  1. I don't understand why no one seems to be mentioning James Jones when talking about FA WR's, could be a nice signing for a lot of teams

There are probably a bunch of reasons why. He's the best FA receiver out there. He's short but not a burner, he's a possession receiver but he has stone hands. So what do you offer a guy like that? Not much. Somebody will because he's the best receiver available (although I'd argue it's Nicks). Jones is not worth what somebody is going to offer him. There are less expensive options like Nicks and Tate who I think are better anyway. Tate could be a stud here, he reminds me of Boldin/Ward.

  2. If Holmes accepts the veteran minimum we should give him a shot. WHEN healthy, WHEN motivated, WHEN focused, he can be a difference maker. Well, he used to be. He looked like garbage in NY. Didn't produce, was always hurt, kept complaining. Huge headcase. Rather have Steve Smith over him.

  3. Evan at that price it's a high risk move, Delmas is really injury prone and will miss games. What is the market like for Clemons?

He'll probably get loads of offers. The only good cover safety out there is Byrd and he's looking for 10+ mil. per year, which he's definitely not getting unless somebody is REALLY desperate. I'd say Clemons gets around 5 mil. per year on a long term deal. And compared to Byrd that's a steal, you're getting a solid cover safety who still has 3-4 good years left in the tank.

  4. That's a lot, actually. Delmas just played his first healthy season and it's not like he's outstanding as a free safety. I would have much rather bought Clemons back

3 million on a one year "prove it" deal for a solid/proven starting safety is nothing which is why the Phins picked him up instead of spending a lot more cash in a long term deal on Clemons. They already have one of the highest paid safeties in the league. Good move by Miami.

  5. At best he'd be another training camp body right now. He needs to get in shape first and even when he's in shape he needs to prove he can play. He wasn't able to do that in Oakland, and now being out of shape I find it hard he's suddenly gonna be a difference maker. Like I said, I think if everything works out for him he can be a rotational guy. Maybe next year or so after a year under his belt he can take over as a starter but those are all big if's and maybe's.

  6. I think we need three RBs, not just two especially since Pierce is usually hurting. Ben probably can't be an every down back but would be a good addition to the mix.

Tate is looking for a starting job and a decent payday. He's definitely not worth that. Not worth a starting job and definitely not worth a fat contract either. If he came in here to split carries and take a backup type contract I'd be all for it, but the way it looks right now adding him wouldn't make any sense considering we're already spending a lot of money on Rice.

  7. Really? I just thought that he's a veteran presence who knows how to make line calls and adjustments. I also thought he kept one of the best offensive lines in San Francisco together with his knowledge on the field. He'd be equivalent to Birk in my mind. Maybe not the best physical presence, but his knowledge would be invaluable

But Birk was still playing at a high level, he was very smart and good in pass protection, he knew what the defense was going to throw at us. Goodwin is just old. He's not a terrible run blocker but he struggles a lot with pass protection. I don't mind bringing him in for depth because I think he can play Guard as well, but I really don't want a guy like that starting at C for us this season. We need somebody to really hold that spot down and do a decent job in protection and also push the pile in the running game.

BTW: I accidentally voted your post down when I tried to quote you.

  8. Ben Tate from the Houston Texans is a 25 yo bruising RB. He grew up on Maryland's Eastern Shore and still has upside.

Bruising? Tate? He's a one dimensional speed back who can't stay healthy and needs an elite O-Line to produce. Pass. We're set at RB.
