It will be interesting to see what we do with our 1st round pick in APRIL. We should be taking DB's in the first few rounds if this team is serious about improving the secondary. What we have now is just about the worst for coverage in the league. Guys are never really in position to stop the passing game no matter the team they are playing against.

we need whole new coaching. offense, defense, and head. If it's obvious to the fans, why isn't it obvious to Steve?

That is an excellent question that, for the life of me, I cannot come up with an answer for. I Have to believe that this next season will Absolutely be a make or break year for Harbaugh. He Needs to get us back into the playoffs or he won't be getting another chance. It very well could be yet another tough year to watch and be a Ravens fan. And I'm stuck with it because NOTHING could change the fact that I'm a RavenManiac. That's for life. I honestly hope that I am 100% wrong about Harbaugh and will very happily eat my crow if he proves me wrong. I would just LOVE for that to happen. For real. But, I suspect that even if that were to happen, while yes, that crow would be eaten, doubts about Harbaugh would most likely remain for a while longer.

I think if Harbs doesn't get us back to the playoffs this upcoming season, "he's done."

  2. I hope the Ravens FO guys were watching the Houston DB's working yesterday against Oakland, albeit against a 3rd string QB. Regardless, they covered the Raider receivers. Fantastic backfield play. As the article says, the Ravens have suffered from poor play from our guys for years, even back to Reed's final days. This is a passing league and you have to stop Brady, Ben, Rodgers etc. Ozzie has seemingly ignored this for the last few years. The trade for Weddle was a decent attempt but he wore down after 8-10 games(couldn't make the big play against Pittsburgh). IMO, time to make Jimmy a backup. He doesn't stay on the field. Ditto with Weddle. Rest are worth keeping. While on my soap box. the LB's can't cover receivers either. How many times did we see number 57 and 50 chasing down a guy after a 20 yard gain?

I like Weddle and he tries really hard, but he's slipping too. Sometimes he doesn't seem strong enough to bring down some of these big, muscular receivers or RBs. We always get good playmakers on the end of their career so we don't get much benefit from having them. It's like they say, "you get what you pay for."

  3. Couldn't agree more with the article. We've been saying it for years now. Since Jimmy was selected, the team has SETTLED for value free agents and late round selections hoping on a wing and a prayer that they could find someone to step up and it's never happened. You reap what you sow. If you want to fix the issues and keep it CHEAP, you have to spend multiple high draft picks on the position all while fixing the damn pass rush.

...what pass rush, Rav'n Maniac???! We don't have one. Sizzle and Doom have fizzled out due to injuries and old age. They've both loss a step or two over these last coupla' years. I do admire both their play 3 or 4 yrs back, but right now it's abysmal.

I don't care what the offense did or did not do. A defense can not give up 21 points in the 4th quarter. And if it only take one player to have the defense fall apart, then it really was not a good defense.

It not a good defense but no matter what you can't have the defense play most of the other quarters. The offense 3 and outs is un acceptable.

The Ravens had nearly a 10 minute time of possession advantage over the Stillers, so that excuse doesn't wash for that game. Same for the Raiders game and the Giants game, also situations where the defense crumbled in the end.

I still for the life on me can not understand why Webb and Wright did not even try to tackle the receiver in bounds. Webb actually pushes him out of bounds on the first pass I watches that series three times and one thing stuck out NO LEADERSHIP. Ray & Ed would have been all over it. i.e Super Bowl. There is so much wrong with this team its impossible to nail it down to a couple of things.

I know, I saw that too. Where Webby pushed the Steeler receiver out of bounds instead of tackling him in-bounds. That's a rookie mental mistake that Webby shouldn't be making at this point in his career. The receiver was fighting for extra yardage...maybe a yard or 2, but let him have it cause the clock is more important at that stage of the game.

  5. ...why was Mike Wallace only targeted once or twice the whole game??!?! If SSS can get open so can MW. I know Wallace was furious after the loss. They never showed him on the field after the game or even during the game. And the last play of the game why would our strategy be to throw the ball in the middle of the field with 4 secs left for minimal yardage when we should've had 8 guys shoot down to the endzone and wait for a hail mary and hope one of our guys gets the tipped ball. That hook and ladder crap never works (if that's what they were gonna try)! Hadn't the ball been tipped our receiver would've been tacked on the spot anyway...there were at least 2 Squeelas closing in on him. Then the other irritating thing is, during they're last possession, our defenders (Webby) didn't seem to realize we need to keep those guys inbounds, no matter how hard they fight. On they're last drive we let about 3 of their receivers fight their way to the sidelines to stop the clock.

  6. if we make decisions like this next weekend we will loose.

...we always do this. We either have the game in hand and let the other team hang around long enough to mount a come-back or we're behind the whole game and fight our way back in the last minute or 2 only to finally lose by giving up a splash play in the 2ndary or allowing a rushing score. Just smh....

Here's my prediction for next week: we'll beat Pittsburgh in a tight one at Heinz field to take the lead in the division only to lose to Cincinnatti the next week and hand the division title right back over to the Squeelas and be stuck looking for a wild card spot.

  7. there were many things in this game that were irritating to watch for me. One glaring thing was the way our receivers keep stopping short of the sticks that would give us a first down. We were being forced to take what they gave us, which wasn't enough to sustain a drive. This happened so many times Monday I can't count'em. Same thing...1,2,3 and out. The defense was gassed, so of course, the Pats were well-rested and started pushing our guys around and no one could get to Brady...he just picked us apart in the pocket. We only got to him one or twice all night. While Flacco spent most of the night running for his life. And then the other thing I hate most of all, which was a staple in our defense for the longest over the past few years...we would fight hard from behind in a game in the last minute, and leave too much time on the clock while the other team gets the ball and advances the ball down the field in big chunks until finally going for the jugular with a TD pass to the endzone! End of game...

  8. ...soon as they announced Jimmy Smith was out, I already knew we would be vulnerable in the secondary. Powers and Tavon Young can't cover 6.6", 200+ lbs of Dez Bryant. Tavon is only 175lbs, 5'9. For Dez, it was like taking candy from a baby. I know our mentality is "next man up," but that mentality doesn't always work in our favor...no disrespect to Tavon, he did the best he could.

Trench Fight! We've gotta establish the run and stop it. I hope we take advantage of the Cowboys secondary via the deep pass. Carr and Brown got ate up by A. Brown. Steve Smith needs a breakout game this year because he hasn't had one so far. Win a game that all the pundits have us losing! Step it up Joe.

...as an armchair offensive/defensive coach, I noticed some chinks in the Cowboys' armor last night. #1 they have no pass rush and the 2ndary is vulnerable. Dak was successful mostly because he had all day in the pocket on most of his throws, so of course, he's eventually gonna find someone open. He won't have that luxury with T-Sizzle bearing down on him every play breathing fire & brimstone. I think Dak only got sacked once all night and was hardly hit or hurried. When we play him he will get hit plenty and hurried. We should be able to put the fear of God in him after Juvon, Jernigan, Brandon Wms, or T-Sizzle fall on him a few times. lol

I didn't mean to say the Cowboys don't have a pass rush, I meant to say he didn't get any pass rushes last night from the Squeelas, so Dak had all night to sit in the pocket and survey the field back & forth before releasing the ball. But I think he is naturally a "quick release" type QB.

  11. I've been REALLY hard on the Ravens this year, with good reason I might add. This game against Dallas in big D is an eat CROW game for me, IF they get a W or play really tough game I'll be happy to eat crow. Strength vs Strength. Love these kinda of match ups. Go get a W guys. Time is now.

I'll be eating crow too if we lose. I couldn't stand idly by while those Cowboy fans diss our team and our city!

  12. the Ravens stand a snowballs chance of winning this game, but they will still be tied with the Steelers after they beat the Browns.

...we're always the underdog in big games anyway. The way I see it we do stand a pretty good chance. The number # ranked run defense against the number #1 ranked top rusher in the NFL. The immovable object vs. the irresistible force! I see it as being a low-scoring game, since our defense has now officially gelled. We keep Zeke Elliot out of the end-zone and we stand a chance. And having said that, that will keep the game close throughout; and with Tucker putting up points with field goals (like last night with Seattle & the Patriots) that'll give our offense a chance to click and get on-track. We tend to come out fast and fizzle out toward the end but for once I'd like to see us come out slow and come on toward the end and just win baby!!

  13. Muwhahahahaha. CAN they do it in Dallas? I live real close by but the games are so much better at the crib. Beat Dallas and bring back the swagger.

...since we started playing Dallas in 2000, we've beaten them all 4 times we've played them. And coupled with the fact that we have the #2 defense in the league...and our offense is starting to gel, I think that gives up a pretty good chance for an upset!!

  14. Was a little worried when McCown came in. That guy has hurt us recently. But the defense stepped up, made him look bad, and it changed the game.

RavenSpain, I was a lil concerned too. I was wondering why they didn't start him since he gave us so much trouble the last time. I could foresee the momentum shifting toward the Browns when McCowan trouted out. But it didn't matter, our D, shut him down too as they did all the other posers they brought out. But it is true what one of the analysts said during half-time, you gotta put a team like this away early. Cause if you let'em hang around they gain confidence and step up their game and start to really believe they can beat you! Once we finally scored a TD and the score was 21 - 7, I figured they were done although I also figured they'd go down swingin'! lol I predict the Dallas game will be low-scoring and close, but that we will pull it out by a hair.

  15. ...we did much better, but I could see the game gradually getting away from us as we got near the end. If there were more time on the clock I suspect the Squeelas would've taken the lead. Why we started giving Antonio Brown more of a cushion late in the 4th qtr, Idk. That's how they started getting completions down the field. Had we played them the same way we did since the beginning of the game they wouldn't have gotten those 2 touchdowns.

  16. I no longer look forward to Sundays and no longer have any bragging rites at work. In fact, I totally avoid the football discussion like the plague. We only have a few decent, consistent players who really try to make difference...SSS, Aiken, Wallace, West, Dixon, Perriman (as of late). But Joe's throws are all over the place sometimes (under or over). He only scrambles or moves around in the pocket if he has no other choice, when actually he should do it in some cases to buy more time or move defenders out of position to free up his receivers down field. His confidence seems to be shot at times and I'm sure it's partially eroded because of the lack of protection from his O-line. Our defense still has the same problem(s) it's had for the last 4 games...which is giving up the big splash play late in the 4th qtr...every game. If they're gonna give up a BIG splash play each game I'd rather it not be in the 4th qtr. when the game is hanging in the balance.
And the penalties, though reduced this week, have haunted us week-in and week-out. Our offensive play-calling has no creativity...no flea-flicker, no end-around reverse. All we do to try to mix it up is throw the ball straight down the line of scrimmage which results in nothing or either negative yardage. It takes too long to develop, and by the time the ball gets there the defender is already on top of the receiver. And the screen pass is becoming predictable. We won't beat the Squeelas after the bye...they're wayyy better than we are at this point of the season.

  17. I've got a feeling that we're going to see more teams going uptempo against our defense. Once the Giants went uptempo our D-line got gassed and the pass rush was nonexistent. I think we're also going to see teams blitzing us more often, there were a lot of free rushers coming at Flacco on blitzes.

...yeah, the up-tempo was killing our D. Not to mention we had no pass-rush at all, except for the lone sack by Suggs. This may be his last year. He seems to have lost his edge. And again, just like a couple of years ago...with around 2min left we have the lead, then under 2 min they score a TD (always), then we score with a field goal. And then with under a minute with them deep in their own territory we let them get 1 or 2 first downs and then we give up the BIG splash play for long yardage that breaks our collective backs! It seems inevitable that all our last 3 games have gone this way.

  18. ...I hate to be a spoilsport but based on our past performance these last 2 games, I don't think we'll win (maybe if we didn't have so many offensive line injuries) on Sunday. I used to look forward to our games but we're too unpredictable from week to week. And the offense still can't get on track. No matter how good the defense is the offense is gonna need to score some points somehow.

we had a fast start and then fizzled out as the 1st qtr. progressed. We frittered away the whole game after the first qtr. and waited again til the last 7 min. of the game to really try to get something going. Too little, too late! Play-calling is definitely a problem. It seems we were taking what the gave us instead of taking what we want. We too many underneath passes that killed our drives...short of the sticks. Too many dropped passes again. Last week it was Aiken who dropped a back-breaking pass, this week it was Perriman. Flacco had another off day...over-throwing and under-throwing passes probably because he wasn't getting any protection from the O-line (heard footsteps). And Joe only scrambles or moves around in the pocket when things are dire and teams can game-plan on Flacco being a stationery QB for the most part. I said it before and I'll say it again, we seem to be playing like we did 3 yrs ago...where we give the game away in the last minute or so by allowing splash plays or letting an inferior opponent hang around til the end of the game, giving them hope. We have a lot of raw talent that needs to be more disciplined (mental penalties) and more focused. Our team failed to go deep when we had the ball, but Cousins wasn't hesitant at all. As the 2nd half progressed Cousins confidence grew and he started going deep whenever he wanted without fear of interception. Again this week, like last week, our receivers kept running short of the sticks which plays into the opponents hands. Why run short of the sticks when you know it won't result in a 1st down. I get it... you hope the receiver can get YAC, but that never seems to happen with us unless SSS is the receiver. The plan needs to be to get beyond the sticks then cut your route short and make the catch and give you offense a chance to establish a rhythm or get a 1st down. Then the other thing, like the commentator pointed out, is that our defenders seem to be playing too far off their man...giving them too much room to fake a deep route and then suddenly turn it up short for a first down. I know this was a long post, but there's a lot I see us doing wrong week in and week out...some are repeat mistakes.

This is not school yard football. You just don't run a route where you want to. Plays are designed to attack certain defense alignments in certain situations. On 3rd & Long, the primary Wrs run routes past the 1st down marker, which leaves underneath open. So, if Flacco only has 2.3 seconds to make a decision, Wallace & Perriman were never open, his O-line is crashing, he's going to throw the ball to the open receiver underneath if that's Juice, Gilmore, etc. Almost every pass play in the NFL has a deep route, an intermediate route, a short route and a checkdown. It's up to the primary WR to get open (Wallace & Perriman were not) then it's up to the QB to read the route (or go to the next progression) and then it's up to the O-line to give him the time and then the QB has to make the throw. Good O-lines typically give the QB 3-4 seconds to make that happen. Ours is not. ZERO offenses can be successful if you are only giving your QB 2.5 seconds - I don't care who is calling the plays.

funny you should say that, cause that's exactly how it seems! Just like we're playing school yard football these last 2 weeks! (lol) No one said run any route you want. what i'm saying is "run different, more effective routes that will net a gain, not come up short of the sticks." Besides, I'm sure there's a ton of broken routes/plays that are run that result in positive yardage. Sometimes you have to take risks and take more than they're giving you. These underneath pass for short yardage in front of the sticks is what was helping to kill us. Don't you see that?? We all know about the main receiver and the checkdowns, but if that's not working it's time to change our strategy. It's not rocket science.

  20. though CJ made a costly mistake, I don't blame him for the loss. we had plenty of other opportunities, early on, to gain control of the game. we just let all our chances slip through our fingers. And it's starting to become a pattern week in, week out and it's irritating. All that talent we have on the field and our receivers can't get separation. When I look at Antonio Brown...when Ben is scrambling he runs like crazy to get open and Ben always finds him down field for a BIG play.
