Unitas didn't like the name "Ravens" because it had nothing to do with football, but wanted to name the team "Mustangs". Am I missing something? What does a Mustang have to do with football?

Since they couldn't get the name "Colts" back, Mustangs is another name for a Colt.  I see the connection.

That's actually not true. A Mustang is a type of horse, and a colt is a young horse, but that's not even the point. Neither have anything to do with football, and if it's because of the similarity to "Colts", then it sounds like a cheap knockoff.

name a mascot in the NFL that has to do with football.

I wouldn't be so quick to name him the starter.

Why not?  As of now he is

I am hoping one of the young guys can beat him out. On paper Maxx and Gilmore possess much better measurable than Watson has. I understand that is just on paper and you can't really quantify a veterans savy but I hope one of those guys can step up.  And you are right as of right now Watson is the starter.  Its probably just wishful thinking.

  3. i was just looking at the 2010 draft and I just got remembered how that draft set us back. The patriots traded their pick to dallas right before us and they picked dez in the 1st. In the 2nd the pats picked gronk right before us, then in the 3rd the pats picked aaron hernandez right before us forcing us to go with dennis pitta. if That draft goes our way and we land one of those players we would be a dynasty instead of just a playoff team. I hope ozzie doesnt screw this up

The Ravens didn't have Gronk on their board because of injury concerns.

If Jack is gone, i think we could trade down and Raglan, or Lawson who could play with his hand in the dirt or standing up....we pick high enough in all the rounds to pick a solid OT to groom, as i think we are committed with Monroe..regardless it will be fun to watch how it plays out....so many scenarios...

Im not too high on Raglan. The guy is a huge liability in coverage.

I agree. Our high draft picks especially have been bust more or less except CJ. Elam, Arthur Brown and even Courtney Upshaw. Yes, we have had some good 3&4th rounders that have produced like Brandon Williams but all in all you should expect your 1st & 2nd round picks to produce right away and that has not been the case the last few years. Makes you wonder what has happened to the scouting department? Then you wonder how the Steelers consistently find good receivers in lower rounds and we can't find 1.

Also need to consider where we selected those players. Historically, the later you pick, the less likely the player is to pan out.

Steelers are great at drafting receivers...not so great all the time at other positions. Their secondary is arguably weaker than ours and hasn't been good for years.

They've drafted nine defensive backs in the last five years and I'd argue not one of them could start for this team right now.

Tomlin was a WR coach, knows what to look for and personally goes to scouting sessions and runs the drills himself. Look at what he does he knows what fits into his team. If you want to improve drafting WR study what Tomlin does. This year or best chance is going after Kolby Listenbee in the fourth round. Yes we are picking high but he won't last. And he might be taken by NE with one of their 3rd round comp picks. KL is Raven tough and has unteachable speed.

im not sure where you come up with this stuff. Tomlin coached WR for one year. It was his first year of coaching experience at the Virginia Military Institute. After that he was a DBs coach for multiple teams. He then became a Defensive Coordinator. The Steelers have had luck drafting receivers way before Tomlin coached there.

  6. You guys assuming a rookie will just come in and take Upshaws place smh. Think about injury, production, experience, etc. Upshaw wasn't the best LB, but he was our most durable. I wouldn't be dissapointed if we had solid depth, but as of right now, idk who they expect to replace him with. It isn;t like our D was stacked with stellar LB's like it was years ago.

Z smith was surprisingly good against the run last year (he was better against the run than the pass). And yes it is possible for a rookie to come in and take over Upshaws role. I mean Upshaw started his rookie year and that year was his most productive year as Raven. That was Upshaws problem. His play leveled off after his rookie year. He came in to training camp overweight multiple times and he never used the offseason to perfect his craft.

If we don't get Jack, resign Upshaw, and move him inside, and AB outside.....

Are you kidding? That would be the worst thing you could do. Upshaw has no speed and no covering ability. He'd make a horrible MLB.

Hate to tell ya ya but MLBers priority is run stopping not pass coverage, as they rarely do cover unless htey sit in a zone for crossing routes....It's the OLBer who have more coverage responsibility covering TE's....mute now as Upshaw is in Atlanta...

And I hate to tell you that, thats not true at all. If the OLB is not rushing the passer on a pass play (they rush most of the time) OLBs usually have the flats. ILBs or S cover the tight end. The OLB may chip the guy but he's not going to cover him down field. Moving Upshaw is not a good idea. The only way he would succeed is if the teams ran straight at him. His lateral quickness is not very good. Im sure he could stuff a hole but he wouldn't be good at scraping over the top in pursuit.  And its moot not mute.

@EdTgeMythicalOne My Goodness!!!!! You act like Uphaw hasn't done anything to help the team out since he been a raven. Rating on the PFF doesn't mean he wasn't a good player. People need to stop using PFF as rating a player because it's very irrelevant. Upshaw was a good player here and you act like he trash. Ozzie didn't want to sign him and that's fine. Hope Z Smith is ready for that role or our run defense gonna struggle leave it at that.

PFF is actually a really reliable and proven way to assess a player. There is a lot of data that goes into those numbers. Its not irrelevant at all.   Courtney's issue was that he never did a whole lot of work in the offseason.  He has shown up overweight to training camp multiple times.  I think if he really worked on it and dropped ten pounds he could have been a decent pass rusher. In my opinion his best year was his rookie season.

O.K. they've got Watson, Gillmore, Williams(who I think is going to break out this year), and Waller as A "project"......and then the Raven's could also take another TE in the draft(remember, best player available is Ozzie's motto!). So, it's goodbye Pitta(thanks for the memories...), and Boyle out the door, probably won't cut him before his suspension is up just in case of injuries, but dude's on some mighty thin ice. JUST SAY NO NICK!!! It's A shame, he seemed like he had A good NFL future. Was he hanging out with Hill? Another good player, can't say NO!

it is highly unlikely that we take another TE in this draft. This class is really weak and over the last two years we have drafted three tight ends. We have already dedicated enough recourses on that position.

Our FO will take "best player available." Watson-older veteran, Gillmore-coming off injury, Williams-unproven 1st year/hoping he will be better, Waller-never played TE/project, Boyle-2nd substance abuse suspension, Pitta-possible career ending injury. I'm not saying our TE position is horrible, but it's not set in stone either. If there's A player out there on draft day that will help us, you take him. Joe Flacco likes his TE dump-offs, so this is always going to be A need position. If Gillmore is re-injured and Williams can't cut it, we're left only with Watson. Raven's run ALOT of 2 TE sets.

well they say they take bpa (thats really just lip service) but its really bpa at a position of need. And like I said there aren't any tight ends in this class that would be worth taking. But lets say we did take one. One of two things would happen. A. He can't beat out anybody on the team and gets cut or B. he beats out Willams, Crockett, or Waller and one of them gets cut. Either way we would be cutting a recent draft pick which really doesn't make sense. All teams say they take best player available but in many cases takin BPA doesn't make sense especially in latter rounds.

Now why would you say that? He is considered by many to be a top 10 prospect.

you're right, it just makes me nervous drafting a RB that high in this day in age.  But hey, if the FO thinks we should take him that high I am really in no position to argue.  They know a lot more about the players than I do.

  12. This move helps Breshad Perriman a lot imo. Mike Wallace is a refined route runner and a speedster. He's worked on his ball catching skills with the Juggs machine as I recall. So, I think bringing in Mike Wallace to mentor and play alongside Perriman is going to benefit Flacco tremendously and keep defenses humble and deep. Imagine the possibilities when the box can't be stacked against the Ravens? Flacco has breathing room, the running game is flourishing and everything on offense clicking! With this addition, I won't rule out the Zeke Elliott pick for the Ravens in the first round... That would really kill defensive coordinators into the poison they choose to drink every snap!

we would have to trade way way back in the draft for the Zeke pick in the first round to makes sense.

It's too late to learn to cover once you are in the NFL. He is what he is at this point and that is not a man cover guy.

Well thats a common misconception.  At ILB its not all about man coverage.  In most situations the ILB job in coverage is to recognize routes and drop into zones.  It is all about positioning and taking away angles.  The ILB doesn't need to move very far in order to be in a position to intercept the ball on intermediate crosses and digs.  In Daryls Smiths first year in Baltimore he had 3 ints and a whopping 18 pass deflections.  As an older guy who isn't as fast as he once was he had to rely on route recognition in order to be in position to jump the routes.  I can assure you the Mosley is a lot faster and more agile than Daryl was when he put up those amazing stats.  He just has to get a better feel for dropping into zones and taking away angles.  Sure every once in a while the ILB takes on the tight end but, in those cases he usually has help over top from a safety.  He will also surely be asked to pick up backs out of the backfield which he may struggle with.  With time and film study he willl undoubtably get better in coverage.  You don't have to run a 4.3 forty to be good at coverage as an ILB.

I don't see how. Ravens have Yanda and Zuttah that's it for Offensive line and who is playing Linebacker positions? Arthur Brown? Mosley can't cover and that's leave Orr, too inexperience. Ravens will be lucky to break 8-8.

mosley can learn to cover, he did a pretty good job of it his rookie year.  Wagner and Monroe are solid tackles
