As far as anyone can tell the Ravens made no effort to retain this guy... really unclear to me why the FO doesn't consider him to be a valuable part of the defense. Setting the edge is worth something... as is giving Doom a breather on running situations. Maybe I'm missing something, but lack of effort is curious.
IF Suggs comes back in shape and motivated it will be a big year for the "D", the FO should still consider a push to resign Upshaw to give doom plenty of breathers.
It's a sad day for both the team and the family. He had the poor judgement to be riding after dark, no lights, no helmet all dark clothing. Still a very sad thing for a fine young man.
Since we have a little cap space it's time to lock up Upshaw for this season and Brandon Wm's for his post rookie contract. Our "D" needs these two more than a free agent receiver or another safety. We have a plethora of draft picks that should be able to help us out at those positions if needed.
Ozzie has certainly whiffed more than usual the last 3 or 4 years but his track record on tight ends is still pretty good. Let's hope this guy works out well...
Smith is a class act and will be missed. He is on the downhill side of his career, however, and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets re-signed later at a lower number should the FO feel the need for help on the inside after the draft.
If KO wants to squeeze the last dollar out of this contract then he's as good as gone. No point wrecking the team for one player. Ozzie has other options... the draft for one. Even Monroe if necessary.
Lots of bad blood between Linta and the FO due to Linta's verbal barrage against Ozzie after the last contract. In the past Joe has always said he leaves contract matters to his agent. Unless that changes things are going to be tough.
