Love our Ravens and love our Ravens defense. Twice our defense has gotten us to the promised land and we can win if Marty can get Joe's footwork and mechanics back to where Kubiak had them. Why do I say that?
Qadry Ishmael made an interesting point on the TV yesterday (and I played it back a couple times just to be sure I heard this), He said that Kubiak was always on Flacco and made him accountable for his mechanics and follow through. He said when Trestman came and was more laid back and wasn't pushing Joe, Joe slacked off which led to his drop in numbers and horrible mechanics. If you have listened to Marty recently he has been pounding the message "getting back to details" and I believe from what I gathered from what Ishmael said, that Marty is starting to push Joe and starting to make him accountable for his work and work ethic. I hate to think after 9 years and 120 million dollars that Joe needs a babysitter to keep him focused and working hard, but that is what I gathered from what I heard.
No one knows what goes on behind closed doors at the castle, but that certainly explains alot of things including Joe's play with Kubiak here and how it dropped off so much after Kubiak left, even before the injury. It's more than just having him held accountable man. He had no offensive line last year and he's go no offensive line again so far this year. Offense is all based on rhythm and being in sync. When your play calls for a 5 step drop and gives your receivers those 4 seconds to get to the spot on the field and your QB is able to make the drop and make the pass then you will have a successful QB and offense. When you are calling those very same plays that call for a 5 step drop but by the 3rd step your QB has a defender in his face or on his back it's kind of hard to concentrate on footwork when you're scrambling out of the pocket. Give him the same protection he was getting on 2012 post season and see what he can do. Look at Prescott and Ez in Dallas - their OL is a beast making holes like parting of the Red Sea and Prescott has all the time in the world back there. Give the QB some protection!!!!
Bologna! Joe has time more often than not to make a play. In a perfect world, we'd like our QB to have all day to throw but that's not how it goes. He needs to make better decisions because we ALL KNOW that he's NOT going to have 4 seconds every down so have a backup plan for gosh sakes. There are several options, Roll out of the pocket, Step up into the pocket, Run (As he did last Sunday) or throw it away and so on. It may be "Hard to concentrate on footwork when you're scrambling" but that's why he gets paid so well. Figure it out!
Our O line is doing fine, not great but fine. It ain't all on them!
Also, if we ARE calling "5 step drop" plays, that's just asinine on the coaches part and I doubt we're doing that!
The O-line is not doing "fine" they are barely holding it together. And it is not just Joe getting 4 seconds, it is also their inability to open running lanes for the backs. The OP is correct and your inability to acknowledge that the line is failing this year and last betrays you. What really should be asked is when Castillo show be removed. He has been in charge of the line every year they sucked (2013, 2015, 2016), Gary took personal charge of the line and Castillo was "fired by promotion" in 2104 when the run game looked great.
Thanks for the explanation. I think what is confusing is the timing of the whole play.
I've rewatched it several times and the whistles don't blow until after he has already taken out the kicker. It seems strange that they wouldn't be allowed to call roughing the kicker when it happened before the whistles blew the play dead... but I guess the rules don't always make sense.Right and so the issue falls on the officials. Typically when a defensive player is blatantly offsides, they blow the play dead, partially for this very reason... to protect offensive players who stop playing when they hear the whistle.
We see often that they let plays "continue" when a player is offsides, but its typically not anywhere near as blatant as this one was... he was well into the backfield before the ball is even snapped.
The not being able to call roughing the kicker penalty makes sense if you really think about it, because I don't believe they are allowed to call roughing the passer on a play that was blown dead.
So like if its a false start or offsides, the play is blown dead, and a defender still rushes in and slams a QB to the ground, its not roughing the passer... its unnecessary roughness. The penalty is the same in terms of yardage so its typically a moot point, but once the play is blown dead, I don't think the position of the player being hit matters. Its the same penalty for all players, regardless of position.
Thank you.
The line could not open holes for the backs yesterday, and Stanley is showing rust. A better effort, but it's still two rookies on the left side.
IMHO Flacco's play indicates he is injured. He did have a great lookoff on the 2 point conversion. If he gets that going, it will help him out tremendously.
“Do these guys have a legitimate point or are they just bitter old Ravens who never beat Ben in a big game? I lean hard toward the latter.”
Oh, Mr. Joe Starkey... OK, let's go there:
1.) EVERY game is a big game in the NFL;
2.) Especially the Ravens v. Steelers games.
3.) Mr. Starkey, you seem to have forgotten about the playoff game 2 seasons ago... in Pittsburgh... Or even that does not count as a "big game" for you?
Right on Bio! I was thinking the same thing. Plus the Ravens were never Tebow'ed out of the playoffs....
True, but he makes ALOT more if the seats have Raven fans in them.
Why exactly?
I mean I understand that, long term, fans of the home team would stop coming to games if the seats were being overrun by visiting fans. But the team makes the same amount of money on a ticket sale regardless of who the fan is.
In reality, resellers would be part of the problem for this. Ticket brokers and resellers buy individual and season tickets in bulk and then sell them online to literally anybody who has the money to pay for them.
BUT, at the same time, if Ravens fans decided that they were no longer willing to pay reseller prices for the tickets, and visiting fans of better teams would, then that's how you find a stadium full of visiting fans.
I think you are right on Jacket. The only thing might be spending on Ravens gear and things in stadium, but while in my estimation that would be a non-trivial revenue stream, it would hardly account for the majority of revenue for games.
Plus there is this, 80% of ticket sales are split with other owners, the luxury box ticket sales are kept for the team. This is the high source of profit for the owner and why everyone wants a new stadium with as many luxury box seats as possible so they can maximize their own profit relative to the general seating profit (which gets split out and shared).
I wonder if the Ravens are trying to turn Darren Waller into a Matthew Slater type special teams ace type player.
Harbs has continuously praised Matt for his abilities and presence and Belicheck for his smart sense to keep Slater as a special teams captain and a coach on the field. Waller would have to quit smoking weed, but could fill a role there if he is smart enough.
Special Teams is where he can contribute something because it's sure not at TE or WR. Where are all those people who were saying Waller was going to create matchup nightmares?
He might be adjusting to TE right now while excelling on ST (just like he did last year). I do think he looked good in preseason at TE and made good contested catches, however the offense is designed right now for Joe to Dennis at TE, they will need to create more opportunities for Waller at TE if they want him there to see if he has got it or not.
That is why I'm curious about ST because he seems pretty darn good as a gunner right now and that was how Slater started out (Slater was a WR but not great at it). I just have a feeling that Harbs wants a ST captain and field general and Waller has insane build for a speedy ST gunner. I could see them developing him in all aspects of ST, if he proves reliable (no weed smoking).

The Vikings OC (Norv Turner) has just resigned. I think with Norvs success elsewhere.... he may be able to boost our offensive production enough to change that win total prediction?
Beat me to it. I think we should sign him right now as a QB coach or whatever. Get him unless we are going to go after Mike Shanahan as OC [the blog which suggested him as HC is crazy] to completely revamp the system into what Gary started to build, but to include a succession plan for the next OC when MShan is hired as a head coach again. Unless we go that route, we should be pursuing Norv Turner ASAP with a full court press.
I may have to change my mind with this based on listening to a lot of Viks fans comments, just like Bears fans comments on Trestman. They are saying Norv is not West Coast and Shurmer the TE coach will take over and run a west coast system like they ran in the first 5 weeks.
Along with the Norv thing, all fans should look at the Vikings, 5-0 and rolling with crazy predictions of glory and making Bradford look amazing. Then their O-line falls apart and into total shambles and they look terrible and it is making their defense look terrible who during the 5 game winning streak was the best in football.
So Ravens fans, sound like any team you know of? When your QB coming off short healing time for an ACL has his line fall apart, maybe you should be looking at the line and not casting blame to everyone but the line.... Why does Dallas look so good? Best line in football couldn't be a factor in making the rookie QB and rookie RB look great, couldn't it?
Also, note that Kyle Long can't even get out of his stance on MNF and he was brought in to shore up the LT spot when MN's LT was injured. Looks like Ozzie knew what he was doing with that one....

Joe Flacco is killing this team! I'm sorry but it is what it is! Sincerely The Troll
Aaron Rodgers looks the same way Joe looks when he gets half as much as Joe.
Joe had a bad day, but it wasn't his fault either. He didn't call for another 50 pass plays and abandon the run. He also wasn't evaluated for a concussion when he should have been. I am pretty sure it was before the second pick.
It's the O-line. Joe was hit on seven straight plays. The center repeatedly lets defenders hit Joe stratight off the snap, and or steps on his foot straight off the snap. There is no blocking for the run game unless they are holding.
The refs didn't do us any favors but they pretty consistently didn't call any pass interference. They also let players get hit out of bounds.
Brandon Marshal and Sheldon Richardson got into a heated argument. I liked Florio's take above "John Harbaugh is spending the next three days praying no one breaks Geno Smith's jaw before they play the Jets."
I feel bad because I really like Joe and when Troy Smith went down Joe took advantage and introduced all of us to his arm! Well Ryan Mallet mite take advantage as well and introduce us to some versatility in the pocket and more accurate passes because he revived Kamar Aiken last season and he has more starters to work with now! If they open up the field and don't have him throwing into clusters he is gonna wreak havoc on Sunday! If Joe had that Fire like Brady and that Leadership like Big Ben he would be unstoppable but I thought he was more like Aaron Rodgers just quiet and threw strikes! Smh what happened to my Gunslinger? ! I'm sorry Joe but it's time for a change! Joe we still need your support though help Ryan like Dennis Quaid helped Jamie Foxx in Any Given Sunday! Lol LETS GO!
Mallett??? Introduce all of us??? I've been watching the guy from the beginning, when he was throwing interceptions in Houston. We all are very familiar with Mallett. There actually IS a reason he's a backup... But yeah. I guess we'll see.
You fell for PD96. I thought he was a troll earlier this year, but I had to remember to last year when he was constantly calling for Schaub to play. Lol. He just has some "out there" ideas and some which are demonstrably wrong (like Mallet being more moblie than Joe). PD96 is a good fan, just he has some really weird ideas combined with over the top passion and desire to win.
Mallet looks good when he is coached up to the max. I saw it in 2 preseason games in NE (first one terrible, second one they coached him up hard so they could squeeze a little trade value from him and then traded him to former Pats OC Bill Obrien in Texas), and then again against Pitt (when it was all hands on deck helping him, including Schaub).
Mallet has a million dollar arm, but 50 cent head.
"Last week, Defensive Coordinator Dean Pees said, “we tried to teach him maybe too many positions and too much.”"
Guess Dean Pees didn't learn his lesson with Elam and everyone else he did that too as well. "Now Correa is honing in on just one position, and Pees said he saw “big improvement” in him." Just like Elam, but maybe the damage was halted early enough with KC for him to recover.
Mallet needs to start Im sick and tired of hearing it's the O line fault every week! The O line not missing wide open WRs and under and over throwing them as well! The Jets D Line will chew up Joe because he needs the wall of china to be effective! Big ben O line must be bad as ours he hurt! Smh Tyrod running and throwing and his record better than ours! Mobile QBs are the future even brady runs but we got a pocket QB that needs the wall of China! Wow! If Joe starts Sunday I can already here the finger pointing blaming the O line again and again!
Ummm.... Brady doesn't run. There is even a quote from Belichick saying "he [Brady] can't run". The is also a quote from Belichick where he is talking about Joe and said that "he is deceptively athletic, once every game he will run for 10-20 yards on you without you realizing it."
Joe is more mobile than Mallet. Ryan won't do much with the O-line the way it is either, plus the preseason indicates he will consistently toss picks.
Even the anti-Raven commenters realize the Ravens O-line is terrible right now, I'm not sure why you can't seem to understand that.
I'm in favor of starting Mallet if Joe can't perform well due to the injury and giving him two weeks of rest (Bye week next week too) will help him recover to his old self.
I am still on Joe's team, how long did they think he could keep getting hit on almost every pass play before it took its toll.
Too many people discounting this very important fact when they bash Joe.
Yep. Why is rookie Dak Prescott looking so good? Who has the best O-line in the NFL?
Get well soon Joe! This is all they want to hear from me on this issue so yall got it! Took one for the team!
No, I think you should say what you think so you can either be proven right, or wrong. Just because I may disagree with someone (or not) doesn't mean they shouldn't speak.
Flacco not practicing? What is the deal with this??
Reinforces the notion I had that he was hurt in the closing moments of the Giants game and that is why he completely missed Pitta and Wallace late in the game. I don't think he's injured, just really banged up.
Ed-TMO
I've thought he has looked like that at the end of the last three games, but this past game I thought he looked injured much earlier in the game and more so as the game went along. See previous response.
Joe is just so good at disguising his pain that the announcers (and the other team) miss when he is really suffering. It is a good skill to have so people don't target you, but he was getting killed.
One would think people here will now admit the deficiency in the line, or the outrageous amount of pass plays called, but unfortunately it is likely they will just blame Joe for not throwing it sooner or better.
Oh boy, Joe isn't practicing today.
It has to be something serious if that is true. Like you know, the line getting him killed and coming back from an ACL. I've posted already here that he looked a bit gimpy last Sunday. He is just so tough he doesn't show it much. I thought it happened on the first sack, and then he had that one that looked terrible where everyone (looked like it was 10 guys, but it was only like 4 in actuality) was diving at his legs but not flagged.
Please let it be something like a wedding or christening or something, just not that he is hurt.
This offense just doesn't believe in themselves right now and it starts with Joe. They have to find a way to get through their frustrations and play quality, mistake free ball one down at a time. A solid win would go a long way to help them overcome their frustrations and get out of this funk.
I agree with J.E. We need to finish drives and put the ball in the end zone. But, to do that we have to eliminate the penalties, the bad throws and catch the ball. We have to score TD's and not settle for field goals. The best kicker in the league is the one you only need for extra points.
This last game we threw over 40 times and had 0 passing scores. That can't happen if we want to win in today's NFL.
I am mostly in agreement. I think Joe does believe in himself and the offense. If he didn't he wouldn't be taking those deep shots to his guys.
Did you see the stat that the Ravens have thrown the ball the most in the entire NFL this year? It's not even close to the next team. Joe does not call the plays, and he can't check out of everything, he must, must trust his OC and he does. What is needed is that the OC must cal;l more running plays and a lot more to get things back in balance and the passing plays under 41-42 per game maximum. The only exception I can think of to that is if the passing game is working extremely well, but we have not seen that yet.
1 minute ago, Raven1995 said:Perriman is just getting his feet wet, he's played 5 games. I remember back in 2013 people were down on Osemele saying he can't play Right Tackle, hes always hurt, hes got a bad back, well that worked out.
And, Perriman has been under targeted if we want to get him hot.
From Florio at PFT The Ravens rank = "19. Ravens (3-3; No. 13): They’re performing well despite plenty of injuries, but the injuries are doing just enough to keep them from winning."

HaHa! You figured it out! New Ravens sponsors! Maalox, Tums, Milk of magnesia. Don't watch a Ravens game without them!
