The Ravens trail both the Bengals and Steelers, who own 5-2 records, by 1 game in the most competitive AFC North. Cleveland trails the pack with a 1-7 mark.

The Ravens’ previous 4-0 preseasons came in 1998, 1999 and 2000, when they went on to win Super Bowl XXXV.

The Ravens earned a 3-0 mark after they won, 17-13, at the Carolina Panthers last Saturday (8/29). Baltimore took a 14-3 halftime lead when both teams played most of their 1st-string units. A national-TV audience will watch when the Baltimore Ravens host the New York Jets next Monday, 8/24, at M&T Bank Stadium. Kickoff for the game, which will be broadcast by ESPN, is 8 p.m. New Jets head coach Rex Ryan returns to Baltimore, where he coordinated the Ravens defense from 2005-08 and was the teams defensive line coach from 1999-2004.

The Ravens opened the preseason impressively, beating the visiting Redskins 23-0 last Thursday (8/13). Along with shutting out Washington and holding its offense to 196 yards, the Ravens produced 500 yards on offense and did not turn the ball over while taking it away from the Skins twice. The Jets were stopped, 23-20, by the Rams at Giants Stadium last Friday. QBs Kellen Clemens and Mark Sanchez combined to complete 7 of 8 passes for 112 yards with no TDs or INTs. New York took a 10-3 2nd quarter lead before liberally substituting.

The 2009 season is about to start, and the Baltimore Ravens cant wait.

You find out so much about your team in the preseason games. As much as we try, we cant simulate games in training camp. We need the competition from another team, head coach John Harbaugh states.

The Ravens, who made the playoffs as a Wild Card entrant in 2008, host the nearby rival Washington Redskins next Thursday, Aug. 13, at M&T Bank Stadium. Game time is 7:30 p.m. There are a few hundred tickets available for the contest, which will sell out. This is the 5th preseason game against the Redskins, who finished 8-8 in 2008 after starting the year with a 6-2 mark. Two years ago (8/25/07) in the preseason, Washington defeated Baltimore at FedEx Field, 13-7, in a game that was stopped in the 3rd quarter because of a thunderstorm.

(The Ravens have defeated the Redskins 3 of the 4 times the 2 teams have met in the regular season. Washingtons lone victory [10-3] came in the Ravens 2000 Super Bowl winning season.)

Also seeing their first action as Ravens are free agents C Matt Birk and CB Domonique Foxworth. G Marshal Yanda and NT Kelly Gregg, both injured in 2008, are back and ready to play.
