I don't think that we develop talent that well at all.  Sure, some players have left here and do okay(and some not so okay) elsewhere but I wouldn't say that it is necessarily due to how well we developed them per se. Some of that to me is just them having a chip on their shoulder and wanting to prove the Ravens wrong for cutting, releasing or trading them.  They're grown men and egos are bruised so that happens!

Here is one scenario that I always think about in reference to our "talent development"....

In 2010, Antonio Brown was drafted by the Steelers in the 6th round and the 195th pick overall.  Today, he is a flat out stud and superstar wide receiver in this league.  Some say, that he's arguably the best in the league.  Imagine that!  A 6th rounder the best in the league.  Then, the very next year in 2011, the Ravens draft Torrey Smith in the 2nd round and the 58th overall pick.  Torrey was selected 4 rounds higher than Brown but he has not "developed" into half the receiver that Brown is and neither is he in the conversation with the likes of a Julio Jones or A.J. Green for that matter.

"Why is there such a huge disparity between our initial 2nd rounder's performance and the Steelers' 6th rounder's performance?"

Well, I'm pretty sure that there will be all types of excuses and justifications and statements of "to be fair" made for that but to me, at some point, the harsh reality is that we may need to face the music that we really don't draft or "develop" these players that well.

Using Antonio Brown vs Torrey Smith as a justification for saying we don't draft or develop players well is like saying 31 other teams in the league can't draft or develop QBs because Tom Brady was a 6th rounder.

Or... teams cant draft or develop CBs outside of Seattle because of Richard Sherman.

Using a gigantic outlier as a basis for an argument is just silly and misleading.

We're 3-0, the Bengals lost and the Steelers are down 10-0 atm. Even though this wasn't our most clinical win, you'd think this place would be a little more upbeat.

    Exactly...

Never seen an 3-0 start where people are screaming to fire coordinators and bench starters. I mean, yes, there are some places to improve (there always will be), but the tone makes it seem like we are some bottom feeder and not the top of one of the best divisions in football.

yeah i agree - the gameday roster sizes dont need to get bigger but it just means that more players have a chance to develop

I almost think they should increase the active roster from 53 to 70 and just do away with the practice squad.

Watched the pre season? How about last year when he actually played? the eye test said that this guy is a player. I'd see more reason to cut campanaro or perriman than butler. When one of those two is out for the season this will come back and bite them in the you know what.

Perriman wouldn't last 2 seconds on waivers. You are far too emotional in your logic. Perriman is a first round pedigree who looked solid in his only action. Butler has played great in preseason games and wasn't bad as an injury replacement... but nobody would call him a future #1 WR like many would project Perriman.

    Camp might be gone too.

I'm sorry but if we cut Bulter in exchange for Devin Hester this FO is making the wrong choice.

I like Butler as much as everyone here... but we have nobody right now that can consistently field a kick. I'd rather have Hester than Butler who would likely be an inactive on game day.

Butler would be behind SSS, Wallace, Aiken, Perriman, and Moore. I would also think Gillmore, Williams, and Pitta would be looked at before Butler when it comes to extra targets if one of those WRs goes down.

    2014 for both.

With Hammock, Taliafero actually looked really good, Forsett obviously had an excellent year, and Dixon is looking like a stud and should be the starter sooner rather than later.

The real prize for Engram is Kamar Aiken, who did really well last year, but might take a step back just due to depth. Perriman, who everyone here thought of purely as a speedster, showed real physicality and route running prowess last night to just turn his man around. And while I don't necessarily agree with the notion that Wallace was always a speedster, Engram has obviously had an influence and his hands look vastly better.

I wonder how much is Engram and how much is having Steve Smith out there.

  7. Marlon Brown

    James Hurts

    KLM

    Either Matt Elam or Levine

    Jumal Rolle

Maybe Arrington (I still have hope for Will Davis)

    A possibly traded Eugene Monroe

    Terrence Magee, Terrence West

A couple of the WRs... be it Campanaro, D.Brown, Kaelin Clay, Jeremy Butler
