So glad he's back. With the depth we have at OLB, we can ease Suggs back into things. At least for the early part of the season, he should only come in on passing downs, the only thing is Suggs is just as good of a run defender as he is a pass rusher. We seen Thursday that the rookies/young guys can get to the QB, but I don't yet know how good they are at defending the run, so Suggs may have to come in more if they struggle, but other than that our depth should really help Suggs AND Doom out this year.
I hope these guys can hurry up and come back from these injuries. At least their having them in camp and not in the regular season. But I tell you one thing, Campanaro's chances of making the team decrease each day he doesn't come to practice and Butler does. Thursday he showed that he can be relied upon to make tough catches and move the chains. I think Campanaro has a bigger upside and more natural talent. But Butler has strong hands, stays healthy, and fights for yards. I hope Young is all good because I think he will work his way to being a starter at some point in the season because he's looked very sharp. Perriman NEEDS to come back by the 3rd preseason game or he can kiss his chances of being a starter goodbye. In my eyes he's the #4 receiver. He has done absolutely nothing since we drafted him, he has no chemistry whatsoever with Joe, he hasn't been running, and has yet to go up against other teams players.

projected 53 man roster after first pre-season game
2 things good 2 things bad.
* Defensive line continued to dominate. Early on we allowed some conversions on 4&1 but the panthers didn't have any runs over 10 yards, we crashed the backfield numerous times, and they couldn't run in the red zone.
* Pass-rush looked great. Carter, Correa, Smith, and Judon were constantly getting pressure on the QB
* Secondary still needs work. It was surprising to me to see Powers struggle, I thought he was the interception machine in camp and did good, but now there's reports that he hasn't been having a great camp and he played weak last night.
* O line needs to provide better running lanes. I think too many times West and Dixon had to rely on pure athleticism and will power to make something out of nothing. Pass block was good, but run blocking could've been better
Lots of stuff for the Ravens to work on. The secondary is still a concern to me at CB. Powers got owned, twice receivers had a couple steps on Jimmy, Wright had a height disadvantage on the TD, but his technique was solid. Of course defense was playing vanilla without some starters so perhaps it seemed worse than it was. Backups looked solid this year so far :) GO RAVENS! 25
I think the most important thing is that we seen we have much better depth this year
How come nobody is mentioning Josh Johnson. If Mallet was solid, then Johnson was "solider." Mallet threw some lame ducks and overthrew some guys, underthrew some others. Josh Johnson was dropping the ball into guys perfectly in stride most of the night and only one bad miss I saw was the short hop to Clay.
The O-line was a bit underwhelming. Stanley did a good job and I realize Yanda wasn't in there, but Ducasse and Wesley looked pretty bad at RG and the line got pushed back often, didn't open up many running lanes. They protected the QB's pretty well though so that's a plus.
Arrington and Powers had rough nights. Arrington because he was simply out of position all the time and Powers because he was falling down. I noticed that even though Jimmy Smith wasn't in the game long, he was in long enough to be beaten on a pass that should have been a TD if it wasn't thrown so poorly. I thought the safeties did a pretty good job overall. Elam missed a tackle on a play where he crashed down on an outside run, but he stopped the play's momentum and somebody else was able to clean up the tackle.
Yea most the time the backs just used their skill and athleticism to make something out of nothing. Pass protection a B+ run blocking a C-
2 thoughts. kyle arrington still cant cover. Cam was picking on him with ease. I cringe everytime i see him on the field. Number 2, sharece wright is not a starting corner, i dont know what the coaching staff sees in him and i couldnt care less about him and jimmy smiths relationship the guy simply cant play.
I think the 2nd half of 2015 proved that he can play pretty well.
Wright was put up against guys way bigger than him and not once were they wide open. even though the receivers caught passes against him he almost always had good coverage on them and forced them to make a tough catch.
West had 2.8 yards per carry. Allen had 1 yard per carry. Dixon had 4.8 yards per carry. Since when is 2.8YPC and 1YPC stealing the show? I was not impressed one bit with the performance we put forward. If the Panther starters would have played the entire game we would have got creamed by 35. Its only the first preseason game (don't mean to be a debbie downer) but everything
i have seen and read indicates we are a 7-9 non-playoff team. Hope it doesn't come to fruition but last year I had the same feeling and predicted we would finish 5-11 or 6-10 at best. Which is exactly were we finished. If all you look at is stats then Ryan Mallet ran for 6.5 yds a carry, why didn't we just let him run all night? You have to take into consideration when those yards were made, what were the downs, what were the situations, what was the ball location? Its hard to run for 20 yards when 1 yard gets you into the endzone. That happened twice to West yesterday. And on short yardage, the runner is attempting to get a first down on an obvious run down so the defense stacks the box. Getting 2 yards and a first down is highly successful in that instance. And how would the Panthers starters have scored 35 points based on their production because when Cam was in they only scored 3 points? I would say I am happy that Ryan Mallett played almost dead even with MVP Cam Newton. And I am happy that our young guys were able to get the stops they needed in crucial points in the game to allow us to secure the victory. Last year they could not do that. Anyone who is not tickled with the running game, Waller, Butler, the young defensive guys and our secondary, are looking for reasons to whine. YES, our secondary, because I saw passes blocked last night and we didn't even get close to passes last year. So are they perfect? No, are they vastly improved from last year? Absolutely and well on the way to a very good season
Thank you for this post. I think last season's record has some fans uptight and nervous, but I seen a lot of good things last night.
QB stats can be so, so misleading and unfair at times... you throw a perfect pass, but the target fails to catch it - it's an INT on your resumé... on the other hand, you throw a 1-yard screen which the target magically turns into a 50-yard TD - you get a 50-yard TD on your resumé...
It's called the Andy Dalton effect
LOL exactly he is so overrated
I agree PR is the position I am most interested to see change next week. Everyone seemed to have their issues. Reynolds got hit but he also wasn't set the best to catch the ball in the first place. I'm hoping he bounces back from that.
But at KR I know that Harbs stressed wanting a running back there and Dixon on his one return didn't get that far (I think to the 27 or something like that) but he did show off his explosiveness and speed. I want to see him return again next week.
Yeah Im not so sure how I feel about putting west or Dixon in that position though. They are greatly needed at rb and not only does that take some energy out of them but puts them at far greater risk for injury. The kickoff return is one of if not the most dangerous play which is why there are actually discussions about doing away with it completely. I just would feel far more comfortable with a guy like tavon young or Campanaro out there. Which is what they may end up doing anyway- I get they are just trying things out- but it'd be a damn shame to lose Dixon for the year due to a injury in preseason and cost him a year of development when we could've easily avoided it and thrown somebody else back there. Most of the time it doesn't get ran back anyway- so just give me somebody that can catch. And actually since they moved the touchback out to the 25 yard line kickers will be trying to dare them to take the ball out. I'm just not a big fan of putting rookies at the KR/ PR position, esp when that's not even there speciality and they have another primary position. Interested to know how everybody else feels about this.
I did love seeing Levine at the linebacker position. He almost pulled in a nice pick.. I think he could potentially really excel there.
The return man position is definitely up in the air. First and foremost we need guys to catch the ball. I hope someone emerges tho b/c we haven't had a good returner since JJ left. I also think moving Levine to LB was a success, he was constantly around the football. I also think Orr edged out Correa at MLB last night. There were times when he was pass-rushing that a spin or some type of countermove coulda been used to help finish the job, but he was constantly getting pressure and probably was just so eager to get a sack he didn't necessarily think about technique
Not a single word about Matt judon arguably the most dominant defensive player of the second half - kid was BALLING!!
Yeah he did have a good showing along with carter. One guy I didn't see at all was Victor Ochi. I was pulling for the kid to be probably the lone udfa to make the team. Never even saw him. Also where was kendrick lewis? Did he even suit up last night?
I don't think he did
My 5 thoughts
1) The ravens emphasized pass-rush this offseason and it showed. Guys were getting after the QB all night, causing a strip sack, other sacks, and rushed throws. If the panthers QB wasn't so athletic and fast he would've been sacked at least 3 times.
2) Run game greatly improved. Even though we stuck to a simple playbook tonight and had a limited number of weapons, it was clear that running the ball is definitely a priority this season. I think we ran the ball efficiently and effectively.
3) Defense tightened up in the red zone. Even thought the Panthers threaten to score often, they were held to just one TD and keeping teams out the end zone is always a must.
4) Better discipline. Last season we constantly shot ourselves in the foot with repeated dumb and careless penalties, but tonight I think we were only penalized 3 times with one questionable PI call.
5) Secondary still needs some work. Cam moved down the field easily the first series, and panthers receivers were catching passes across the middle frequently. we also gave up a few 3&longs. I will say that we often did have good coverage on guys, but just wasn't able to make the play. Another emphasis this offseason was on turnovers, so there can't be any "almost had it's," if in position we need to get an interception or break up the pass but we need to make sure we capitalize on opportunities and when we have tight coverage.
Look forward to next week and hopefully we'll have Chris Moore, Campanro, and Perriman on the field.
I have to disagree with Eisenberg on the RB situation. I watched the game at a bar near the stadium and during the game many people including me said that Kennith Dixon looks ready and Allen & West are mediocre at best. First of all good RB's dont run East & West.
Maybe on some plays you thought Dixon was West. West had 2 touchdowns and I believe more yards. West was a beast out there tonight so I have no idea what ur talkin about. Also the only time I seen any of the RB's do anything except run downhill was When West had to re-route and run to the right when the running lanes collapsed and he was about to run into a wall of defenders for a 5 yard loss. Yea good RB's do what they have to do to make the play. He scored a TD so if a back needs to go East/West to get out of trouble and extend the play then that's what he'll do.
The 5 things I'm looking for
1) A largely improved running game. It's been the tightest position battle in camp thus far and I hope West and Dixon carry their momentum into the game.
2) An improved pass-rush. We stocked up on pass-rushers during the draft, and with Suggs and Doom out, all the young guys will get plenty of reps to show what they got, and who will help take the pressure off them.
3) Ronnie Stanley. IDK if he's playing or not but if he is, I will definitely be focusing on how well he handles the left side.
4) How well the secondary has shaped up this offseason. At the end of the season last year, the secondary was trending up and they played a lot better. We stocked up this offseason with the additions of Weddle, Powers, Young, and Canady, and Webb's move to safety, so I hope we get to see a mean ball hawking secondary on the field.
5) Kamalei Correa. Correa has had a fantastic camp thus far. He's got a high motor, he's edgy and versatile and I hope he can continue his streak of impressive play and continue to grow his confidence.
We're pretty much fully healthy on defense with the exception of Suggs and Doom, and Suggs is supposedly returning soon. But on offense guys just can't get it together. The 2 player im most worried about are Chris Moore and Campanaro. Everyday Perriman isn't practicing I feel more disappointed, and the more I feel he won't be ready week 1, which leaves Wallace as our only deep threat so we really need Moore back. And Campanaro just need to show he's worth a roster spot. I'm tire od him having 2 good practices in a row and then sitting out with a 'strain' or hamstring injury for 2 weeks. He needs to come back immediately
Suggs is hungry to get back and I believe Harbs when he says that. As for SSS, I hope he's ready week 1, but if he's not if campanaro can ever stay healthy he's a good replacement. Now for Perriman, as I've said on here before, im done talking about him. On one hand he should be brought back the latest bc he suffered his injury the latest, but on the other hand I feel he's too young and his injury was too minor for him to be taking this long coming back. I've sprained my knee before it don't take that damn long. HE ABSOLUTELY NEEDS THE REPS and he's wasting precious time. As far as I'm concerned he doesn't even play on the team. I hope we draft a premier WR next year b/c Perriman isn't the answer.
Good news on Stanley, I hope Campanaro and Moore return to practice soon
I put money on it that Moore get's more playing time this season than Perriman
It is what it is. We all know he's talented, coach and the whole team knows he's talented, but the best ability is availability and if he's not on the field and is always hurt then the best place for him to be is the PS. We need guys who we can count on, and if we can't count on him then he can't be on the team.
I'm not worried we have a bunch of DE/OLB on the team, and honestly i think OCHI and JUDON are both better anyway. But regardless, I hope he heals well and gets healthy soon.
He's become one of my favorite guys on the team. He has reliable hands, he's strong, he gets open, and he's always there when you need him.
Kamar will start unless Perriman somehow begins to dominate.
agreed
He was one of the least impressive guys at camp and was getting outplayed by udfa victor ochi but nonetheless he had a ton of potential. He was just extremely raw and this will set back his development. Don't wanna see anybody getting injured but I must say I'm relieved it wasn't KC
I know what you mean, it sucks when anybody on the team gets injured, but it does bring some relief when it's not a starter, or a star player, or an impressive player who projects to start like Correa.
We’ll have a good offense but I really want our defense to play like the Ravens of old. I think I’m hopeful but we’ll see.
Correra might actually be one of those dogs we used to have. Relentless.
Agreed, Correa has been a beast in camp and he has an edge

We all know how nice he could be if he stayed on the field, but I can't help but to not be too optimistic at the fact he returned to practice today. It's great he's back, but he'll probably just 'tweak' something next week. I really do hope i'm wrong though, he could make a big impact on the team... but.... it's always a what if with him
