You should've taken the steelers. Maybe that would've been the last straw to push Ben into retirement lol
With round 6 pick 8, the Houston Texans select:
Colin Buchanan, OL
University of Miami (Ohio)
With the 4th pick in the 6th round, the Houston Texans select:

James Onwualu, LB
Notre Dame
With the 9th pick in the 5th round, the Texans select:
Joe Mathis, OLB, Washington
Elijah Lee is a good linebacker in coverage and athleticism, but his tackling is so soft I don't expect the Ravens to pick him.

Really? I saw one or two mocks projecting him to go in the 4th. I like his tenacity and aggressive play. At the worst, I expect him to be a special teams standout. He's a fighter that refuses to quit. The NFL could always use another player like that
Looks like the Boulware pick flew like a lead balloon

He's the epitome of a project, but one of the better qualities about Mahomes is that he's been vocal about recognizing the issues with his technique and stating that he always uses constructive criticism to better his weaknesses. He spoke about Brees specifically at the Combine, stating that he would love the opportunity to sit behind him and pick his brain on a daily basis. It's fair to wonder whether he can control his gunslinger mentality, but I feel like he should be cut some slack due to the fact that he was asked to shoulder the load on an almost astronomical level at times. One of the most mind-numbing numbers with relation to Mahomes is that the Texas Tech defense allowed an average of 40 points per game through their 12 games. In addition, their OL was shoddy, they don't have a single other player projected to be drafted, and their leading rusher amassed 428 yards, which I can't place entirely on the air-raid approach given that DeAndre Washington broke the 1,100 yard mark in his last two seasons there. In almost every game, there were one or two plays wherein he took terrible ill-fated deep throws that were almost intercepted. It's a wonder whether he'll work through that mentality given that his surrounding talent would likely be better and that he won't have to force these throws nearly as often as he did in college. But the raw foundation is there in my eyes. He can make every throw, he looks downfield when he scrambles and he steps up into the pocket when he's pressured from the outside during the throw. He was absolutely worth the gamble at this point. At best, you've secured a future starter after Brees retires. At worst, it's a loss of a late 3rd round selection.
That's very reassuring to hear about Mahomes specifically mentioning Brees at the Combine.
Very intriguing statistics on that Texas Tech team. He definitely did appear to have to singlehandedly keep that team in games at times. It was good to see him succeed in 2016 without his safety net DeAndre Washington as well.
I'm reference to the point about Mahomes having good building blocks, I'm I'm in agreement. I liked what I saw on tape, especially his ability to throw on the run, keeping his eyes downfield as you said, and how most times he makes the correct reads. Yet again, I also saw how at times he'll make those 1-2 "ill-fated throws". That simply won't fly in the NFL, but with time, practice, and the mentorship of Drew Brees perhaps he can make the correct throw more often.
1 hour ago, -Truth- said:I'm surprised that Patrick Mahomes lasted this long. His footwork and tendency to scramble despite a clean pocket will be difficult challenges to overcome. He's a sandlot QB, his accuracy on deep throws is inconsistent, and his floor is as low as his ceiling on high. But with regards to the latter, he arguably has as much upside as any QB in this class. He might have one of the better arms in the league in his first season. I didn't need a QB but I was attempting to trade up for him myself.
I agree fully with all the points you have raised. I think his ceiling is as high or higher than anybody else's, but he also has the biggest chance to bust due to the issues you've highlighted.
That being said, I think being picked by this Texans team is a great setup for Mahomes, because he gets to stay in Texas and he can sit behind a Hall of Fame QB for two years and learn from him.
I think Drew Brees is the perfect mentor for him too, because of his work ethic and meticulous planning. If Mahomes can watch, learn and be teachable, when Brees decides to retire he can hopefully step in and play effectively.

Good move trading up. I can guarantee he wouldn't have been there after pick 25. I agree with you completely

Oh, you're right. I thought it was a 4.68.... my bad. A 4.62 is still a pretty terrible time for a cornerback in today's NFL.
3 minutes ago, BmoreBird22 said:I think the second is where Tabor ultimately goes, but he has such amount of high potential
Hopefully that 4.7 was just a blip on the radar. He appears to be faster on tape. I expected he'd at least crack 4.6
I like Jarrad Davis a lot. He's a great athlete and there is a pretty steep drop off at ILB after him.

Thank you. I would've picked Lawson had you gone with Moton... I think you got fantastic value with that pick. Not too long ago he was being discussed as a potential top 10 prospect. Agreed on the versatility of Moton.

lol. All jokes aside it's a great pick and he reminds me alot of K.O .
Thanks man, I agree completely on that comparison.
The Texans desperately need the OL help too. I like him best at RG, but given the health record of Derek Newton at RT, he may be asked to kick outside.
I would be thrilled if the Ravens got him... I think he'd be a good fit for our power run scheme.

The biggest beef that I have with this pick is not necessarily the guy we selected, but how it's possible he may not step in and start immediately. With Smith, Carr, and Young in the slot, we would be set for one year, then could move on to a better corner than Carr at the CB2 slot. That's when it looks like Humphrey will make his biggest impact. Humphrey is not ready to start year one, and looks like he will need a redshirt year to really make a difference.
Yet, by that reasoning, we could've selected Allen, Foster, Howard, or hell even Robinson, then selected Washington's Sidney Jones in the second. Jones is a better corner than Humphrey in my mind who will need a redshirt year too. That pairing of an elite player with Jones seems like the smartest thing we could've done.
