The Ravens' biggest risk in 2017: what if Joe gets hurt?

There was a time when the Ravens' defense scored points, maybe that was draft intent?

QUOTE 1) Hmmmmm? That's interesting! There were three WRs taken right after our 78th pick by Pick 84. An offensive lineman was taken with pick 85. Wake up and smell the roses. The FO clearly has a bias for drafting defensive players, preferably from Alabama for some unknown reason. Oh, that's right, it is Oz's alma mater. Maybe the FO has plans to start Keenan Reynolds at QB and convert Joe Flacco to a TE! Its a novel idea and who knows? It might just work! Marty will just need to devise a new game plan. Have the newly revamped defense hold our opponents to zero points like the first time we won the SB and allowed only 165 points in 16 games and then bring in Tucker to kick the game-winning FGs from 80 yards 'cause we will never get to the red zone without an offensive line and some reliable WRs and TEs. I do agree with your belief that we can field a competitive team this year and contend in 2018. We are in a serious rebuilding mode, no doubt 'bout it.
QUOTE 2) Everything you have stated is true. We were a much different team when Jimmy Smith was on the field. That being said, the loss of one key player should not have caused the meltdown that occurred when he was absent from the lineup. So, I get it. The Ravens have just invested a bunch on a hunch --- that is, the notion that offense sells tickets but defense wins games. Also, defensive draft picks are more likely to become immediate impact players because defense is a streetcar named desire. What is bothersome is your last statement. It would be indefensible (no pun intended) to argue that next season's defense could be as elite as the defense was in our first SB year. Even with that elite defense, our offense had more weapons than this team currently has and it still had trouble scoring points. Playmakers like Jamaal Lewis, Jermaine Lewis, Shannon Sharpe and Brandon Stokely come to mind, just to name a few. Your post speaks volumes in what you do not say about this year's draft - a conspicuous absence of any early round offensive draft picks. So far, the strategy of the FO,as it relates to offense, has been addition by subtraction, unless you think that the acquisition of Danny Woodhead is a panacea for our offensive woes. Frankly, I don't. We need a dominant center, a right tackle, a dependable deep threat WR, a complementary WR to replace SSS and a chain-moving & blocking TE. And, for goodness sake, get rid of James Hurst in keeping with the addition by subtraction philosophy. Yep, we are in a rebuilding mode and it will take awhile for this team to return to its former shade of purple glory.
PB - spot on, well stated!
The Ravens rebuild starts now, but does not end here. Expect the Ravens to be competitive this season, but short of playoff bound. Expect bigger results in 2018.
John your point is well stated, but an "8 and 8" record is a collar around the Ravens' neck going into this fall 2017 season. How will the Ravens break their pattern of 8-8 level of football? The answer starts at the top with wholesale changes. If you coach the same, you get the same results on the field, no matter who is on the field.
Yeah this isn't even remotely true.
Average = Average; until the owner makes changes at the top, it will be the same ole same ole.

Correct logic, but not probable outcome. The owner needs to make changes at the top or simply sit back and watch mediocrity, at best.

The question remains unanswered.
Draft all DBs, trade for linemen. Done deal.
Not happening. Wallace will lead the team again and set the table for Perriman on the seams.
It must be a Baltimore thing: both the Orioles and Ravens look average for the next year. Hopefully I have miscalculated, but in pro sports anything can happen, right?
The Ravens need a major rethink of their strategic plan. Expect the owner to make move(s) at the top before season starts. Unfortunately, the Ravens have not recovered from the handling of the Ray Rice incident. Suggest making a list of those things the Ravens do well (keep doing them) and a list of those things the Ravens do not do well (eliminate them) and then move personnel, accordingly. Right now without radical changes in their strategy, the Ravens remain third tier.
Lower the prices of beer at the stadium - it is going to be a long season.
New players, same coaching, same story.
How about the "S" word: "Start" fast in the game. How about the "I" word: "Imagination" in play calling? How about the "M" word: "Momentum" in capturing and keeping it on both sides of the football? How about "F" word: "Fans" losing interest football?
Let me make it easier for you to understand, Ross. The "8-8" stigma is code for "Average Team". So, the concern stands: when will the Ravens break the pattern of being "average" in the NFL?

You nailed it, John!
Is it time for OZ to retire with no viable championships insight for the next 10 years? It would be wise to get out on a high note and enjoy retirement. Lots of Raven housekeeping is in order. A good place to start is at the top and work your way through the coaching staff, accordingly. Rebuild the offensive line this year and next, the defensive line the following two years, and lastly work on the defensive backs. Joe will be gone in two years either retired or traded. Between now and the next two years pick up another young strong armed quarterback. The newly formed Ravens will be about the "rush", either rushing the opponent's quarterback or rushing the football. Expect the fan base to erode as TV timeouts make watching games unbearable. The RedZone is saving what is left of NFL entertainment.
Wallace is a playmaker; he'll have a great season in 2017.
Clean house or remain the same; another .500 season is insane.
Game 16: 11-5 record based on August predictions. Sometimes even bad teams find a way to win. Oh well, next year is now. Ravens have some serious house cleaning to do.
Five changes for the Cincinnati game:
1. Joe calls all the plays (at least for the first half)
2. Second half bring in backup QBs for real time play
3. Try a double reverse flea flicker or something fun like a halfback pass
4. Move the DBs into man-to-man, “Beat me if you can,” tight alignment on the receivers
5. Go for all field goal opportunities 67 yards or closer
Bonus: The Ravens are a proud organization: be generous with the footballs and give them to fans in the stadium as often as possible. Come home first class purple!
The Ravens must mix in the new talent for this last game; lots of decisions to make starting on Monday. The Chemistry was not the problem on this team this season. As a unit, they have been stellar on and off the field. It was more about the talent on defense. Expect fresh blood on the field and in the booth in 2017.
