No matter what the Ravens do, I think it's going to still be a couple years before we can contend. Too many holes. Although the draft this year really focused on D, how many times do all of a teams drafted players come in and make an impact? Let alone undrafted guys. We better find a few UFAs to fill the biggest gaps we have this year, or we're in real trouble. I think next year the FO will focus heavily on offense, then we'll need a year to see how those picks go. By the 2019 draft we'll be looking for Joe's replacement and whatever holes are still there, which I hope aren't a lot.

Just can't feel super positive right now.

Depends on what we are "contending" for. If its for a playoff spot, we're already there.

If its for a SB, then yes, probably at least a year or two away.

I look at it this way...

    1. I don't see any team in our division, outside of maybe Cleveland, who has significantly upgraded their roster from the previous year. Pittsburgh did basically nothing in FA, and while they made some draft picks I liked, I still think their defense is a significant liability. Cincinnati is going to be a lot worse than people think they are, mostly because they're not very good defensively anymore and their Oline is atrocious. And while Cleveland is doing a lot of things I like, we obviously know they aren't contenders next season.

    2. If you make the case that our offense is still bad, we at least on paper upgraded the defense, or particularly, upgraded the secondary. I can't see a version of this team being worse on defense this year than last year.

In theory I suppose we could be even worse on offense, but that's hard to see based on how badly we looked at times.

Not likely this season that the Ravens will be playoff team. Too many new players trying to gel together. I do see it next year with all the new talent from this season and an improvement on the offensive side. Remember we got a qb that can be like hot and cold running water. And that means that unless we replace him (not likely) the defense is going to have to be on their game most of the time...

  2. Well Ozzie and Self Righteous John really screwed the pooch this year. Thank God this is their last year. Too bad the Ravens are stuck with the albatross, Pathetic Joe. Pittsburgh's gotta be over their laughing their arses off. Cleveland will finally be able to get out of the cellar this year.

While it's true the team doesn't yet have all it needs to make a run this year, these players are building blocks for the future. It's going to be a multi-year program that brings success.

I would like to hear how they screwed the pooch? They got really, really good picks at every level. Even this one for ST. Just because they didn't get the players that many thought we needed, doesn't mean everything is doomed. I love this time of year because it is exciting but we have so many people calling it this coming season over before we even have had a practice. This stuff gets old fast. Yes, I too would have liked earlier round offensive picks but we have a good amount of TEs and speedy WRs. Maybe they plan to run a 3 TE set, who knows. Maybe they can have pitta go out to slot WR/TE while 2 of the others boyle/williams/gilmore are at the line. Maybe they want to go ground and pound AFC North football again. Maybe Waller will go back to WR his more natural position. There is many possibilities that can happen in which we would be okay. So give it time and lets see what happens before sticking our hands in the air saying I surrender. If you want to do that go be a Browns fan. I particularly liked our picks. We got great value at every pick IMO. Also everyone riding Joe Flacco, yes he needs to elevate his game no doubt but name me a QB we can get who would be able to replace him right now? He is our guy and we have to support him and hope for the best. LETS GO RAVENS!!!

The net effect of this draft is that this is another year of 'rebuilding' the team for the future. Some may be impatient and want it all right away, but that rarely happens.

hope we don't get mangold and we will live to regret not getting anything for TJ he was worth more than 25 spots in the 3rd so don't say we got a 3rd rounder for him because we didn't we took another loss just like zuttah

Jernigan 16 solo tackles 15 assisted tackles. Pierce 19 solo tackles 16 assisted tackles. Let another team over pay TJ in the FA Market.

Why bother reply to people like that.... they clearly don't get it

no i don't get how you give up a 2nd round player from 2014 and a 3rd round pick for a 3rd round pick I'm siding with most people saying the eagles got the better of this trade by a long shot

What part of ''we weren't going to resign him'' don't you get? #1 he wasent even that good... #2 yea he was a 2rd draft so be it... your point? #3 saved us some money(even if its little) , its giving our young kids a chance(henry kafusi davis)which none of them played last year...and moved up 25 spots.. its like going from 4th to 3rd round (comp pick).. so I see it as a WIN WIN.. we could have kept him.. but what the benefit? getting comp pick for 2019?... just let OZ do what OZ does best and stop acting like you know whats best for the team...
I cant believe half of you call yourselves RAVENS FANS but god forbid they make a move YOU personally don't agree with.. they are dumb and losing their touch?

I believe their record over the last several seasons speaks loud and clear. Moves designed to be "win-win" haven't worked out all that well. So I can see an argument for the other side, too. Fans who question shouldn't have their 'fan-ship' called to question.

I think most of us still remember the sight of the mayflowers pulling out on the sad night. Definitely a dagger to the heart.

I remember Irsay telling then Mayor Schaefer that he'd never leave so what did he do he left in the middle of the night in the the snow. I hated him ever since and wish the Colts nothing but the worse of times.

Irsay was a pure liar. And one that would sell his soul for some money.

  6. Keeping Williams is on par with having Haloti Ngata back in his prime. Too often the team loses it's best and brightest to free agency and never progresses. Quality players go towards teams that have a nucleus. Look at how acquiring Weddle has paid off that way. In past seasons we became known as the team that lost good players each year. You cannot rely completely on players who are near retirement for stamina and health.

  7. I don't see a down side to loss of any player considering the teams record over the last few seasons. Some new blood might just be a good thing. You never know who the next superstar will be. Might be one of the replacements for some of those who are with us now. Good scouting plus good coaching might improve the chances of post season play.

  8. If the Ravens give up on players before they negotiate with them, don't they defeat themselves beforehand? How about appealing to team loyalty during negotiations. I realize not every player will accept less, but some will in order to be secure and win too. Each year we just write players off and in doing so have set a trend that is abominable for the team's morale. The notion that football is just a business is getting tough to take as a fan. Playing for the Ravens should be a privilege not a business. Drawing quality players into the team by being a winner is how NE works.

  9. The word 'old' should be replaced with 'stale'. 'Cause that's what the Ravens are. Same old, same old. Run of the mill. Safely mediocre. No risk, no gain. If anyone doesn't think coaching isn't the problem, just take a look at the New England Patriots. No matter the players, no matter the injuries, they keep rolling over other teams like a steam roller. That comes from good coaching. Meanwhile we just stay around average with no end in sight.

No Steve, old is stale. Result is loss of viewers/revenue. Guess if you just need a hobby it's okay. But if you want a winner more will need to be done.

  10. This article has much jibberish contained herein. The reason Hester came alive was the change in coaching. No mystery there. The notion that this year it's all about offense is bogus. Pburgh yesterday failed to score one single TD. All points came from failure of their offense to get the ball to the end zone. You might say special teams but not offense won that one. I did see some offense in some of the wins, but the statement that 'it' was all about offense this year just ain't so.

I realize though, that this time of year it is difficult to come up with good material for these articles, so I forgive. My main concern is what will be done to motivate this team going into the next season. And I don't see much forward progress so far.

I saw a lot of manufactured excitement in both of yesterday's games due to officiating discretion. One time I saw a pburgher basically body slam a KC player to the ground and got away with it. Meanwhile some more questionable behavior was called by the refs. We all know pburgh plays dirty and try to intimidate opponents on and off the field. I think the matchup between them and NE is appropriate. They really deserve each other. And if the NFL is wondering why viewership is down, the idea of one team going to the championship game for umteen years in a row may be the reason why.
