IMHO Safety is the position requiring the highest football-IQ of any position on both sides of the ball (OK Except maybe QB). It probably has the steepest learning/development curve between college and the NFL because of the limited offensive variation a college Safety will be exposed to compared to what they will face in the NFL. I loved Matt's attitude when he was first drafted, and had high hopes for the guy, hope he makes this his year. I remember another DB called Jimmy who was constantly regarded with scorn around here two-three years back, and he came good. Hopefully Matt can too.

Sizeable and suitable punishment, hope it sticks (ie not reduced on appeal). Will give some credibility to NFL rules if the poster boy has to wear his punishment.

Don't much at all about the NFL player rankings, their a popularity contest and nothing more. Doubt Joe cares either, see that relaxed smile on Joe's face in the article about him being "fired up"? that's a guy who's won a SB and SBMVP who feels he has nothing to prove to anyone and just works as hard as he can to be the best he can for the team, because that's what it's about at the end of the day. To be honest I care more about the ineligible receiver declarations the Pat's used than about deflate-gate. One, because the ineligible receiver declarations were done knowing full well it would confuse the hell out of the umpiring crew and not be efficiently communicated to the D. Two, I reckon ball tampering probably happens a lot in the league, and ranks low on my list of concerns compared to steroidal PED's and such (which over and above being cheating are a genuine risk to the long term health of players) ... my two cents, feel free to neg.

I have imaginings of Webby and Jimmy staying healthy, being our main two guys, with Tray coming in to play press coverage on three receiver sets allowing Webby to work the slot. Maybe I have a fanciful imagination but I'd love to see this. Also watched La'el Collins slide and slide and then just not get drafted, made me wonder if there were character issues we aren't aware of or something? According to nfl.com he was slated to visit with us late March? Don't know what's going on with this guy. He looks pretty good though, wouldn't mind seeing him in purple and black.

I'll never argue with Ozzie's and Eric's philosophy of the best value player, even if it sometimes means needs aren't addressed in the high rounds, as it delivered CJ Mosley last year who I'd bet my house is going to Canton one day. It was just great to see the best-player philosophy address some serious needs we had this year, an alignment of the stars, and I can't wait to watch some football. Bring on September!

To all the people negging this pick, yeah we didn't get a "position of need", but watch some tape and read up on the intangibles, we just drafted the guy who's going to be captain of our D in five years time. If you put much stock in the nfl.com draft-ratings (which are probably as only as subjective as anyone elses opinion), this guy was rated eigth and we got him at 17, the best rating jump of any pick in the first round. So any way you look at it we got a steal .... neg if you need to

We're gonna be pretty damn solid in the middle of the D there now. Been tracking the progress to date, and seven teams so far have picked at positions not deemed to be "positions of need" by nfl.com (including us), so looks like several other teams are going BPA as well.

What do you usually get for your fifth round pick, probably something like: 33% chance of a pre-season cut 33% chance of a career special-teamer 33% chance of a starter 1% chance of an all-pro Getting a seasoned vet who can play multiple positions on the OL entering the prime of his career is a bargain, nice one Ozzie!
