Trestman is the fault for our run game woes resorting to sweeps and outside pitches to get yards. Opponents will start keying in on this. Next entire practice should be dedicated to running the ball inside. full pads day. Bring back the zone stretch!!
Er, what NFL passing record did he almost match this weekend?
Stanley - Jensen - Urschel - Yanda - Wagner versus the Raiders. I think this gives us the lineup for best success right now. Jensen and Urschel could switch up in this scenario.I would put Zuttah in relief of Jensen/Urschel. We need more effective run game blocking. We need a mauler in at LG/C.

He's had 3 full offseasons with the team, and almost 3 full regular seasons, going on his 4th. Its a 4 year career if hes been in the NFL going on his 4th year. I dont know whats inaccurate about that. If youre an 11 year vet youre an 11 year vet whether you missed a season or not. Youre still around the team, in the meeting rooms, studying film, and out at the practice field every day. Youre always learning and improving healthy or not.
Never said Lewis is a known commodity... and if anything only makes the point stronger. They felt more comfortable about Lewis with just one offseason than they did about having seen Jensen for 4 offseasons, and even having seen him play well in regular season games. Likely, because theyve seen him more often than not look like the guy who played poorly for the 3 game stretch last year.
I dont know how this is even a problem. Lewis literally got the job over him. I highly doubt they would do that if Jensen looked better. Theyre not going to put a weaker player on the field just cuz.
And Lewis was asked to play LT, RT, and LG in the offseason and preseason. So no, only 3.
And id suggest, learning to play 1 position really well is more important than the ability to be 2nd, 3rd, or PS level at 4 positions.
I dont hate the guy. Im simply asking that since we've seen Jensen play far worse than Lewis for a pretty decent sample size... and seen him play really well for 2 games.... why is there a seeming majority of people who just "know" Jensens the better player? Flavor of the week?
Lewis is in his infancy, playing the position for the very first time, and has actually acquitted himself well. In fact, i imagine some of his struggles are due to Zuttah playing so poorly alongside him.
Zuttahs the only player on the line id consider switching at this point - and yea, id probably prefer Jensen there to Urschel at this point. But, im not shaking up what has shown promise to be a great left side of our line for the next 5-10 year just because a rookie in his 2nd game at the position has just been pretty good, and we have a guy who's played 2 really good games in his career behind him.
Wasn't discovered in the Offseason. Discovered after he was cut. It along with poor play in the preseason landed him on the PS. Fought his way back to the 53 by the last two games of that season. What he lost was gameday opportunity,. That was my point in all I said. He's not had a season to settle in to a position
Fair enough on the remaining points ?
Jags will be in a mood, being 0-2. I see our defense mashing the kitties. Depending on personnel decisions, I think our running game tilts this one in our favor. We come home 3-0 Prediction: 27-13 Ravens

Kind of hard to compete with people when you're hurt.
Precisely. The issue must have put John behind. He's been participating fully as of late. I would stay tuned to the regularly scheduled programming and see how this plays out by next week.

Jensen gets a lot of hype for a guy that was one of the worst guards in football over a 3 game stretch, then graded really well over a 2 game stretch. Of course this is according to PFF but i like their individual grades for OL.
Why is the good, 2 game stretch more indicative of who he is as a player than the 3 game, awful stretch? I mean, if he looked so great at LG after last season, whyd the coaching staff not even put him in consideration for the job this year? He and Urschel switched positions, and Lewis beat them both out. And thats over a large sample size of the entire offseason, TC, and the PS.
A broken clock is right twice every day. Just because Jensen played 2 really good games over his, what, 4 year career now? doesnt mean thats the norm for him. Chances are if it was, he wouldve proven it playing alongside the guys hes competing with day in and day out for a couple months now.
He's been healthy for 1 of those three, broken foot, apnea, and 1 healthy season. So that is three. This is his fourth year, so let's be a little more accurate.
Does two games make Lewis a known quantity? Has Lewis been asked to play four positions on the line? Zuttah? Urschel? Could they?
Guy is versatile but hasn't been allowed to settle into one. He did have some under par games, but the more he played, the better he got.
18 hours ago, ALPHA said:I wonder if theres another reason behind Jensen being on the bench.
I think part of the problem is they haven't let him settle in at a position since he got here. First center, then out to guard, then they put him out at OT, then back to guard. He played overall pretty well once they let him settle in for a few starts and finished the season last year, as I see it, pretty darn good. Then he rolls into camp this year and give him NO chance at becoming the starting guard. I thought he earned the shot. Now back to center.........I don't know what he needs to do to earn a look at starting. He, according to PFF (sorry Filmstudy) pulled some high praise and even the best scores of any OL in the league one week and better than average scores for a number of weeks. He is fully capable of being a strong LG or C.
He's in his last year as a ERFA. They need to give him a realistic opportunity to become a starter. I thought he earned it last year but apparently not. Maybe the coaching staff doesn't like his demeanor on the field. Hard to know why.......or its that the coaches evaluations line up differently than we the fans or the people doing the grading outside of the organization itself.
I don't think he's even approached his full potential. Fourth year in the league and only 25......
You have to give credit where credit is due with Urschel and Lewis. Jensen will just need to keep working hard and be ready for whatever or whomever will give him his opportunity.

I am concerned with the number of missed blocks. Centers never accumulate many, which is one of the reasons why I need separate grading scales by position. He's led the team in missed blocks in each of the first 2 weeks (7 each game) and the reasons are varied (misses in L2, pushed into backfield on runs, failing to make screen blocks, failing to get to a block in time, etc.).
This is what I saw in the game last week. He was late on his pulls to block on a couple of runs to the left. He also ran right past a defender to take on the OLB while the defender he passed on slipped through to make the tackle. Not sure if that was a blown assignment, but it looked like indecisiveness. Jeremy doesn't seem to get out to the second level as well as Jensen does. Jensen, at times, overruns his initial blocks because he is quick to move up field. He attacks and drives defenders off the ball well, and finishes blocks with attitude (ergo the skirmishes after the echo of the whistle). I think when he, Urschel, and KO were in last year they had very good chemistry. Even KO gave Jensen props last year on Twitter for his efforts. We need that nasty on the line.

Are we forgetting how badly Jensen was getting pushed back on some plays in preseason? He's probably not going to be much better than Zuttah, if he's better at all. Urschel is probably seen as a backup guard and 3rd-string center behind Jensen, looking at the preseason snaps.
I'd defer to Filmstudy and how he scored Jensen. I don't think he played badly. He finishes his blocks and he gets to the second level on running plays. He has more lead in his shorts and has better feet and speed to the point of contact.
14 hours ago, Sami84 said:I think Lewis has been thrown into the fire too early and in the running game in particular he's been awful. Combine that with zuttah and you have a recipe for NO run game. Jensen has been great at LG.Urschel should replace zuttah simply because he cant be worse than zuttah.
When John and Ryan were playing together last year, I think our left side was very competitive. I watched Zuttah very carefully in this last game. He was late getting to blocks, and seemed to lack vision and decisiveness as to where and who he should be blocking. Looking at him, he seems to be lighter than last year. He's getting pushed back often on pass pro, and is engaging on run blocks he does make, but does not sustain them long enough or continue to have the leverage to drive his man back. We need a bigger center. Jensen would get my nod right now.
The Good: Tuck and Pitta
The Bad: Zuttah
The Ugly: The Browns

Yea, center is a cerebral position, but you also need to have the strength. When Urchel didn't have help from a guard, many of the times he was put on skates into the backfield. It is possible that he gained some strength in the offseason, but with him being injured for so many weeks its hard to tell how he is going to do in a real game. That said, I read somewhere today that he was cleared to play, so it will be interesting to see where he fits. If Zuttah really struggles in the game they could most definetly take him out. What I am unsure of is the fact that the depth chart (yea I know its unofficial) has Jensen as the back up center. The reason for this, I assume is that Urchel was penciled in as the starting left gaurd before his injury. Because he was the starter I am sure he got all of the reps at the guard position. I just wonder if he as able to take any reps at center. That is all speculation though. We may just have to wait and see.
I think we'll see Urschel and Hurst dress and Jensen will be inactive. Urschel seems to have Harbs favor right now, and while Jensen has played a smattering of Tackle, I don't see them opting to Jensen and Urschel as the backups. If Wagner were injured, I can see Yanda sliding out to RG and Urschel being planted at RG. If Stanley were injured (perish the thought) then Hurst would enter at LT. I think that is the crux of the matter. I don't think they'd want to have that scenario happen without a "true tackle" in reserve.
Last year, Urschel was the primary backup (G/C). I don't know that he's lost that position yet.
I just don't see Zuttah losing his job right now. If he did, then I think you'd probably see Urschel at Center and Jensen as the primary G/C backup.
My personal feelings are that Jensen is a stronger and more aggressive player than Urschel, hands down. Chaos math is no substitute for horsepower and attitude in the trenches. His scoring by outside sources (if you take any stock in that) shows he tends to be better on game day than either.
2 hours ago, Filmstudy said:Difficult to sit folks on game day with this roster, but here's my shot at the 7:
Powers, Dumervil, Dixon because of injury
Hurst because he's the last OL and teams typically dress 7.
Price because he's the CB who has not yet played S (Canady plays)
Henry because the Ravens decide they can get through the opener with 5 DL--Scares me a little, but the Ravens average approximately 2.4 DL per play, so the other DL will average 48% of snaps.
Correa because he has the least contribution this week of the OLBs and Carter can take up a portion of pass rush responsibilities plus ST.
Two other possibilities I considered were Maxx Williams (if not all the way healthy) and Canady, but I think they'll both be active.
Hurst will dress. Gotta have a tackle. Urschel will not dress. Jensen will.
Brandon Williams 2 sacks and 4 QB hits!
Guess what I am looking for is that we put the game away with a lead. Seems last year we just did not finish games strong in the 4th. That is the biggest element I'm going to look for is a change in that problem from this team. Get a lead, keep the lead, finish teams off. Minimize the long 3rd down conversions and avoid stupid penalties that extend drives.
We have a great chance to start the season with a strong record. This game is critical to setting that tone.
If we are at the game: Jersey, arrive when gates open, eat sliders, stand on opening series if we have the ball
If we are at home: Jersey, chicken wings, flag out front
Nothing major, but our routine!!
QuoteI think emotional leaders set the "tone". They aren't necessarily seen as the epicenter of overall team leadership. Their expressiveness and attitudes breed intensity with other players. You need tone setters on every squad within the team. They get teammates fired up and bring excitement and intensity to the game. Gotta have those players!
2 hours ago, rmcjacket23 said:Could be wrong, but I believe Jensen has been the one taking snaps at center in Zuttah's absence. It seems those two are somewhat "competing" for that role, not Urschel.
Believe Urschel is squarely being considered for LG only at this point. I don't think the coaching staff was very happy with his play at C last season.
All moot, because Zuttah is a fine C and will be the starter there unless he gets hurt.
In the first preseason game, Urschel relieved Zuttah, sliding from LG to C, and Lewis went to guard on the first series that Zuttah and Yanda went out. Jensen came in afterwards to play C. I think Urschel has lost the battle for starting LG. Jensen and Urschel will battle for the first backup in if Lewis or Zuttah go down.
I think Urschel is a better guard, and that Jensen is more natural at Center.
22 hours ago, rmcjacket23 said:Yes but that also begs the question that, if they actually needed him to play, would he have?
I think the general consensus was that he was over his injury during the season and just wasn't active because he wasn't good enough to play on gameday.
He had a Jones Fracture in his foot. He had some relapse issues with the bone knitting together and it didn't heal as quickly as they believed it would. If I remember correctly he wasn't really available until the last couple of games that year. Kind of pointless risking him at that point. He then had issues with Apnea the following season and was cut and cleared waivers to the P/S. He eventually saw the field during Pittsburgh playoff game on ST that year.
16 minutes ago, BmoreBird22 said:He filled in at LG; Urschel was at C. I would imagine Urschel (the resident genius of the team) was the one making the calls.
Urschel wasn't on the field vs. the Lions.....that was the game and situation I was referring to. Jensen was playing Center as I am sure you know.
Sorry if I was unclear.......
