No.
i think its between ZD smith, carl davis, and perriman.
all 3 of them have all the tools to be absolutely dominant and among the best at their position. ZD smith was probably the biggest steal of the draft, pro ready, well rounded, doesnt have elite athleticism or burst but is more than adequate and plays tough and violent, when one of our guys steps down, he will hold it down at OLB for the next decade. if carl davis can keep that chip on his shoulder that came from falling to the 3rd round, and if he can get his conditioning right, i dont see whats stopping him from being the 2nd best 3-4DE in the nfl(after watt of course). and perriman, a few nuances here and there which are common problems for rookie wr's, and if he can maintain a respectable catch percentage and he could be a perennial 1000 yarder.
this is one of the biggest boom or bust drafts the ravens have ever had, and im fine with it, nearly all of these players have legitimate concerns, but those players also have sky high potential and mostly coachable problems.
I'm not gonna lie, it felt wrong to go against a defensive player lol
The experts were saying that Davis was one of the major steals of the draft so I'm excited to see him paired with Williams/Jernigan/Upshaw.
Tray Walker is very raw and he has the same build of jimmy smith. I'm excited to see his growth over the next several years.
I'm gonna go against the grain and say I think Darren Waller will turn out to have the best career. He was definitely a sleeper pick and will turn out to be the biggest surprise. I think him and perriman wil be our WR duo of the future. I also think nick Boyle is going to surprise. It's funny though bc going down the list of our picks I literally would not be surprised if any of them turn out to be big time players.
About all of our picks I was thinking the same thing, they each have the potential to have long careers.
Darren Waller, because he played in the 3-option read throughout his career at GT I wouldn't be surprised AT ALL if he has a better career than Perriman, not expecting it, but it wouldn't surprise me.
First things first, I am in LOVE with each of our picks. But, I was thinking, when it's all said and done(their entire careers) which rook will have had the better career.
I was a little torn between Perriman and Allen. Knowing our history on not drafting well when it comes to receivers I gave the slight edge to Allen. I honestly think that Forsett(besides Arian Foster) is the BEST back to learn from. Forsett's vision and burst through the hole is phenomenal. And when I got the chance to study Allen's career at USC he reminds me a lot of Forsett. He has a knack for finding the hole and he has very loose hips to make defenders miss in open space. He can catch the ball as well, which means that if he can pass block he could very well be a 3-down back. I do see him taking Tally's spot for that number 2 this year. I think that if he adjusts well we're looking at another good RB to add to Ozzy's list.
Fun fact: His pro comparison is Bernard Pierce. BP had a pretty good rookie season, still trying to figure out what happened last season. His second year our o-line was trash on a good day.
Thoughts?
As long as Trestman doesn't fall in love with the pass and abandon the run, I think that he'll be a great OC. As long as the offense has great balance I can see him up for another HC position within the next several seasons due to much success.
I'm surprised Randall Cobb's name hasn't been brought up as much as it should. He's in my opinion the best overall talent in the WR free agency market at the moment for what he's worth. If we get rid of Torrey and make a couple more adjustments to free up cap space, Cobb would be a home run signing, even if he is high $$. On top of Torrey and already Jacoby, I'd be willing to drop Ngata and Forsett, draft a RB in the 1st round, and hit the next man up motto on the DL front. We didn't skip a beat without Ngata the last 4 games in the run defense last season.
Picking up Cobb, whos only 24, and taking advantage of the RB talent in this years draft, snatching a fresh RB in the 1st round (Gordon/ Gurley) will solidify a young offense with huge potential in the upcoming years with Aiken, Gillmore, Campanaro, Taliaferro, Juice, Flacco and a solid Oline. With Trestman behind the wheel, that's an offense to invest in.
The fact that Cobb would demand a significant amount of money it would make it near impossible to sign him because Ozzie and co would have competition and Ozzie doesn't overpay for a guy. I don't see him nor Maclin leaving their squads
I just saw that Cary Williams was released by the Eagles and yes, I do think it may make some sense to bring him here on a cheap deal. He was never great but he was OK. I hate his mouth and attitude, though, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if we didn't bring him here, either.
Initially I said if the price is right, but then I remembered that he has an attitude issue and when he was here we always had Ray and Ed to keep defensive players in check.
So you are banking that we will grab a #1WR on first round?
Doesn't have to be first round, they're calling this years class just as deep as last years.
I honestly like Kenny Britt and Crabtree(if the price is right). Both have shown that they can be viable number 1 options.
If we didn't have another receiver over 35, I'd be all for it but father time is undefeated. Expecting our 34 and 36 year old "top 2 targets" to play at a high level for 16+ games is a gamble
I would agree that SSS fell off last year and Dhop i think is a better talen than Torrey already. What 25 year olds are you referencing. Id trust AJ alot more than most guys that we would be able to bring
Kenny Britt, Michael Crabtree and some ppl are saying Stevie Johnson.
I see what you're saying AJ is the ultimate professional in how he prepares and conducts himself
what does that matter if those wr's north of 32 are better than ou 25 year olds....talent is talent
Because there are younger guys who are available who are better than our 25 year olds. AJ is not elite anymore, he was the number number 2 option behind dhop last year and Steve clearly hit a wall after week six. To have our top 2 receiving threats over the age of 33 is playing with fire.
From the rumors, Andre Johnson will be a free agent. I don't think he'll reconsider, but he should consider realizing he is not an elite WR anymore. If he does, then it is very possible Ravens could give him an offer. Also depends on how much cap they have. This scenario only applies if Ngata, Webb, and others take pay cut or get released.
Another FA to look for and is more realistic, is Kenny Britt. A lot of talks about him getting traded to the Ravens and now that he is a FA, I think there is a very high chance of ravens signing him. He just never liked Tennessee thats why he never really tried haha, just my opinion. But yeah, Britt would be great on the squad.
I think that gives us space for the draft. We don't NEED to draft a WR at #1 so we can get breathing room and focus on other positions like CB depth, Young 3 down RB, and TE.
Only reason id say we don't consider AJ is because then we'd have two receivers north of 32.
Bernard Pollard is set to get released from the Titans. He said he wants to go to a team where he has a chance to win, any chance we pick him up for a second stint? I know he wasn't the greatest cover safety ever but he has to be an improvement from what we have and will probably come relatively cheap
Nahh, we released him because he has a strong personality and created tension in the locker room.
Ridley fumbles too much (even with Pats deflated balls!). Not the healthiest RB either. Why pay for average RB with a draft class this deep?
Ridley does have fumble issues but I don't think that's something that can't be fixed. Look at Terrell Davis. Plus there are many misses in the draft, most recently Montee Ball at RB. He was a great collegiate back and he's struggling to run away with the job that the broncos nearly handed him. If Ridley can fix his fumbling ways, behind our new and improve o-line there's no doubt that we could produce another pro-bowl RB via FA.
Would we be entirely happy if we sign McCourty and Torrey ends up in NE?
Definitely, as long as we end up addressing that need at WR. I love Torrey, but I feel that he is replaceable.
I still have a grudge against Crabtree for this:
But obviously, if he is the right price, he is talented enough when on the field.
YOURE A HORNS FAN TOO?!!!
But crabtree would be much more expensive.
If the price is right, of course lol.
I think after a down year(due to Kaep's struggles) and the injury two seasons ago, that he could be a steal. Well that's me hoping
1. Taliaferro's highlight reel was thrown in there because we got such a small sample size of him. Usually players' game style doesn't change, so the fact that YOU learn nothing from a players highlight tape does not mean there's nothing to learn. If you watch his highlight tape you would have learned that he's a downhill bruiser who gets only what's blocked. And that was his EXACT games style last year.1. Obviously, nobody cares about collegiate highlights. I've never learned a single thing about a player watching his Youtube highlight videos... there's undrafted FAs who are destined for the CFL that have highlight videos that make them look like Jerry Rice in his prime.
2. I agree that Taliaferro is a 3rd down back, but that's also irrelevant, because him being him means that spending much more than the minimum for anybody else is sort of a waste of money. What we do know is that he could probably easily average 4 YPC with this offensive line. That makes a 3rd down back a 1,000 yard back with a Forsett-level volume, hence why 1,000 yards doesn't mean much to me.
3. Ridley might be prime in age, but there's virtually no guarantees he's actually prime from an actual production standpoint. He also has terrible hands, which is problematic, given that our new OC really likes utilizing RBs who can catch passes, and Ridley's pass blocking is also suspect, hence why he was off the field a lot in NE in those situations.
4. In the present day NFL, there's really no such thing as "developing a RB". Most guys drafted in the first 3-4 rounds can be plugged into the rotation right away, just like Taliaferro and others were. If you are spending 1-2 years waiting for a RB to develop, you are already missing out on like 20-25% of their career.
2. RB is one of the easiest positions to make that leap from college to the pros and Tali struggled last year. He rarely picked up yards after contact and he can't make defenders miss in the second level. Not saying that he can't improve but you can typically tell what a RB is capable of after his first year.
3. Ridley has caught 75% of the passes thrown his way. He has such a small sample size because of the way that Belichek utilizes his RB's. Woodhead and Vereen are PRIMARY pass catching backs so in passing situations they were on the field.
4. My point is why not pick up a back that has proven that he can be successful in the league rather than gamble on a guy who you THINK would work out.
Steve Johnson would be a good addition, not a #1 but he'd be a good fit as a #2.
I honestly would rather Crabtree. IMO he's just as talented as Johnson.
Seen Taliaferro's collegiate highlights and what he gave us this year, he looks like a 3rd down back. His best game came against the browns who had one of the leagues worst run defenses. He only gets what's blocked. Ridleys vision is much better and he is a purer runner. Why waste time to develop a guy rather than get a reasonably affordable, talented guy in his prime? You can find a rookie in the 3rd or 4th round easily that could match or exceed Ridley's production.
Being a thousand yard back isn't exactly difficult these days... that's roughly 60-65 yards per game. Taliaferro could do that with 15-20 carries a game too.
Stevan Ridley.
Let Forsett walk, he'll demand around 2-3 mill more. Plus he's 26, 3 years younger than Forsett and there's no doubt that he can be a 1,000 yard back
If anyone thinks this takes us out of the running for other receivers:
Per Jason La Canfora's Twitter
Posted in the offense thread, but meant to post it here. lol
I don't want Edelman. I think that he was a product of his system. Plus we already have a slot receiver in Thompson. We need a guy who can play opposite of Torrey. I'd be surprised if we end up getting Edelman.
Replacing is much better. I'd rather give guys like Mellette a chance as our #3/4. Go at Steve Smith, Edelman, draft one or two receivers. I've seen what Jacoby can do, and that's far from enough. I've never said anything about replacing Pitta. Pitta is great. Jacoby could've been shown the door, just like Dickson and Clark. Now replace the bums with someone that has potential.
Please don't forget how AWFUL our return game was before we had Jacoby. don't forget that Harbs has a background in ST's and he probably remembered that. He's arguably the best return man in the game today. It seems that when our offense is struggling he provides us with a much needed lift with his return abilities, and that shouldn't be overlooked.
This is a HUGE shock! Hope we didn't overpay him.. We need a Center, a FS, a RT, and a ILB!
This is a HUGE shock! Hope we didn't overpay him.. We need a Center, a FS, a RT, and a ILB!
Ozzie doesn't overpay guys! lol
And I agree, I thought for sure that we were going to let him go. But he's arguable the best return man in the game so having him back is not bad at all for our special teams
Jason Avant WR would be a quality signing IMO. He is most effective on third down and that is what we have lacked since Boldin. With all the other big name WR's out there I think he will be cheap and we can sign him for 2 years.
Phil Costa C I think would be worth giving a shot to come in and compete with Gradkowski. They cut him from the Cowboys because they drafted Travis Fredrick and he was expendable. He didn't play well last year, but years before he started and was ok. He only 26 too and would provide experience at least.
Andre Roberts WR If we can't get Avant or if Robert's is in our price range I think we should go after him. He played a #2 role next to Fitzgerald and played well. He can work in the slot and can provide some serious YAC. He can go deep and I think he would be effective in Kubiak's play action since it involves long developing routes.
Antoine Bethea FS/SS He may be out of our price range, but if somehow we can afford him he would excel in our defense. He is a play maker and great in coverage. He played on a bad colts defense and still managed to make plays. He can match up against bigger TE's and allow the Ravens to use Elam in a creative way. Our secondary would suddenly become the best part of our defense and not to mention we would have Suggs and Dumervil rushing the pasher. Would not want to be facing our defense lol
I prefer Steve Smith. Steve Smith is an Anquan Boldin type receiver. He's hard-nose, he'll run block and he'll go up and get the ball! We have a good amount of young receivers on our team at this point and to add a veteran to that mix wouldn't be a bad look at all. It looks like Carolina wants to part ways with him and we're looking for a vet-savvy receiver. I know Steve is starting to get up there in age but all we need is someone to polish our young guys(minus Smith) for the next 2-3 seasons and our receiving core will be dirty. Having Torrey at 1, Smith at 2 and Marlon at 3 with a healthy Pitta. If our O-line can protect Joe our passing attack would be fun to watch.

Right now I have two Jimmy (purple) and Ray Rice (Purple)
I don't see myself EVER purchasing a white jersey lol
I REALLY love Db's for whatever reason, so if Hill makes the pro-bowl this year I'll probably get a hill jersey. Maybe even a Daryl Smith Jersey(dude has been BALLING and still he's not getting his recognition). It'll be between Hill, DSmith, Mosley & BWilliams... In that order.
