either really subtle misdirection here or some really honest opinions but decosta really talked up mike williams and john ross and then kind of downplayed the idea of taking corey davis (lumped in juju as well) - could be that they just dont see davis in the same ball park as williams or they want teams to think they dont think so highly of him

I guess the Ravens are looking for a more dynamic playmaker. I like Davis, but he's not that guy. He's not the guy that can effective attack every level of the defense, like Williams and possibly Ross can.

It does have more value from a pure points perspective. On the other hand it's definitely less expensive for the Eagles to drop 25 spots and maintain a pick rather than giving up 2 in early day 3.

Perhaps, going for more picks rather than climbing up those spots would've given us ammos to trade up on draft day and get a better position in rd2. Picks we could've also simply used to double dip at Corner or Oline for example.

I think the move suggests that we're going to stay put and wait for another good player falling to the 3rd rather than using #74 in a trade up scenario.

Imagine, we trade up in the 1st with say, the Browns (#12, 1200pt) offering #16 (1000pt) and #74 (220pt), so basically our original #99 (104pt) and Jernigan. This is the case that makes the move less sensed and effective.

Finally, if Timmy was a free agent this year he wouldn't have gotten anything better than 6-7 M a year which makes it for a 4th round comp. This year the first comp pick in RD4 is #138 (37pt) and, well, that's much less than what we got by trading up those 25 spots (#74: 220pt-104pt of #99= 116pt).

So, by looking at it from another angle I'm coming to the same @BOLDnPurPnBlacK conclusion. It was a good deal, for both the sides.

One other thing to keep in mind is the free agency spending the Ravens have been doing. If we got a good free agent the year we lost Jernigan, we might not have gotten any comp.

And in general, I think people are deluding themselves if they think we could have gotten a third or fourth straight up for Jernigan. Just moving up nearly a whole round worth of picks was better than what we'd normally get.

  3. My favorite comment on the trade so far, and it's from a Steelers' fan: My only reaction to this is, "dear god what new defensive lineman do they have hiding on their bench now". I don't believe its Carl Davis, but i dont believe they will ever run out.

For years Ravens fans been wanting Ozzie to be more aggressive or even try to trade players while their value is hot or some what  hot and when he finally does it's a problem.

There's two truths to Ravens fans: wanting Ozzie to be aggressive to get a playmaker, and getting strongly attached to inconsistent players while thinking they could be the next big thing. Though usually it's attached to an offensive guy that would totally be great if they just used him more.

I think Kaufusi can replace his production in a pass rush department and that we can load up on quality edge players this draft

Yeah, I think the team likes Kaufusi as a replacement. And we have Henry and Pierce. Not to mention other guys possibly through the draft or UDFA. The Ravens always find more d-linemen to plug holes.

What a dumb move! What a horrendous trade. A player that is very likely to ball out in a contract year was traded for a swapped pick.

Trying to make patriot like deals yet we aren't really getting squat.

I have to disagree. Jernigan was penalty prone and inconsistent as all hell. There's no guarantee he was going to be some stud in his contract year, and no guarantee we were going to get a decent comp pick after he left. This big of a move up in a draft that's loaded at positions we need is a good deal.

In this draft that 3rd round pick has the value of a 2nd round pick. I also think the ravens were fet up with jernigan. He was too inconsistent

    Inconsistent and penalty prone.

Having another pick in the first half of the 3rd round could be pretty big. There's some good players that could still be on the board for that. I'd say the value is possibly better than the 4th comp we may have gotten from him (though that was far from guaranteed).

We may have already had this discussion, but if Lamp could snap and play center would he be worth the 16th pick? I believe he can play a mean guard and an ok tackle. If he can be an effectuve center though he could really have the OL do a 180 and go from mediocre to a cowboys/raiders OL.

I think the Ravens could trade back and get either Lamp or Feeney to be a great franchise center. However, I wouldn't complain about Lamp at 16 if he can play center as well as he plays guard.

I love the underrated value of Lamp. Great pick up. However, I don't get how people think Elflein is still there in the middle of the third. There are just too many teams with needs at center that I cannot see the best, if not, the second best center in the draft still sitting there that late.

I think Elflien could slip into the bottom of the third, but he'd probably be best to get with our second or a trade back in the second.

  10. Got an interesting trade in this one. The Falcons moving up to get Njoku. I hadn't thought of him as good trade bait before, but he definitely could be to a team looking for offensive weapons.

Round 1 Pick 31 (ATL): Dan Feeney, OG, Indiana (B)
Round 2 Pick 15: Adoree' Jackson, CB, Southern California (A)
Round 2 Pick 31 (ATL): Antonio Garcia, OT, Troy (A)
Round 3 Pick 14: Carlos Henderson, WR, Louisiana Tech (B+)
Round 3 Pick 35 (COMP): Isaac Asiata, OG, Utah (B)
Round 4 Pick 16: Amara Darboh, WR, Michigan (A)
Round 5 Pick 15: Eddie Vanderdoes, DT, UCLA (B)
Round 6 Pick 2: Aaron Jones, RB, Texas-El Paso (B)

  11. Lamp and Elflien would be amazing additions to the o-line. I think both can be all pro. I like Anderson as a second round pick, since we need an every down edge guy with Suggs in his final couple years. And I love Switzer as an offensive weapon. The last two picks are decent value picks for their round.

The only iffy one I think is Jake Butt. Not because I don't like the player, but I'd be hesitant to get another TE. Personally, I'd rather use that pick on trying to find a decent RT if any are left, or a DB.

All in all though, I'd be pretty happy with this draft.

Mike Williams is visiting or has visited  the Browns (12), Eagles (14), Ravens (16), and Titans (18).

This, to me, suggests very much that Williams may end up a Raven.

If he's on the board at 16, I think its a no brainer to take him.

  13. If Reddick could be taught to be good in coverage (he really didn't have to do it much in college) then he could turn out to be a great pick. I've warmed up to him as an ILB. Not sure if he's what the Ravens will be looking for at the moment, but I'd be okay with the pick.

Anderson could be a good successor to Suggs. I don't think he'll ever be as good as Suggs but he's capable of being an every down edge that can of stop the run, passrush, and disrupt short passes to his side.

Been a fan of Switzer for awhile, though a lot of boards seem to rate him as a late round pick for some reason. For the other third round pick, I just hope someone works with Witherspoon on his tackling. I'm always wary of DBs that can't tackle well.

I'd rather grab Corey Clement as a 4th round RB, though Hunt is a good choice.

Toth would be a great pick.

Stribling is certainly worth taking a late round flyer on.

I get that but i've never enjoy rich owners getting off not footing the bill for the team. Especially when it was their choice to move the team. Good thing football is a winter sport who in the right mind would ever watch a live game in vegas heat it's awful.

In this case, it's not quite the typical rich owner. Like, 90% of Davis' money is in The Raiders. They're his entire business, really. He could potentially have sold the team or some percentage of the ownership of the team to someone who could invest in the stadium in Oakland, but there's the chance that they'd just want to move the team to a better market with public money anyways.

I think the real solution would be the NFL itself allocating a percent of its profits each year to fixing up stadiums in whatever order. It would really help out the teams in smaller markets and less rich owners.

  15. So, using the Walterfootball board I ended up setting up the Ravens' passrush for the next four or more years. The idea of having Barnett and Watt together with Judon in rotation was just too good to pass up. Along with Josh Jones as a potential all pro safety, this would being one of the best drafts in our defense's history. Adding Kupp, Elflien, and Switzer to the offense could be big for that side too.

ok so here goes another ridiculous disaster by nfl.com

    chad reuter mocked these things...

takk mckinley 8th overall to the panthers

    ravens passing on malik hooker

    malik hooker falling to 17

    jordan willis 21st to detroit

    reuben foster 24th to oakland

    kevin king 26th to seattle

    dalvin cook falling to 27

    josh jones 28 to dallas

    man, what a mock.

I rarely get upset about the Ravens passing on a guy, but that one would piss me off. Passing on a top five (at the ery least a top ten) talent at 16 is insane.

So is he more of a Harris/takk guy meaning he's not only unpolished but also stiff? Or is he more of a Tim williams who shows good iq and instincts and bend?

I'd say he's closer to Williams than to Takk. Not quite on the level as someone like Barnett, but he isn't lacking in the bend department. And he has good instincts against the pass. Though he'll need to be taught proper gap assignment when it comes to run defending. This article was a good look at him: http://billswire.usatoday.com/2017/03/22/bills-2017-nfl-draft-targets-youngstown-state-de-derek-rivers-scouting-report/

I've been hearing a lot of Derek rivers hype. Haven't even watched him yet

Rivers has a ton of good traits to like about him. His athletic ability is backed up by the fact that he plays with good intensity on every snap, and has a good work ethic. But he's very unpolished when it comes to moves beyond the initial burst and first couple hand strikes on the tackle that's trying to block him. Though a lot of that probably comes from that fact that he plays for a small school. if the coaches of a bigger school had been working with him for his college career he'd likely be a lot more polished, and be going in the same range as TJ Watt. You'll need to coach him up, but I wouldn't be surprised if Rivers ends up outplaying edge guys taken ahead of him after a year or two in the NFL.

That's bs, that money should go to more important things in nevada honestly.

Well, in Las Vegas' case, the city lives on tourism. If they actually use that stadium for more than just football and it manages to draw in tourists year round, it could turn out to be a sound investment.

Yea now that they finally have Walters board up you can do a realistic looking Mock.

I don't think the boards were the main issue. Teams in these simulators just stick too hard to their needs and thus do insane reaches. I usually ended up with players ranked in the top 5 on the board still available at 16.

Anyways, here's one using the Walter board. My first choice in the third was a hard one, between Godwin, Josh Jones, and Antonio Garcia. But had to go for a guy that I think would be the highest ceiling for us. If we hadn't of gotten Jefferson, I probably would have gone with Jones instead. The second third round pick was a really easy choice when I saw Tim Williams was still on the board, and ranked in the low hundreds for some reason (character issues, I guess).
