I just asked about Shanny on another forum and a Redskins fan wasn't too impressed with his playcalling.
He was at four of the games during their seven-game winning run in 2012 and felt it was more RG3's ability to extend the play that kept drives alive and won them games - although he was a fan of the zone run getting installed (so there's that).
For this season, he felt Kyle wasn't able to call plays with their QB in mind and it got predictable to the point where defences would stack the box and either stuff the run or bowl through the o-line and sack RG3. And apparently he was too quick to abandon the run outright (Morris went for 114 yards in the first half of one game, and got three touches for the whole second half despite their being up by 10).
So I guess there's a bit more elaboration on your downside. How much that was Mike's fault is something we as fans will never know. Although if the complaint is partly about RG3 being made into a pocket passer then the square peg may have found a square hole.
Me neither, I got that from a quote on ESPN from a DC in the NFC East. But I'd much rather have a guy who calls an unneccesary double screen then a guy who'll just call a flare route on 3rd and 9. Jmo.
Also guys like Sean Peyton has a habit of getting too cute and Pass happy as well, it's just a matter of perception and success. You figure if Joe was asked to pass 50 times in a game but complete 33(66%) 350yds and 3TDs with a win I don't think anyone would be complaining if we only had 15-20 rush attempts.
So while I don't like it, it's not a deal breaker for me.
That's my take. I didn't articulate it very well in my previous post, but doing the exact opposite's killed us just as much as would Kyle trying something flashy with the game on the line. Who knows, he might be the best answer to Pittsburgh's complex defensive schemes we get access to in a mighty long time.
I don't like hearing that he likes to get cute or pass happy, but otherwise I'm in love with him as an OC.
Tbh, I could live with getting cute or too pass-happy every now and again - especially with how going the other way's been known to blow up in our faces just as badly at times. As long as the new guy 1) injects some creativity to the offence; 2) builds around Flacco, and to a lesser extent his receivers.
Provided he meets those two criteria, we could bring in the Norwegian Minister of the Economy for all I care.
Cam's system needs to go. It rarely works. It hurts us more than it benefits us. I think any new coordinator is great for us. If Kyle is the man than cool!
I think our system had two main problems:
1) Some missing components during its time with us. Ranging from a missing deep threat pre-Torrey to a power running game to a consistent possession guy or two who could keep the chains moving and bring the defence closer to the LoS (thus freeing up room for the deep guy to blow the top off said defence).
2) Lack of a good play caller. Cam was awful and Caldwell could have done better, though we'll never know his potential.
The idea is that the draft and FA will get us some guys to fix the first problem, while a better OC would theoretically solve the second.
Basically this offseason has the FO at a crossroads. They can stick with the Coryell system and try to upgrade it (and almost certainly go with Norv or Chudzinski) or blow the whole thing up and rebuild a new system around Flacco (Shanahan, Kubiak). Upgrading our Coryell would be the easier route, and have less growing pains, but bringing in a new guy has all kinds of risk and long-term potential.
I also think that we need to decide on our longer-term identity quickly. Not so much for hiring someone before they get snapped up (although that too), but so we can get more out of our unseasonably long offseason this year. We'll need to decide on who to target during the offseason and that'll have all kinds of chain reactions.
"@RapSheet: #Ravens have interviewed former #Redskins OC Kyle Shanahan for their vacant offensive coordinator position, per source."
I wonder how it went. Good to see the FO's 1) shopping around for OCs; 2) not sitting on its hands to do so. Hopefully we snap someone up within a week.
Haven't seen Brad Childress's name thrown about before today. What does everyone think of him?
Less concerned by the prospect of Hostler than I was before. I think if we were gonna promote from within, we would've already announced it (Pagano and Pees were both promoted within a day).
It's just a courtesy.
This. And I don't think we'd ask to interview Ben McAdoo AFTER he agreed terms with the Giants if we were going to discard him for an internal guy anyway. That's way too much effort to simply not be interested.
It didn't work in Houston?
Top ten offense in 2012, 11th passing, 8th rushing, 8th scoring
13th offense in 2011, 18th passing, 2nd rushing, 10th scoring
3rd offense in 2010, 4th passing, 7th rushing, 9th scoring
4th offense in 2009, 1st passing, 30th rushing, 10th scoring
3rd offense in 2008, 4th passing, 13th rushing, 17th scoring
Yep, clearly didn't work.
By the way, those passing numbers were with Schaub.
Should probably do your homework before you make inaccurate statements.
Not the most balanced OC is he. Then again, at least those numbers are "skewed because one's in the top 5 and the other's only the top half" and not "serviceable passing game because there's no running game to speak of" like a certain other team.
Looks like the Ravens are at least keep all door open right now. Even though Ben McAdoo agreed to terms with the NYG, reports say the Ravens put in a request to interview him. That's a good sign. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000313273/article/ben-mcadoo-hired-as-ny-giants-offensive-coordinator
Hopefully they have already contacted the agents of other OC candidates and informed them they just wanted to allow the Caldwell situation to play itself out.
That's really good. If we're going to that kind of effort to look at a guy outside the franchise, I can't see us going internally for an OC. That just wouldn't make sense imo.
I think the FO knows something needs to happen - whether our current system gets upgraded or we go for a new one - and this is the best year we're likely to have for making those changes happen. It's also encouraging in terms of their intent to upgrade Joe's weapons. If they want to change, it'll be easier to bring a rookie straight in and train them up while everyone adjusts to whatever we end up doing.
We can be a top 10 offence without doing anything drastic to the defence and it looks like the FO knows it.
That play looked a lot like the one that they beat us on!
Haha, you can only call so many plays when you only have one guy to throw to.
I'll say this a lot of Schaub's problems came from him just making some boneheaded mistakes which we don't see from Flacco. Yes the guy will force some throws that he shouldn't but I'm talking about a guy in Schuab who throw off his back foot in his own endzone resulting in an game sealing pick 6, or a guy that tries to attempt a left handed pass with the game on the line. If Schuab can succeed in this offense Joe will thrive.
In this system Schuab has completed over 63% of his passes in 5 of his 7 seasons and it's not because he has razor sharp accuracy. It's because that offense creates so much space and even when working against zone WR either find a lot of open space or one on one matchups. I hate how many contested throws Joe has to make, we saw in 09-10 how accurate Joe was when he had guys who could get open. In Kubiak's system I think Joe could easily be a 65-66% type guy.
Then you look at Schuab's passing numbers for all those stats lovers. In every season Schuab played a full 16 games, he completed at least 64% of his passes, throw for at least 4,000yds and 23 TDs.
If i'm looking at building a team around a QB i just paid 120.6M to, I'm looking at these numbers and calling Kubiak in for an interview no doubt.
If he can make Schaub a Pro Bowler then you'd hope Flacco can become a universal top 10 guy (as well as showing just how important Pro Bowl stats are in someone's career).
Apparently the Dolphins are looking at Kubiak and Shanahan for their OC. Again, I think any right-minded OC would choose us but we have to move quickly.
haha yeah, west coast plays are longer than this sentence.

Translation: "Jordy, go long!"
Not seeing much buzz about him, any other teams talking to him? Think he's ready to make the next step? I see he does have some playcalling experience, albeit at Mercyhurst College.
Hey, that's a football powerhouse alright. ![]()
Wonder what system he would bring, prob wco being at the packers for about 10 years.
We need to get someone quick, to get the playbooks drawn up, and get them handed out to the offence. Would also like our offensive co ord involved heavily in the draft process
Absolutely. I'm all for being deliberate and hiring the right guy, but we can't afford to dither around too much either. We have the longest offseason we've had in a while and we don't want to spend all the extra time looking for a new OC.
Ravens have requested permission to interview Ben McAdoo, according to a league source.
Apparently the Dolphins have already spoken with him too, so you'd think we get a shot. This is where the Ravens' willingness to promote guys internally gives us a leg up imo. If you're an up-and-coming coach, would you want to head to a stable franchise with a good chance at climbing further, or to the Dolphins with everything they went through this past season?
@RavensInsider "Among extensive list of Ravens coordinator candidates, including Norv Turner, team is interested in Packers QBs coach Ben McAdoo, per source"
I hope these reports are true and we are going out of house.
I can live with that. It's encouraging to see they're looking at out of house guys. I think Flacco with a West Coast-style playbook with some Coryell principles thrown in and another receiving option or two would have some huge potential.
Yea his offense does dink and dunk but they run a lot of play action with deep routes and misdirection. Actually that type offense is exactly what i've wanted for years. That offense runs a lot of crosses, deep digs and double moves off of play action which is really tough for a defense to defend. I remember a couple years ago Ed Reed saying how that offense was maybe the best simply because it was so tough to defend.
I have to say you're beginning to sell me on Kubiak. I remember watching Texans games (even this year) and wondering how a defence would be able to stop them on those goalline plays. Between Foster, Tate, Graham, Daniels, Johnson and Hopkins they had so many ways to bang it in. Imagine what we'd be capable of with a good offensive draft AND a 6-6 QB for those sneaks.
What do you make of what I've seen to be his main criticism though? That he doesn't adjust very well and sticks with the same plan too often? I think we've had too many of those guys around.
Current? so Joe doesn't work with his receivers in the two weeks since the season ended, therefore he never works with receivers in the offseason? Even though there were links from multiple past offseasons indicating that he does, in fact, work with his receivers in the offseason?
That's some mastery of logic
Just ignore him. His incessant Flacco hate was kinda cute in the Flacco thread where I could ignore it, but now it's getting tedious in a thread where I (and others no doubt) want to read about possible OCs.
I always wonder how well former head coaches adjust to coming back as a coordinator. I can imagine that it's quite hard to go from a position where you have all of the power (well, a decent amount, not all) and then you come back and have to follow the orders of a boss who has your former position.
I know I wouldn't react well to that.
Not to mention how much the game will have evolved during his time at CBS.
Gotcha. I think Kouandijo needs to go back to school to improve his footwork against speed rushers
I agree. It kinda grates me to see him mocked to us in the first round all around the interwebs - even after he got abused by OU's rushers. Ah well, it's not like mocks mean all that much in January I suppose, and Ozzie pretty much dispelled the idea of RT being a priority during the State of the Ravens press conference.
Cyrus plays DB, while Christion Jones plays WR (special teams stud)
I think he means LT Cyrus Kouandjio. Not that I want him (or anyone who'll play RT for us) in the first, but I think that's what he was saying is all.
You know it will be that type of thread anyways....right?

Tbf, I think that's because the "who" and "what" are closely connected.
I think what we need is a clear WR2 and/or a clear slot receiver. Marlon Brown can improve at either role if he has to imo, and Aaron Mellette looked good enough in the preseason to play a possession guy if we need it (wouldn't be opposed to having him in the slot tbh). But Marlon gives us a lot of flexibility as to what kind of guy we can take.
Most importantly we need someone who can run short and intermediate routes, and has reliable hands. The short passing game is a huge link in the chain missing from our system as that allows us to attack more of the field vertically, forces a defence to spread out and really opens up the deep threat (I also think it would help the running game if we had that credible threat, though not solve everything by any stretch). Jacoby was good as that guy for us, but I fear he'll be a cap casualty. If we replace him I'd rather see a guy who can run better routes and has more reliable hands.
Being able to go up and the ball's another big component, and I think that inclines me towards a bigger receiver who can also run a few nice routes.
Finally, I think we need another deep threat more than the coaches are letting on. Don't get me wrong here, I love the idea of bringing our passing game closer to the LoS and think we should. But the deep ball is our big weapon, and if we let Jacoby walk then we'd only have Torrey for that role (and Deonte Thompson, who needs a bit more work). I'd rather have a second guy who can blow the top off a defence among other things, as any deep safety could just focus on Torrey otherwise.
I don't think we have a crippling need for a Welker-like slot guy, as long as whoever we bring in can provide Joe with a quick release valve if he needs it. Wouldn't complain at all about a pure slot guy though.
In the draft I really like Marqise Lee and Odell Beckham Jr as I think they're the best fit for all three categories. There isn't really anyone who stands out to me in a big way in FA imo.
Really nice to see a non-SEC team win.

Don't even joke about that. Still too soon.
