if Mason returns.

We now have three receivers at least 6'2 and over in D Will, Bennett, and Washington that will probably make the team. Clayton is short but speedy and Marcus Smith has a Boldin type frame, and by all accounts, had improved dramatically so far. I love the idea of being able to stretch the field with D Will and Bennett and give Flacco some real size to throw to.

Watch some of his game film. Its easy to see the Flacco - Bennett end zone connection that could develop.

If we run a two TE set in the end zone with Heap and Smith, and have Bennett and Washington out there that ends up being...

6'5, 6'3, 6'3, 6'5

Think about that.

He really did not do a thing in St Louis! I am just not sold on this guy. He was just plain awful in the red-zone. Plus did show any real aggressiveness for the ball. Unless he has a big change. I don't see him adding anything to this team

I's not like SL as a great offensive power.

Our forum is just so superior to theirs that they have to come here for a decent discussion. :)

This should be a decent signing. I think we need to cancel out his years in St.Louis, because they had no offense unless it was Steven Jackson.... oh wait he never could do anything because of no offensive line. Bulger is not a great QB, Bennett if he starts could do some damage with Joe has the QB. 2 Things I like about this signing though....

1. It's a 1 year deal- This paves the way for us to have him for this season than go draft a WR in 2010. Or Pick up a high profile WR in the Free Agency.

2) He can help our Young Recievers "Step Up"- Ever since Mason retired we either have had threads about trading for this reciever or picking up this reciever. If Mason comes back there is no doubt Mason will be our # 1, with Clayton as our # 2. Bennett would most likely be competeting with D-Will, Marcus Smith and Kelly Washington for our # 3 spot. If Bennett can do well, that would push Marcus Smith and our other young recievers to do better to take his spot and show that they can out perform Drew.

Here's another way to look at the Bennett signing:

The Ravens have made safe yet smart, low-risk moves all offseason. Instead of drafting an unproven rookie receiver, they draft an offensive tackle to protect their young QB. Instead of overpaying for departing free agents (Bart Scott), they turn to the depth already on the team to fill the void.

Last season was a season of risks; rookie QB starting from Day One, rookie head coach taking the helm, an offensive coordinator getting creative, and a fullback playing tailback. As many risks as the 2008 Ravens took, they were all measured, calculated risks.

Because the team was only one game away from the Super Bowl, why fix what isn't broke? Why take more risks than is necessary? The nucleus of the '08 squad is still intact. Why not build upon that nucleus gradually? Instead of laying everything on the line by giving up a king's ransom for a flashy WR, the team signs an unheralded yet productive player who is low-risk, moderate-reward. If Bennett does nothing, then it only comes at the cost of the veteran minimum. If Bennett is as productive as he was in 2004-2006, then the team reaps all the benefits.

Besides, as neepo pointed out, the Ravens have never had a superstar WR. The Ravens have never really needed a star WR to win games on offense. Why? Because the team's identity is run-first, smashmouth football. Why try to change the team's identity? Because it makes for more exciting highlight reels? Because it makes the offseason more fun? Because it makes it seem as if Ozzie actually made a move? It doesn't matter how we, as fans, feel about this offseason because we're not the ones building this team. A lot of criticism was made last offseason for a lot of moves, from the signing of John Harbaugh over a bigger name, to the drafting of Div. I-AA QB Joe Flacco, to the lack of big-name offensive linemen to replace the departing veterans. Didn't everything work out in the end?

Height does NOT matter in the NFL. How high you can jump matters more. You can have a 5'9" receiver than can leap 41" and a 6'4" receiver than only goes for 38". That's the big difference.

Wish it were that simple. If a 5'9" guy and 6'4" guy can both reach the same heights, it would still be better to be the 6'4" guy. Less time hanging in the air jumping for a ball means he can start running downfield sooner (and yeah, that fraction of a second can make a difference). Not only that but the big guy will have a longer reach, and weigh more.

Bennett dealt with multiple injuries the past couple of years. Before that, he was definitely a top-of-the-line free agent and got a big deal from St. Louis. Who knows how he will perform for us? I like him over Kelley Washington, and he could be a good weapon for jump balls with Joe's arm strength.

I've seen guys like Randy Moss, Plaxico Burress, Terrell Owens, and Brandon Marshall win plenty of jump balls due to height and strength. Even Clarence Moore <_< won a couple with us. Height does matter sometimes.

Last time I checked, a 6'4" receiver jumping 38" is higher than a 5'9" receiver jumping 41" in the air.

I seriously think Bennett will move into the 3rd spot behind Mason and CLayton (given Mason comes back) he's a more productive version of Matt Jones sans the drug addiction

I'm not going to do you that favor. You are quick to disrespect.

We have 10 Receivers on the team, I would have rather neglect the position than sign a past prime player to compete against our young guys.
talk about quick to disrespect, you are pretty quick to disrespect Ozzie over this signing

were you even a ravens fan in the 07 season, you talk about neglecting the position, look what happened to our CB's in that season... its never a bad thing to have too much, you can always reduce the #'s

Adam Schefter just reported on Twitter that Bennett retired today after his previous knee injury flared up!
I can't find anything about it anywhere else online.

Anyone heard if this is true??

He was a Titan until 2006. He played in STL the last two seasons. Kevin Curtis, now of the Eagles, is the guy who played behind Bruce and Holt in STL, all those years.
