Possibly the worst defense in the NFL; quite an accomplishment when you look how bad some other defenses are. Easily the worst WR corp in the league. Now that Monroe is back, our OL might improve to mediocre. Which would be fitting, since he has been mediocre his entire career. Our ST is mediocre, at best. It is absolutely stunning that we could just as easily be 5 - 0 as 1 - 4 right now. Makes me really wonder how far Flacco could have gone on a better team the last five years.
Flacco coulda should also been in 3 Super Bowls with what we've actually had
So, is everyone STILL fairweather fans for calling 1-5 for what it is..game over. ?
No, the agreed that they didn't have the money to add another notable receiver. There's a difference. One of my biggest beefs with Ozzie and the Front office this year is the WR situation..
These guys sat down and decided that a WR entering his late 30s/an unproven rookie with droppies/and some other unproven wrs were gonna get the job done. Unacceptable.
Unfortunately, I don't think we can win this game.
We get behind early, take the lead in the 4th quarter but the defense falls apart late. Like every single game we've lost.
49er's 30. Ravens 27
Believe it or not, the boys of winter have already begun!
Who do you like this year? Any early predictions?
If the critique is bad drafts in the last five years, why have you gone back seven years to refute the contention?
Looking at the last five years, we have not had stellar drafts. I was hopeful these last two draft years may have turned the corner for us, but the evidence is they have not. Supposedly it was drafting where we separated, but as we let key veterans go in the last five years, we are not replacing their contributions through the draft.
OK let's go back 5 years
Jimmy Smith- Drafted 27th overall-The teams best DB currently
Torrey Smith-Drafted in the 2nd round-Instrumental in getting us a super bowl
Pernell Mcphee-5th round-Developed into a strong pass rusher
Courtney Upshaw- 2nd round-Starter
Osemele -2nd round-Starter
Matt Elam-32nd overall-Jury is still out, though he hasn't performed up to being a 1st round pick, he is still young.
Brandon Williams-3rd round..developing into one of the best D lineman in the league.
Kyle Jusczyk -4th round has done a nice job at FB.
Ricky Wagner-Starting RT. 5the round Overall in 2 seasons has been solid. Still young.
Kaplan Lewis-Moore-A good 6th round find..is an excellent peice of the day line rotation.
CJ Mosley-17th overall- Monster rookie season, not quite as good this year but still has a ton of room to grow..great pickisser
Tommy Jernigan -2nd round..again a dependable Dlineman.
Crockett Gilmore -3rd round..Good pick there.
John Urschel-5th round..has been solid when pressed into service. Great depth.
Campanaro-7th round..Jury is still out, a playmaker when healthy.
Can't speak to this year's draft because they've all played 5 games or fewer..maximum Williams, nick boyle, Carl Davis and Smith are all looking good though.
no doubt ozzie has made some clutch short term fixes via free agency in the past, but my point is that strategy is starting to catch up with him. i'll give him the benefit of the doubt due to the injuries, but he could've been more aggressive with talent replacement at certain positions.
the amount of talent obtained compared to lost over the past couple seasons hasnt been nearly enough to stay afloat. the 80/20 philosophy is great but you have to know which position holds the largest constraint relative to the value. i knew from the day kyle arrington and kendrick lewis were signed they would not be the answer. i was surprised our organization was satisfied with our free agency moves going into the season. even up to week 6, it seems they keep putting band aids on the secondary while completely bypassing our pass rush situation.
no doubt the cap was against us but we couldve still make some trades and get a bit more aggressive in the free agent process. we failed miserably with snatching pass rush talent. you cant go into a season with two 30+ year old pass rushers and expect a rookie 4th round pick will be the answer for depth. that was the most important position to add depth but it was simply ignored. we have to start at the line on both sides of the ball before we fix anything else.
Who was available via trade, and at what cost? That must be answered before you can say that he should have traded for a pass rusher.
If it means we have to sacrifice re-singing 3 other players next year AND costs us draft picks, what is the point?
Well since the "season's over" you guys might as well turn off the TV and go about your merry way. No need in being upset every Sunday, right?
However, if you go to turn your TV back on during the playoffs and happen to notice the Ravens playing the dark horse roll as a wild card - just remember - you're not allowed to root or celebrate for them because you revoked your fan card in week 5 of the regular season. Wah, wah, wah....
No worries though, after the playoffs are over you can always reapply for a new seat on the bandwagon. Hell you might even be able to get a window view the way everyone is jumping ship.
cheerios fairweather fans
It has nothing to do with being a fair weather fan. It's called being realistic. If you look at my post, you will see that I said I'll never jump ship.
The fact is that this team hasn't proven that they can beat even an average team..maybe if the roster was even 80 percent healthy, we win 2 of those 4 games and we're still in it.
However, at 1-4 it is over no matter how much of a Homer you want to be.
Do I WANT them to go on a magical 9-1 run and be in the playoffs? Absolutely. It's not happening though.
^^^^ this. if a team gets 2 solid starters out of a draft thats considered a successful draft. if you disagree, look no further then patriots, packers, etc draft history.
ozzie is great at drafting, and a lot of people dont realize how much de costa has a hand in the drafting process as well. what ozzie usually struggles with is free agency. he has the right mindset when it comes to value, but fails to pick up the right players. if management is going to wait last minute for price dips, they better know who is worth snatching so late in the process. this, in my opinion, is where he rolls the dice and his luck is now running out.
Eh, Ozzie has done well in free agency too. Usually finding solid, productive players on the cheap.
Carey Redding, Trevor Pryce, Willie Anderson, TJ Houshmanzadeh was a decent 1 year rental, Derrick Mason,
My original post was that we've gotten production out of every draft, some more than others, but this seasons record has nothing to do with Ozzie not drafting well.
The Ravens were handcuffed this year by the cap which happens. If nobody had been injured..Suggs,Perriman,Pitta,Gilmore,Dumervil,Webb, Davis, Monroe. .this team is probably 4-1 right now.
This is the 2007 season all over. Good core of talent, too many injuries to overcome.
Stupid phone. .ugh. sorry about that everyone. I swear I was going somewhere with it!
Ok so I have been seeing a lot of posts and hearing a lot of people pointing to Ozzie drafting poorly over the last 5 years as a reason for this season'starts failures or struggles.
I don't agree.
Everything goes back to the start of the John Harbaugh era so well take it from there.
2008-
1- Flacco- Enough said. Franchise QB
2.Ray Rice- in the 2nd rlund
Agreed 100 percent. Finally someone else uses the word realistic
This is basically where i stand. A lot of people wanted to say its over after the Oakland game, then the cinci game and i was right there saying we are still in this race. The Bengals are an extremely talented team and i expected to lose to them anyways, regaurdless of how are season was going, im actually shocked it was that close. Then the Browns game- at home in a absolute must win, and we absolutely blew it on defense. Now you can sit there and say if it wasnt for one of the luckiest catches of all time, we win that game, but we didnt. If we cant beat the browns at home in a must win situation, with all the injuries added in, i have almost zero confidence we can go on a winning streak like one is needed. But if we did...it would just keep our "never quit stimga" alive
Now since the AFC is extremely weak, we might be able to hang in there, but dont kid yourself, we are not beating denver or NE in their house this year, Joe can only do so much, he cant rush the qb and play corner. I still want us to win many games as a possible, and will watch every game, because you have to stick by your team through the bad times to appreciate the good times.
We are spoiled here. Since the Harbaugh and Flacco era started. .
2008- 11-5 regular season, made it to the AFC Championship, knocking off the top seeded Titans on the road in the process.
2009- 9-7 regular season, wildcard spot.
Went into New England and TRASHED them in the WV game.
2010- 12-4 regular season, wildcard spot. Dismantled KC on the road in the WV game.
2011- 12-4 Division Champs, beat Houston in the Divisional round, and for all intents and purposes should have beaten the Patriots en route to the Super Bowl
2012- 10-6 Regular season, Division Champs, Trashed Indy at home, Stunned the Broncos on the road, and thoroughly beat up on the Patriots in Foxboro en route to being Super Bowl Champions..
2013- Even during the worst season to that point, the Ravens finished 8-8 and had a shot at the Wildcard spot if they could have found a way to beat the Bengals in week 17.
2014- 10-6, wildcard. Even with a diminished secondary, the Ravens finished with a respectable record and EMBARRASSED the Steelers at Heinz and but couldn't overcome the lack of talented DB's in a close loss to New England.
We've had plenty to cheer for every season. I am comfortable saying it's just not our year, because I know that the organization will have the team in a position to not only compete, but make another championship run next year..and I believe fully that we can.
As much as these 4 losses have stung we're still only 2 games back in the wild card race with 11 games remaining in the season. Yes losing sucks and it makes people feel a certain way but those 4 losses were by an average of 4 points and honestly could have gone either way. The fact is, we're not getting blown out of games. We're contending all the way to the final minutes and we're playing competitively.
Granted a 1st year offense, injuries, and penalties have made it a difficult start but these aren't things we cant overcome.
Don't fall inline with the rest of our naive fans who think the season is over. It's going to be a fight to stay in contention but it's looking as though 9 wins will be enough to claim one of the wild card spot this year and i have faith our team can rebound.
Take a look at the rest of the conference.
1.) Patriots 5-0
2.) Bengals 5-0
3.) Broncos 5-0
4.) Colts 3-2
-----------------
5.) Jets 3-1 > Wild Card #1
6.) Bills 3-2 > Wild Card #2
------------------
7.) Steelers 3-2
8.) Browns 2-3
9.) Raiders 2-3
10.) Chargers 2-3
11.) Titans 1-3
12.) Dolphins 1-3
13.) Ravens 1-4
14.) Chiefs 1-4
15.) Texans 1-4
16.) Jaguars 1-4
This is our remaining schedule and opponents current record:
6.) 49ers 1-4
7.) Cardinals 4-1
8.) Chargers 2-3
9.) Jaguars 1-4
10.) Rams 2-3
11.) Browns 2-3
12.) Dolphins 1-3
13.) Seahawks 2-3
14.) Chiefs 1-4
15.) Steelers 3-2
16.) Bengals 5-0
You can point to the fact that we are only 2 games out of the Wildcard race, but the fact remains that the team has to not only win games, but go on a remarkable run to just get to 9 wins.
They are 1-4 right now. So that means that they are going to have to go 8-3 the rest of the season.
This team has shown what so far that says they are capable of that?
No, it's not impossible. .it's highly improbable though.
Also, what happens IF they get there and have to play Denver or New England?
Sorry, but being realistic is the opposite of naive
....WE JUST GAVE UP 450+ yards passing to Josh McCown for crying out loud!
We lost to Oakland and Cleveland..two average at best teams and made them look REALLY good in the process.
It's over. I'm not turning my back on them or disowning my team and I'll be watching every snap until week 17 but the reality here is that the talent is just not there right now.
They are all #4's at best. Hope Waller is well the guy looks like he cares unlike Marlon
Waller was looking great on special teams. He was getting soooo close to blocking a few kicks.
This isn't on Ozzie at all.
The FO had to make some moves with the long term in mind.
Ozzie isn't the one out there getting hurt. Our WR's and DB's are dropping like flys. There just isn't enough healthy talent to put on the field right now to win. Actually, these games are close because of Joe and maybe a handful of other guys.
Seasons like this happen unfortunately. It's not really anyone's fault, just bad luck.
Because he's been on the team for less than a week. He's a #4 wideout. Nothing more.Chris givens didn't even touch the ball
Everyone talking about Givens as if he's going to be some sort of savior. ..
Dude was buried on the Ram's depth chart, showed flashes of potential a few years ago..and can return kicks. .
I'm not banking on it.
The spot we're in right now is that desperate unfortunately.
Anybody know what Jacoby Jones is up to these days?
It's possible that the Ravens CAN male the playoffs. Will they? Remains to be seen. .
Right now, we have probably the least talented Receiving corps in the NFL, no pass rush and some questionable play at safety and nickle. .
There are ton of IF's.
o i see. i hear new zealand is a delightful country. at least you have scenery. baltimore is just graffiti and abandoned buildings.
Not even close, sorry. Just like any city, Baltimore has it's very nice parts. The whole riot thing is a black eye.
There's no way that would ever happen.Maybe the league should utilize pre-entry compulsory breathalyzers or something.
First, they would never stop selling beer at games -Budweiser,Coors,and Miller are all mega sponsors of the NFL.
Secondly, do you realize how long it would take to test 70,000 people for alcohol?
Going to be a close game, I think we can get the win at home.
Ravens 20
Browns 13
I just don't understand how anyone can honestly sit here and say that this team is talented enough to make the playoffs right now.
Kamar Aiken is our best receiver...Kamar Aiken.
Even if we were 4-0 right now, the playoffs would be far from a garauntee.
This year, what was supposed to happen..what we thought could happen backfired.
We spend a 1st on a big play receiver to go with Smith and the rest of the guys to be solid 3rd options. He gets hurt forever. Then smith gets hurt. Then one of the "other guys" gets hurt. Oh BTW there's also the absence of the LT that hurts the offense.
Then on d, Suggs goes down. Arrington who we thought could be solid at nickel is terrible, and still not getting good safety play at all outside of Will Hill.
Running game has been absentee, and Flacco hasn't been at his super bowl best either.
Some of these guys are gping to have to put together career type seasons to turn this thing around.
You do realize that we are relying on roster bubble caliber receivers right now?
But you just picked a bunch of teams who basically have no playoff hopes... why on Earth would they want to take on a high cost corner? How do they benefit from that long-term?
I'm trying to figure out when fans decided that the NFL has turned into the MLB trade deadline, where bad teams sell off all their players and the good teams all buy them. We've already exceeded by trade expectations for the season by giving up a 7th rounder for Givens.
I mean the Bears traded two largely unproductive players and all of the sudden we decide that any team that is going nowhere is just going to trade us whatever we want?
And this ignores the biggest elephant in the room, which is that WE ARE 1-3. We are just as likely to be "sellers" as we are to be "buyers", even though the whole seller and buyer thing doesn't really work in the NFL.
I have been trying to make the same point.
They just don't understand how it works.
Of course Ozzie is going to make some calls, due diligence. But that's about it.
Would Anquan Boldin suddenly turn this offense back around? Probably not. I think everyone forgets how dude would disappear for 2 or 3 games at a time, then have a monster half in a game, then disappear again. Now he's old..er
What happens if they lose to Cleveland?

Just making sure ya know. Before Sunday, ANYONE who dare say that the Ravens aren't winning 9 of the last 11 were fairweather fans who were just obviously too emotional.
