Can't and won't hate on this pick simply due to Jimmy Smith's injury history. That said, you don't want to hear that your newest big investment at cornerback has trouble tracking the ball in the air downfield in basically every scouting report. Especially when you are in a division with Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant, AJ Green (who has single handedly defeated our team deep many times), John Ross, Corey Coleman, amd possibly Josh Gordon...

Exactly. There were much better corner options further down the board.
So we not only missed out them now, but also passed on future All Pros like Lamp and OJ too.

The biggest beef that I have with this pick is not necessarily the guy we selected, but how it's possible he may not step in and start immediately. With Smith, Carr, and Young in the slot, we would be set for one year, then could move on to a better corner than Carr at the CB2 slot. That's when it looks like Humphrey will make his biggest impact. Humphrey is not ready to start year one, and looks like he will need a redshirt year to really make a difference.

Yet, by that reasoning, we could've selected Allen, Foster, Howard, or hell even Robinson, then selected Washington's Sidney Jones in the second. Jones is a better corner than Humphrey in my mind who will need a redshirt year too. That pairing of an elite player with Jones seems like the smartest thing we could've done.

Our TE group and WR group are both bottom 5 in the league.( don't give me Pitta(not a TE) check down stats, or "potential from TEs that don't hit the field)
If Gilmore would find a way to stay healthy, and we draft Ju Ju both of those rankings can be flipped in a hurry. And they desperately need to be. Not a great start yesterday, let's see what today holds

no but odds are 2 safeties will be on the field on pretty much every play.

well if you have a shut down corner on the other side then you have the luxury to do just that.
not to mention the are very few rookies that became shutdown corners from day 1,  if there are any.
expecting that from a guy just because he got drafted in round 1 is stupid.

jimmy in his rookie season got burned quite a lot deep and it als happend a lot in his 2nd season.
he pretty much fell for any double move and could not recover.
he became a quality corner who did not need much help in year 3.

Corner is 1 of the hardest positions to adapt to coming to the NFL period.

 

 

I definitely do not expect that from Marlon. I expect him to get torched if he plays any 1 on 1 this year. Esp. vs Brown, Green, Ross, Bryant, Coleman. And those are just guys in our division.
And no, I've been a huge fan for about 12 years.
There are 4-6 corners that are better that are still on the board. We could've picked one of them today, while at the same time already having a pro bowl Center, RT, or Guard-Lamp
or an All Pro TE- OJ......but I already know the response there-
"we have a top 10 te group"
Pitta- my sister blocks better. overrated as a receiver, predictable handicap
Gilmore- can't get on the field
Watson- too old and coming off devastating injury
Maxx- A bust and " not strong enough" after his 2nd year in the league..........LOL REALLY?
Boyle- A good back up that was suspended most of the year
Waller-"potential" and everyone knows he's not a TE

I applaud that the Ravens finally wised up and took a CB high in the draft. I see a lot negative posts about the guy here and don't know a thing about him yet. I will say we have to wait until his first game (not mini-camp or training camp where Harbaugh will gush about his practice being the next Deion Sanders). You will know almost immediately in those first couple games if he can really cover or not. Watch him on another team's #1 WR and we'll know what we have then.

I'm clearly one of the negative ones about the pick. I've done a ton of studying, here's my opinion.
We like him because, and he is fast and physical. He has good measurables, and looked good at the underwear olympics. And he went to Bama...yahoo?
I'm bummed because, not only did we leave all pros on the board for this guy, but this corner class is insane. IMO, and a lot of others, there will be better corners coming off the board well more than a full round later.

He doesn't have very good instincts or ball skills, which is a big bummer if you're a corner, especially the number 16 pick, in this class, esp playing at Bama and on that D as long as he did.
But more importantly he gets torched down the field. He panics and doesn't play the ball or wr well when the ball is in the air. And this is the way I feel about that, and a lot of analyst agree. That's kind of an either you have it or you don't sort of thing. Goes along with instincts, it's not really something you can teach.
I sincerely hope he can fix it, and I'm wrong about the pick overall, but that is a bad trait to take up against Brady and Ben. I also think corners like Awuzie, Tabor, King, Wilson, and others will easily be better than him. And they're still on the board. We could've gone for Sidney, cuz we're all set this year with 3 starters.
Nothing to do about it now. We are all hoping I'm wrong.

And yeah, listening to Harbaugh talk about our players and team is Really old at this point. He just says what everyone wants to hear to say the least. I'm hoping to wait til January to hear him talk this Season

Though I liked the thought of Davis falling to us, there is still a risk with all of the top-flight WRs.  Better that we make a safer pick at an enduring position of need, and the #2 overall CB at 16 isn't too bad.  I'm thinking Ozzie has some dirt on both Allen and Foster to let them slide, and he must not have been as impressed with Howard at TE as the rest of the pundits.  I won't ever doubt Ozzie's ability to select the Best Mama Player Available.  That said, tonight will be where we win or lose our 2017 draft.

But even with Marlon being my absolute 100% worst case 1rst round scenario, I still agree with your last sentence. Friday will make or break the draft. If I were the GM, I would do just about everything I could to get more picks today. I honestly think this years 3rd round, will rock the 1rst round from 2013, just as a quick example of this talented class.

Clearly no one is going to be able to agree as to whether or not this was a good pick. I think there is something that we could all agree on here. Im feeling pretty thankful that we didn't Takk (not that i thought there was chance to take him that early). He looked absolutely ridiculous.

I definitely would've like Lamp as our 1 pick rather than Humphrey. It would've been a better strategy and good idea to draft Lamp in the 1st, Sidney Jones (since he doesn't have to play right away) or Desmond King in the 2nd (Desmond King is definitely playmaker at corner that could also contribute at safety and could replace Weddle in the future), Pat Elfein in the 3rd, and so forth. Then just sign Boldin to a one year deal and then find a replacement in 2018 and their you have it. But it didn't go this way. LOL. But some of these ideas could still happen. 

I thought Humphrey was one of the players we would strongly be considering.
There were only 2 players I was really hoping we didn't take at 16, that I though would be a possibility. Cam was # 2. #1 was Marlon. Absolute worst case scenario and then some imo. We'll see.
As incredibly painful as yesterday was, I still somehow stand by what I was think before the draft started.
Friday is more important this Thursday this year. For sure.
I'm REALLY hoping we give up a 2018 pick or two for another pick or 2 today (Friday)

It all started with the Ray Rice incident. Since then, the office begin to take "safe" picks instead of risk to take high character players that could make an immediate impact.

tbh jimmy had the same issues early in his career and ended up well.

Point is that Ozzie excelled in picking GOOD guys in later rounds, Issue is that his picks in first 2 rounds in previous years were made by "playing it safe". And those safe picks were, mostly, a miss.
What is perplexing for me here is that Alabama players, in last few years, didn't show almost anything in pro's (Mosely is an exemption) and still he chooses M. Humphrey...
Ravens needs to find someone that will be a face of franchise (like R. Lewis, E. Reed). I would like to hear what players do come to mind to casual NFL fan when they mention Ravens. Right now this is a group of good players without a leader. Please, try to differentiate between guys leading by example and a leader.

At the very least he would've been a pro bowl Guard or RT for us, probably even a Center if we wanted.

Howard but this is still a great pick. #1 corner on the best defense in college football. I just feel that recent whiffs have made us fail to give these new picks the benefit of the doubt. Plus, the money for us in this drafts are those two third rounders. Let's let the draft finish before assuming the sky is falling.

Especially in this case considering he was a weak point on their defense multiple times, especially in big games vs better players, when it matters. Also, I'm guessing Ozzie would have felt like he wasted two major TE investments if he would have picked O.J. With maxx and Crockett. That's cool and all but May show us that we truly don't draft BPA. 

Crockett wasn't a big investment at all. And he can't stay on the field. Plus Crockett and Howard would be such a nasty 2 te set.
It's not like we'd cut Maxx. But he is just one of his recent high pick busts. And think we traded up for him too. Awesome. That fact that he couldn't even hit the field last year says everything. Some people on here made the excuse that he's not strong enough, yet. That's the saddest excuse I've ever heard on here for an NFL player.
Plus Howard is a straight wrecking ball of a WR too. If we don't add Ju Ju, or some like Zay, our wr core and offense will be SO ugly. Can't even imagine

And there is a chance to make up for it. There is still at least a full round of usual first rounders left. Many ways to do it. Here are a few names I like.

Unfortunately I like all the corners above twice as much as Marlon. There was the best case-worse case article last night, this was beyond worse case. Somehow I'm not surprised though. We should already have Lamp- an all pro Center, Guard, or RT, or Howard, and instant pro bowler and probably all pro. He would've helped the run, pass game, and most importantly, Joe. Or Allen to add to Pierce and BWill on the line. Run dominance and interior pass rush. Instead, we already have 3 good starting corners in place, so now Marlon, a corner that can't cover down the field, the #16 overall pick, is our 4th corner.JEEZ

I would think Lamp, Lawson, Cook, King, and most importantly Ju Ju, have to be serious targets for us tomorrow.
If we get 2 of them that would be sweet. If we get 3 or 4 I'll shut my big mouth ( or fat fingers in this case) and I won't care if Marlon turns out to be as good as Shareece Wright. Seriously. Which he might. Besides Marlon being 12 pounds heavier, their measurables are almost identical. And they have the same cover tendencies and both panic when the ball is in the air.

Cook is another playmaker. We need playmakers. He's bound to go early tomorrow
Wilson, King, Tabor, and Awuzie are Ravens. Now the Steelers are probably going to get one :(

Really though, saying he was the number one corner on the # defense in college means absolutely nothing. Especially in this case considering he was a weak point on their defense multiple times, especially in big games vs better players, when it matters. He got torched down the field in multiple big games. Panics when the ball is in the air.......bad instincts and ball skills...........NOT COOL
