I think we didn't want to waste a pick on a guy in a weak WR class. That's what I think happened here. I think we decided to load up on areas where the Draft is strong and avoid those that aren't. We haven't always done this but I think we've changed our strategy in the draft this year.

I don't think we were expecting 3 WRs to go in the top 10. If one of those guys were there we probably would have been more tempted to go with one but it sounds like we really like Humphrey(I mean we passed on Allen and Howard for him) so we may have passed on them anyways.

a 9 year pro anticipating pressure should be able to come up with a better solution then just throwing it off his back  without any defender near him.

so you actually want to blame ozzie because flacco is seeing ghosts?

No I would blame the O-line for pass blocking so poorly that it affects the QB. You have never seen a game where Brady gets consistent pressure put on him? It affects him even when he has a clean pocket. Can't judge a position group or player on one play and not take everything else into account.

Then it becomes what is wrong with the O-line. If a ton of resources have been put into the group, I would put that on coaching for not coaching them up. If the team decided to go full Seattle and ignore the group, I'd blame the FO for ignoring the group or not being able to pick good players for the position if the coaching is not at fault(granted there is no way to truly know this without being in the building all the time). I mean sure the line should not give up pressure but we don't go into the season wanting the group to be bad so somewhere along the line mistakes were made. I mean the QB is getting hit so often he can't trust his blockers. That is a significant problem and just putting that on the QB is really ignoring much of what is going on. Instead of asking what or who, the question should be why?

Another part of what allowed me to have this pick grow on me was the way CBs went flying off the board in the late 1st and early 2nd. I really thought that pass rusher was going to be a more challenging need to fill and I wanted it filled in the 1st round with either Barnett or Reddick. Of course, to get either of those two would have required a trade up.

Given some of the pass rush help we were able to get later in the draft, failing to trade up (presumably for a pass rusher) may have been a blessing in disguise. The impact of the addition of Humphrey, Bowser and Williams should be felt almost immediately. I'm of the mind that you'd be hard pressed to see these needs more effectively addressed.

Yeah Williams and Bowser will be nice, especially excited about Williams in the 2 minute drill. We have needed a guy like that for a long time

so you think its fair to blame ozzie when flacco throws off his back foot with no pressure what so ever?

cause i specifically gave that as an example of when i  will criticize him.
i also said i wont criticize him if he is throwing off his back foot cause a defender is in his face right off the snap.

what exactly is not fair in this way of thinking?

If he is anticipating pressure being there due to being hit so often and doesn't have pressure for once but thinks he may, I'd find it hard to criticize the guy. You see ghosts when you are always getting hit.

  5. I am going to give this draft an A, I think we did a really good job getting the best players available. The offensive guys all went earlier than we had them ranked so we scooped up value on the defense. Nothing wrong with that. I am concerned about the offense for this year but I am as excited about the defense as I have been for a Long time.

  6. I am really starting to like this pick. I know I criticize those people that always have picks "grow" on them after their initial reaction but I really like this situation for Humphrey and watching the interviews I think he will be good for us. He doesn't have to start immediately and if he does start he will be the #2 CB with plenty of potential safety help. We have a lot of flexibility with him based on how he develops and the Alabama defense is complicated meaning he should be able to grasp the scheme stuff a bit faster than most guys. And when we get him developed a bit on locating the deep balls and the footwork a bit we are talking about a 6'0 197 pound guy who can run in the low 4.4s and is physical in the run game but also quick enough to run a 6.75 3 cone drill. Been wanting more CB help for years and I think we have found it.

Fighting till the very end.  I love it.  @52520Andrew Might have been one of the reasonable ones. Can't remember the discussions with him, though.  I do know some of the few you speak of.

There are definitely people who are biased against the defense, we all know who these people are. Plenty of other reasonable people though and no reason to go crazy when some people want to give the offense a pass based on questionable talent.

I was tough on the defense in 2015 with all the blown leads and the only big injury being Suggs but I think a lot of people were giving the defense a pass in 2014 when nothing was there. I remember saying all that offseason we were short on corners.

I agree, but feel we will contend and have a shot at making the playoffs.  I have us at 9-7 and a wild card spot and if the cards fall right we could end up 10-6

Yeah I think we can certainly make the playoffs this year but I don't see us going into New England and winning with this offense right now. I think if we get the offense fixed next year that becomes a lot more realistic.

    uh no.

none of you agreed with me and a select few  for giving the defense a pass in the past.

so its pretty hypocrite to now want us to do just that for the offense....

Well if one side does it, I guess that makes it okay for you to do it right? You ever hear the saying that if you argue with a moron you will lose because they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience? That is what you do when you throw excuses out there like that, drop yourself to their level. I won't bring up too much politics but I will say that people who talk like this in politics really make me mad. Have some integrity in yourself and don't let others dictate how you argue. There are people biased against the defense, plenty of others who aren't. Maybe you should appeal to those people in your arguments as opposed to looking just as bad.

I try to be fair in my judgments based on what I see. I can be wrong, I can be right. I don't treat both sides differently however and ask the offense to do more than they can while giving the defense a pass every time someone gets a broken nail. I give the defense a pass when nothing is there like 2014, I was a bit harsher in 2015 when I saw better talent and the injury bug hit mainly the offense but maybe I am wrong, they did pretty well for a good chunk of last year. I will say there is no excuse this year with all that talent but I think that is a given unless we get crazy injuries again.

As for offense, they haven't been this concerning since 2013 and it is going to be really hard for me to judge anyone with this current group right now. Flacco to me is what he has usually been which is inconsistent but on when it matters. But the coaches are going to have their work cut out for them in developing the WRs and O-line and should get some leeway. We don't have a reliable chain mover and have 2 holes in the O-line. That is an issue considering our only big passing options are speed threats and we will probably struggle having time for the deep routes to develop. I don't care if certain players have starting experience, so does Elam, you wanna give him a spot? If people want to criticize the offense for every speedbump they hit this year then they are no better than the ones you hate so much.

This. Our offense is relying in players with question marks everywhere.

Pass catchers that have shaky hands, waller Perriman and moore. Pass catchers with a chequered injury history, Perriman Williams Gilmore camp. Pass catchers with a chequered drug histroy, boyle.

Olineman that have been replaced by off the street cast offs and a 4th round rookie, Jensen and urschel.

These are the players we are relying on to step up. Maybe they do maybe they don't. But it's on Ozzies head if they don't

Honestly I think the Ravens are still a year from having a legitimate shot at getting another super bowl. I think the defense is ready to go but the offense is going to need another offseason to get the talent in there. Should be real fun after that though

    depends on the issues.

if flacco still has his crappy footwork  like the past 2 season then its his fault.
if his footwork is poor because there is someone in his face in under a second because oliners mis their block then you can look at Ozzie and the oline coach.

blaming poor player execution on the GM is anything but fair tbh.

no different then blaming flacco or the GM for a receiver dropping a wide open pass with nobody around.

we did in fact spend some high picks on offense the past seasons and did bring in some FA.
at some point it has to pay out ( looking at perriman and maxx in particular)

Uh no, the offense has it's share of holes this year and people shouldn't flip out if they aren't the 2016 Falcons. Honestly if the group is even average I will be happy. You have given the defense plenty of passes due to not enough talent in the past(with plenty of high draft picks being misses), would be silly to not do the same with the offense.

The defense on the other hand needs to be top 5 for us to have a chance this year and they have talent to very realistically make that happen. Maybe if the FO decided to add a bunch of FAs and spend the first 4 picks on offense you can do this whole no excuses stuff with that group but anyone with a brain can tell the defense has more talent than the offense and will need to make up the difference for the Ravens in general to be good.

Tim Williams - first step is out of this world, after the jump he eats up space super fast. Multitude of disengage moves, most notably his vicious spin, he drags the tackle, plants his foot and completely counters back upfield throwing his arms wide and violently to totally break free of the tackles arms. Powerful and violent hands, brings the pain to both the qb and the tackle despite being 10lbs less than ideal weight. Motor through the roof. Intense and passionate alpha male type player. Does a great job flattening the edge, gets a step and then dips that inside shoulder and throws it into the tackle keeping him staggered. Makes good reads and angles against the run but often gets too excited and fails to finish the play. Needs to set the edge more often there rather than penetrate.

I know someone who approves of this

  13. Malik Hooker: Took at 6, went 14. -8

Ryan Switzer: Took at 171, went at 133, +38

Jayon Brown, took at 156, went at 155, +1

Nate Gerry, took at 195, went at 184, +11

Only loss was Hooker but considering how I had nothing at FS and the QBs not going early in the forum mock, I am going to trust my own evaluations on him which say that he should be really good in that centerfield role. Tackling concerns should be balanced out by one of Gerry, Ihedigbo, or Blanton who can all do well in the box. Brown gives me some needed linebacker depth in coverage and Switzer gives me competition in the slot with Kerley along with a potential punt returner

I´m adding to this: Hooker will fall out of the top 10.
The former Ohio State SS is the only player in the top 16 since Kevin White (#7) with only one year as a full time starter.
The closest guys are Eli Apple (15 and 13 games in his last 2 years) and Arik Armstead (9, 11).
It might mean absolutely nothing but I throw it in there.

Half of my last year´s predictions were correct.. expect at least one of these to keep the trend going :P

Pretty sure Trubisky only started one year

Umm genius. The initial post was a 6th rounder is irrelevant. Its not.

Yeah and all you are doing is nitpicking someone's point to feel good about yourself. No one goes into the 6th expecting it to make their draft and if they do, they are stupid. Can 6th rounders be good? Sure but the chances they become good? Pretty rare. It is like buying a lottery ticket and expecting to win.
