Thanks so it seems i was definitely wrong with the 2M roster bonuses. I think that gives the Ravens a little wiggle room then. They can monitor the progression and health of the other 4 TEs and if they are pleased cut Pitta post June 1st. Or they could just restructure his deal again and keep him around 1 more season.

I'm thinking that the Ravens may cut Pitta as well.  I mean, he played pretty well this season but they really can't count on him going forward in my view.  Why not roll with the likes of Williams, Boyle and Gillmore?

Everything is on the table for Pitta. I think the least likeliest outcome is his contract stays as is, with us paying him $5.5M next season.

A paycut is a possibility, though Dennis performed reasonably well this year, so its not as easy to ask him for one now as it was last season, when his value was about as low as it gets.

I also don't think a straight cut pre-June 1st is off the table either. You still get $3.3M in cap savings, and that could prove valuable during the earliest stages of FA. In general I'm not a huge fan of the post-June 1st cuts. There is some value in them, but you don't get to spend the cap space until June, so its not going to help you much in FA, especially if you've already locked up your draft picks.

A "wildcard" option would be to give him a short-term extension that would lower his current cap hit, but that seems highly unlikely.

My best guess is they approach him to take a paycut (maybe about half, paying him like $3M next season) and if he refuses, they outright cut him before June 1st. I think if you can bring his cap number down to the $5-5.5M range, I think he has value there.

I don't know if Pitta would take a paycut Jacket.  But then again, he loves it there in Baltimore and being w/Joe so he just might.

I think it's highly unlikely Pitta takes another pay cut. I personally don't think he had a great year but his numbers suggest he did so I doubt he and his people would take too kind to a pay cut. This is probably the biggest reason I see him no longer with the team in 2017. I think the Ravens will be more than willing to take their chances that this group of young TEs.

I think this is a huge factor as well. Pitta played a full season and that's great, but that doesn't mean he's out of the water injury wise. His hip is a ticking time bomb and while it sucks to treat him like a throw away players, his contract situation makes things tough like you said. I'd be very surprised to see Pitta a member of the 2017 Baltimore Ravens no matter the route that is taken to reach that conclusion.

    I'm thinking the same thing.

Both Todd Heap and Derrick Mason were cut before training camp in 2011 and what had to make that decision even tougher is the NFL being in a lockout so the Ravens couldn't see the development of Dickson and Pitta during offseason workouts or mini camps. As soon as the lockout ended, the Ravens cut Mason and Heap almost immediately. I have to think if there was no Lockout those moves would have come much earlier.

I could see Pitta being like Forsett and being a guy cut during or after camp, but I also know his contract situation is much different than Forsett's was. Forsett was inexpensive and that made keeping him around much easier, Pitta is due like a 2Mil roster bonus on March 1st. The Ravens would save 3Mil by cutting him and that could go a long way to maybe adding someone like Melvin Ingram in FA. I think it'll be a situation to keep an eye on.

    Source for this?

No source, that's why I used the phrase like 2Mil because I was trying to remember a report I read earlier this year when his deal was restructured. Is that number not right?

Actually I think that number maybe wrong. I know the Ravens will save about 5Mil if they cut Pitta after June 1 but without restructuring his deal or cutting him he'll count for about 7Mil against the cap. Way too much imo.

I could only find this info guys....

It's hard for me not to have a mindset of hurry up and get this game over. I already have a mind towards 2017 but i'm always excited to see the Ravens play so I'll be front and center tomorrow. I am excited to see some of these younger guys play a bit and also the Ravens are playing to finally get that Bengals monkey off their back no matter how insignificant the game may seem.

p.s. I can't recall who or what led to the pool pic, but if it's a superstition or meant to bring good vibes towards the game, it might be time to change things up based on how the last few seasons have gone. The team will probably be making some major changes, maybe the fans need to as well.

    Same here RF23.

Just ready to watch them play and get this game over with.  Again, I expect pretty much of the same from them that we've seen all season long.  No need to expect anything different at this point.  Just get through the game healthy.

on another note, I never understood the pool pick thing.

  4. The mysterious “foot area” injury that outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil has been working through all season has finally been revealed.

    And, it’s quite significant.

Dumervil, who turns 33 next month, had surgery to repair a torn Achilles, according to ESPN’s Jamison Hensley. The motivation behind the secrecy was that Dumervil didn’t want to become a distraction to the team.

I knew there was something else going on with this cat.  And the secrecy nearly all season long?  Man what a joke!

The legend of the Madden Curse has grown from a simple joke to the sort of superstition that has fans aggressively campaigning to keep their teams’ stars off the game’s cover. It started in 1998 when Garrison Hearst appeared on the cover of a Madden NFL 99, then proceeded to break his ankle shortly thereafter. Of the 19 players who have graced the cover Madden games prior to this season, 17 have had troubling or abruptly shortened seasons following their cover debut — including several who suffered season-ending injuries shortly after their game hit shelves.

    That's all I've been saying.

I find it interesting that the "majority" of players on the Madden Cover had low productivity or got injured in "that particular season."  Who knows, maybe it was in "the mind" of those who got injured that believe in curses?  We  also constantly hear about the "Rookie Wall" and the "Sophomore Slump" in the NFL.

A few weeks back Zeke from the Cowboys stated that he doesn't "believe in" the rookie wall and is ballin' out like crazy this season while other rookies hit "something."  Or maybe....it's just all in their heads perhaps like the so called, "Madden Curse?"

So some players have bad years, and others have good years... and that is the barometer for calling something a curse?

If that's the basis you guys are going with, then you're setting the bar unbelievably low there. I wouldn't expect a curse to be so selectively biased, especially when its not actually a real thing.

We're not addressing players having bad or good years here though.  Which I don't doubt happens to them one bit.  But, we're talking about a "specific" season. One in which involves an athlete being on the Madden Cover.

Now, once again, I don't personally believe in curses but stated that those who were on the Madden Cover and got injured "that particular season" after being on the MC was an "eerie coincidence"  did I not?

My rebuttal, to your statement in the previous post......which I also substantiated with links.....was that; while a mere handful of players who were on the Madden Cover did play well or avoided a injury, "the majority" of them succumbed to some kind of injury or low production that particular season "after" being on the Madden Cover.

That happens to be a known fact regardless as to whether or not myself, you or the injured player themselves choose not to believe in or not to call it a curse.  To say that the so-called curse was selective?  I wouldn't know about that cause agan, I don't believe in curses.  That maybe a question for one of those injured athletes to answer.

It's fun to talk about the Madden curse (as one who talks about said curse), but the reality is that it's similar to being on the cove of SI - the athlete's already at such a high point in their career that sadly the only way to go is down (or staying at that height as a best case). Though talking about it doesn't necessarily mean you believe wholesale in it either - like I say it's just interesting to talk about, especially when a Steeler gets on there. :P

Although I don't believe in curses....again...to me...it is a very interesting coincidence that the athlete on the cover actually gets injured that season or their production noticeably drops off.  Gronk is the cover athlete this season.  And....we know the rest!

Cool. There's also been several players who have been on the Madden Cover and went on to have highly productive seasons the following year.

So is it a coincidence that they were very good the next season as well?

The number of players on the Madden Cover that got injured that particular season far outweighs the players on the Madden Cover that went on to have productive seasons the following year.

Here are a few interesting pieces written on this very subject:

Oh I agree entirely.  The early round pick success rate is pretty awful in recent years.  We really need to start hitting on the early round picks.  I was just pointing out more that the stellar 4th round is going to appear to give them a little more leeway.  Something does have to change and change fast though.

Perhaps that is due to the draft philosophy of..."Best Player Available?"

I'm afraid that could be the case. I firmly believe we will view Doom that way and given his $6M cap savings, he's a virtual guarantee to be cut. Sizzle only save $1M, so the only way he goes is if he retires. He's got one more year on the roster. Hope he can really recover from all his injuries to the extent that he can at least be effective in 2017. But OLB is the #1 offseason need by a huge margin.

I absolutely agree!  Our pass rush has been abysmal down the stretch.  We got to upgrade Suggs and Doom.  I'd even throw in upgrading at the CB spot as well cause Jimmy can't seem to stay on the field an entire season.

Who would you suggest us getting Mili?

I haven't really drilled down into this just yet Deflated but I will.  I get the free agency piece but I just don't feel that we have to always keep bringing in these "old" cats on the back end of their careers.  They generate a little spark, then we're all in here complaining about same old stuff over and over...."WE NEED PLAYMAKERS!"

Have to sign a veteran possession receiver. Neither Wallace or BP are trustworthy enough, have the route running ability or have the hands to be that type.

Who says that a possession receiver "has to be" a veteran?

To be honest, I'm getting sick and tired of the FO running these old cats that's on the backend of their careers in and out of here live a revolving door.

We lack playmakers!  We need some young lions on this roster....teach'em, train'em and then TRUST'EM!

  13. Coaching is intertwined with the Ravens fiasco and not so easily dismissed or discounted imo.  However, my main issues with the Ravens are:

    1. No high caliber or high quality WR's on offense that can actually make major or huge plays when needed.  Serviceable cats at best on the roster.

    2. Ineffective and inconsistent pass rushers.  Younger, faster, stronger and hungrier lions are desperately needed at the OLB spots.  Suggs and Doom are done!

    3. CB quality and depth is atrocious.  No one actually puts fear in QB's...including Jimmy cause he's down more often than not.

    4. Offensive scheme is extremely archaic and outdated and therefore predictable and easy to stop due to the lack of offensive talent.

The Ravens have looked like the lost boys the entire season.  Other teams are clearly head and shoulders above the Ravens talent wise.

There are a few "possible" pieces there to build around but in comparison to other "top teams" it's not even close so don't fool yourselves!

The Good: The offense woke up and did what they could to deliver the win. Too bad "the good" here was not good enough to overcome the bad and the ugly.

The Bad: Zero pressure on Ben. At a time when you are looking for Suggs to play out of his mind, he was invisible. Doom was totally nonexistent for the entire season, partly due to injury but then he never got his legs under him. You can't succeed if you can't even lay a finger on Ben.

The Ugly: Blowing the game - not once but twice with a 4th quarter lead. The defense not only couldn't stop the Steelers from scoring TDs, they couldn't even make them do it slowly. Hot knife through butter.

Both of them are liabilities at this point in their careers imo.
