But think of the savings down the line.  If you think about it, if he's cut, McClain and Koch, doesn't that put us about right were the team thought they would be anyway cap space wise, before the cap was pushed back?

That's a dumb idea since Rice is a veteran, wouldn't save money and would only cost us (so you'd suggest cutting two more players for a total of three just to mitigate the cap hit of one? Glad you aren't a GM), and would cost us a player who was generally really great.

  2. Simple. That money is not guaranteed. Teams can cut that player at any time. Or they can be extended. Like Suggs. Real gms are not just looking at one year or a couple. Ozzie is always plannig years ahead to have this team always competitive. Can't have big contracts all hitting at one time.

You would hope they could try to front load at least one and get in a good practice of it. I cannot understand for the life of me why you would backload a contract for an older player. If they are young and not yet in their primes, I understand. If they're about to be out, I don't understand.

Yeah, let's just cut Ngata since he's in the twilight of his career and we'll save.... $1 million.

That's the point I'm making. It would be really nice if this cap hit was way lower now that he's not playing as well to mitigate the cap hit if we cut him.

I think most GM's would love to front load and follow this idea, but it's hard when you're in a loop of back loading contracts and you have Ngata cap hits because front loading a Torrey Smith contract because it's near impossible

We don't have enough room to front load.  Our big contracts get bigger and bigger as the years go on.

  4. Yeah I'm confused.  I know a lot about the NFL, but I've seriously never heard of Harrison.  How he managed to pull Abraham and a 2nd is beyond me.

Apparently Harrison was the best run stuffing defensive tackle in the NFL, if you go by PFF. Not much as a pass rusher, but really stout again the run. He's also 25 as compared to Abraham being 36

If it is true that his agent wants him designated as a WR for a franchise tag, I say we need to let him walk. If he wanted to be paid like a WR he should have listed himself as a WR and get drafted as one. He isn't a WR, wasn't drafted as one, so why should the Ravens every want to pay him like one?

Yeah, he may have lined up 79 % as a WR, but isn't that up to the play calling? What is up with these agents I don't know. Now, just because JImmy Graham's agent wants him designated as a WR, doesn't mean Pitta should. Production wise, they are miles apart.

We can call him a receiver if he wants to be a slot receiver and make $3, $4 million.

  6. Just heard something interesting on ESPN. Pitta was flexed out into the slot on the majority of his snaps, not out wide. He wants to get paid like a receiver, so let's pay him as a slot receiver. The most highly paid slit receiver was Wes Welker, who made $6 million per year. Boldin is negotiating for $4-$5 million from San Fran.

He's not nearly as productive as those two, so let's pay him the $3-$4 million he deserves as a slot receiver

I agree with that 100%. I absolutely believe, that Flacco's great playoff run had more to do with the OL playing uncharacteristically well (especially for McKinnie), than any receiver Joe was throwing the ball to.

The Ravens OL was so bad last season, that the coaches and FO will have alot of work cut out for them, just to get that unit back to being average. So, there is really no way Pitta should receive a contract, that would make it more difficult for the Ravens to give their 120 million dollar investment (and his knee) proper protection.

It's much easier for the Ravens to find a TE of Pitta's caliber in the draft than a LT, that is as good as Monroe.

I have always maintained 100% that it doesn't matter what receivers you have out there if you are flat on your back or running away one second into the play.

A receiver will break free from coverage if you give him four or five seconds, but a quarterback will rarely make a good throw off his back foot with a linebacker in his chest after one.

  8. The one thing we should be blaming this on is the salary cap not increasing consistently despite record viewership and all the new cable contracts.

In all seriousness, I don't think the Ravens would ever seriously break the bank for Pitta. I think Joe would be much happier if that money was used to sign Monroe and a veteran center to keep him clean (or what ever other pieces we need). Tom Brady usually does fairly well despite a revolving door set of targets. Why? Because he always has tons of time to pass the ball

  9. Pitta is 28 and will be 29 in June. He's coming off a hip injury that could have possibly ended his career. He's had one decent (not great) season as a receiver and offers nothing as a blocker. When does all of this add up to him getting a big pay day? It doesn't to me.

I wonder if it's better for him to move on. Joe's struggles were in part due to the skill of the receivers, but I'd put most of the blame on the offensive line. With Pitta out, it required Joe to look at more options than just Pitta (who Joe seemed to really lock onto in a major way when Pitta came back). He was forced to try to get the ball to Marlon and Tandon, and I think that was really valuable for them. Tandon was actually doing fairly well before Pitta came back and I'm sure Marlon appreciates all the experience he got.

I would still want the Ravens to address tight end with someone like ASJ or Ebron, but I don't think it's a make or break if Pitta doesn't come back, and I think it would do good things for the younger guys.

  10. I've also heard they're considering it.  In the same breath, it was stated they were also considering working out an extension with Ngata to clear some more cap room.  I wouldn't do it personally, but it will be interesting to see over the next few weeks.

Well isn't it possible that it's just a one year extension to try to spread the next two years out over three years?

  11. I think it would be B.S. to have Pitta be tagged as a wide receiver. As I read somewhere, it'd be unfair to teams to have to be like (let's use New Orleans), "Oh, I can't flex Jimmy Graham out wide where he creates a mismatch because that'd be a receiver. Let me keep him inline where he's not as good." That's a load of crap. His official title coming out was tight end and I don't recall him ever saying he was a wide receiver. Same to Pitta.

If they wanted wide receiver money, they should have played that. It's unfair to these teams.

  12. I do not have the fourth round pick, just to clarify. I actually moved it. Plus, I was told that I could trade for a RFA, so I wasn't doing anything without being told first. This was actually a question I had and was told by a member who did this before (Crush) that it was okay for me to do this. I said to him that I would not make the trade unless Rey was exclusively mine.
