It's funny. We all say "In Ozzie we trust" and yet when a difficult decision has to be made we all freak out. Everything worked out fine when we cut Mason and Heap in the same off season.
Let's just wait and see how it all plays out.
No. And Flacco structured his contract in such a way that this wasn't supposed to happen.
I think a lot of people are being short sighted when it comes to Flacco's contract. Yes it has a low cap hit this year but you have to think long term. If they keep Boldin this year than he's an unrestricted free agent next year. Meanwhile we had to cut one of our young WR's who the team is supposedly high on for a one year rental of Boldin. Good teams would rather cut ties with players 1 or 2 years early than 1 or 2 years late.
Obviously the FO has more important reasons for cutting a guy like Boldin but I have to wonder if a side benefit of doing so isn't the FO's way of telling Flacco "you wanted to be the highest paid...this is what happens".
What most people don't understand, is that only bad teams pay players for what they have done in the past. Good teams realize when it's time to move on, we did it with Mason, we did it with Heap, we may do it with Boldin. I understand people want him back, but sometimes you have to sit back and realize how foolish it really is to cling to vain pedigrees and past glories.
The only argument I have is it seems clear to me that Q has another 2 or 3 good years left if not more. Mason was 35 or 36 when we released him. Q is only 32 and he is already slower than offensive lineman so there is no concern with him losing a step as he gets older.
Oh boy, apparently Boldin rejected the Ravens offer for a pay cut. Looks like he is gone and we'll have an extra 6 million in cap space. Though talks are ongoing, it doesn't look good. Sounds like he is going to retire unless he goes back on his word of retiring if he got cut.
That article made it seem like he would go someplace else. Hopefully it will be to a team we won't play for a few years. Although a Boldin/Webb matchup would be fun to watch.
I really think there is a good chance Ellerbe may join Kruger & Williams as FAs who do not return in 2013.
I'm stating to wish he will. There were always questions about his work ethic and comments he has made recently make me believe he will take the highest offer no matter what. I'm not sure how he will react to big money without Ray here to keep him in line.
Plus, Ellerbe is an injury risk. Sure he played through most of those injuries this year but there always seems to be something bothering him. We still have McClain (assuming his spinal cord injury is taken care of) and this is a deep MLB draft class.
I wouldn't be depressed is some bad team overpaid for Ellerbe.
Let's not forget the WR class this year is pretty deep. If we cut Boldin maybe we take Tavon Austin in the 1st and plug him in to Boldin's spot. It doesn't make losing Boldin any easier though.
