These players are literally coached on how to stand in their stance, how to get off, how to run, how to finish with their body. Literally everything is being coached and none of it is anything close to what they'll replicate in football.
No defensive end is running 40 yards up the field in a straight line out of a track stance. Doesn't happen.
Plus, as far as the clock is concerned, it starts on first motion, not when they cross the line to start running, so a 4.9x can be due to his start if he leaned a little or twitched his hand early.
For example, Braxton Miller was like a 4.55, but scouts had him timed on hand clocks closer to a 4.35 and were more inclined to trust their hand clocks than the combine time.
